Questions / Music Videos & Musicbee - optimal organisation
« on: July 12, 2020, 09:19:44 AM »
I don't have many music videos as yet, but would like these to be accessible through Musicbee.

Should I have each music video stored in the album it came from (artist/album/), and if so, should it just sit with the audio tracks, or in a Video subfolder etc.

Also, if there were multiple albums that this music video belonged to, is there a way to manage this, so I only have one copy of the music video (so as not to waste space). For example, Original album, Greatest hits, some other various artist releases could all have the matching audio track, so it would be nice to be able to know a matching video exists when viewing the album.

I will see if it error persists. It was the latest portable version.

Questions / Code To Distinguish Between Album Owners
« on: August 08, 2019, 10:25:22 PM »
I would like to embed a 3 character code (eg JMJ, ERJ, TGJ) to identify if an album is mine or belongs to one of my kids.

The objective being, I can filter the playlist to only show my albums, or one of the kids may wish to only filter out my album collection.

I am assuming this filtering is possible.

Suggestions on the best place to embed this 3 character code?

Also, as an afterthought, if 2 or more family members happened to own the same album, perhaps the embedded field would have to contain 2 or more sets of 3 character codes?

Keeping in mind that my music files are all stored in the one folder, with tracks stored in the format artist-album-track#-TrackName.flac
The kind off additional artwork I would want to be 'linking in' would be album booklet graphics etc (artwork specific to the album). Therefore I would not want to embed this into every track file.
Is there are way I can do this in MB?

I am thinking CD Booklet maybe in the form of  artist-album-CDBooklet01  artist-album-CDBooklet02_03 artist-album-CdBooklet 04_05 etc.

How would I go about linking this just once?

If you check the lower half of the Artwork tag you can add..

•  Album Cover
•  Cover Back
•  Leaflet Page
•  Media Label
•  Lead Artist
•  Conductor
•  Recording Location

...and a host of others, hitting the ADD button gives you the option of selecting your preferred image.

You need to check it out and experiment with some of the multitude of options available in MB

Freddy

So in my case, I have an album with 10 tracks. The album cover is embedded in each of those 10 tracks.

Therefore if for example I wanted to add Leaflet Page, would I have to embed that into each of the 10 tracks, or is there a way to link this once without embedding (using some Musicbee database facility?

Also with leaflet page (and I will have a closer look), does this support say the 10 or so pages you may find in a CD booklet?

A few of the titles have pages from the CD booklet, scans of the CD itself. I am wondering what to do with all these extra items.

Facilities to enable other images associated with tracks can be included here..

Am I going to hit any limitations keeping it like this?

Well, eventually, you will hit the limit of how many files you can have in a Windows file system folder...

I did look into this, and with NTFS file system, I will never hit the limit (Maximum number of files in a single folder: 4,294,967,295). FAT32 yes (Max files in single folder: 65,534).

Am I going to hit any limitations keeping it like this?

If you ever need to look in the windows folder, you will be scrolling for a long time...

I can see no benefit to a flat file organisation over a simple, two level, disc-based folder hierarchy of AlbumArtist\Album\track.wav with one folder per album.

That structure allows you to have a folder.jpg image for each album, and store riplogs for each album, and easily find, move, copy or re-rip any album.

If you wanted to adopt a folder hierarchy, MB can do it for you automatically, using the auto-organise function, using a suitable naming template, assuming your files have correct metadata tags. If they're not tagged properly. MB can be instructed to infer tags from your carefully-formed filenames.

Oh, and yes; convert your files to FLAC. Smaller, better tagging, but still bit-perfect reproduction.

You make a good argument for the folders option.

Questions / A question of lyrics
« on: August 08, 2019, 09:19:05 AM »
This question may be more opinion rather than technical based.

I am in the process of moving my music to Musicbee, and trying to workout all the things to do, so I get it right the first time.

Are most people including lyrics with their music files?

From what I can gather, embedding lyrics in the music files itself is not a clear recommendation? (I saw a post where Steven asks are you sure you want to embed lyrics).

The minilyrics plugin seems to be quite 'cool', but is this something that loses its novelty appeal when you realize Karaoke is as fun as it was first thought?

For those with big collections that started some time ago, what would you do differently if starting again from scratch?

'Next Scan' meaning File > Scan folders for new files.

Can this be set to occur automatically or at each startup of MB?

27
I know that these are not the same file.

I am learning MB by experimenting.

If I was using Windows File Explorer instead of Musicbee, and it didn't update automatically, then F5 would do the job.

I am looking for the equivalent action in Musicbee.

When I start building my library for real, I am sure that there will be some renaming (or converting) required at some stage.

I would like to know how to handle this before I take the plunge.

As for why I would use an external converter to get this to flac, I have been using DBPoweramp for many years, and dont know if there would be any benefit from using the built in Musicbee converter (apart from the fact that MB would know about the change and the updating would be automatic).

28
I have a .wav album that I placed in a playlist. (This is just a test, so it is also the only album in the playlist)

Externally I converted this to flac. (So now all the tracks are in flac, with the wav files being no longer).

I then restarted Musicbee.

Musicbee is still looking for the wav tracks, and is not showing the flac tracks.

I tried F5 refresh without change.

How do I fix this?

I went tools > advanced > rescan all files. This only seems to have introduced a red exclamation mark to the wav file tracks, but has not brought in the flac tracks.

What should I have done instead?

Am I going to hit any limitations keeping it like this?

I no longer use WAV files as tagging them can prove problematic, also the file sizes are a massive overkill. I think you will find that most MB users make FLAC their choice for lossless. I could be wrong, I was once in 1972  ;D
Regards: Freddy

Looks like converting to .flac is the way to go. When I started, flac was not an option.

I have built my music collection over the years, and have used the format:

artist-albumname-track#-trackname.wav

and kept everything in the one folder.

I haven't used an interface like Musicbee previously, but found one folder being convenient when accessing in Windows.

I have decided to put embed album cover art into each track (so no folder.jpg or cover.jpg).
