Psychoadept, thanks for the info. I got it to work late last night by going through Preferences/Devices/Settings and making sure the options in the "media storage" section that MB requires matched "exactly" with Windows (like the file name can only be "Music" not "Music Master", no matter where the drive is located). But I'm going to drop MusicBee because it is not playing nice with Windows 8.1 "Windows Explorer."

After installing the latest 3.0 and then the latest 3.1 upgrade to that, Windows Explorer started to have problems -- it wouldn't read the directories in the tree panel on the left side and display contents in the right side panel or, as it attempted to display them in the right panel, the green progress bar (showing the reading/scanning of the directory) either never got to the end or once it got to the end it never went away as if Windows was still trying to scan the directory for files.  So I uninstalled MusicBee 3.1 and the problem went away -- immediately, without rebooting or changing anything else.

Psychoadept, I know from the Forum here that you are pretty knowledgeable in MusicBee, so if you think this interference with Windows Explorer is a bug the developer would need to know about, feel free to report it as such in the "Bugs section" or wherever.  I'm done. Spent too much time already.
Thanks for the replies.

Psychoadept -- that's great to hear that you have done that because that is what I'm attempting to do.  So what's the trick to doing that?  The original question was "how" do you do it?  Specifically in the OP:

"what are the steps to populate MusicBee 3.1 library from an SDXC card that IS recognized in MusicBee Navigator Panel under Devices? (I'm under Windows 8.1 and SDXC card is set up as removable media and works fine with VLC player.)"  SD card is formatted as NTFS.

If you can share that info that would be great!  Because I'm still dead in the water on getting MB to populate the library from SD card.

Thanks for whatever info you can give.

Preferences/Devices, the removable drives on my PC show up, but under Preferences/Library/Monitored folders and selecting "Choose Folders" they do NOT show up, so there is no way to scan the devices into the MB Library!  See details above.
They are showing up, but MB shows them as Devices.
If you look at your Windows Device Manager it will show your SD card as removable, so I'm assuming Steven uses that info from the Windows API to decide what gets defined as drives and devices.

You would probably need to list your SD card via a mount point so it will be seen as permanant storage.
See this article: Using an SD card as permanent storage
I'm already aware of mounting cards as permanent storage; even from the same link you post.  But, if MB only works with permanent storage, then it would be easier to return to MediaMonkey or iTunes, or ... Don't want to do that really; I like the UI of MB.

So far I'm getting what seem like "best guesses" from the Forum.  I think the best approach would be to answer the question asked:  Can anyone replicate and see the same problem I am seeing in the "choose folder" box in library preferences?  See OP.

I do appreciate the help immensely! Is frustrating just not getting MB through the first step, let alone doing any customization.

Report that to the existing thread and continue the discussion with Steven to see if he wants to enhance it.
The "existing thread" is over 120 days without activity and says start a new one.  Also, that thread is not exactly on point to this thread; that one involved other changes/complications by the user that could impact MB.  The above question above involves no complications, it is MB from first install.

Never mind the install question -- I went ahead and, yes 3.1 installs as a simple update to 3.0.
RESULT: same problem.

So, I return to my original issue: can someone replicate and verify that they have the same issue I posted originally?  That is, in Preferences/Devices, the removable drives on my PC show up, but under Preferences/Library/Monitored folders and selecting "Choose Folders" they do NOT show up, so there is no way to scan the devices into the MB Library!  See details above.

OK, I'll give 3.1 a try; even thought under "release notes" the latest version for Win 8.1 is 3.0.6335.
Can I trouble you with a related newbie MB question?  I downloaded 3.1 and it is only 3MB in size, but 3.0 is almost 13MB.  Must 3.0 be installed already and 3.1 is installed over it?  (I tried installing 3.1 after uninstalling 3.0 and got an install error.)

I searched "how to install "musicbee 3.1" but no results.

thanks a ton.

Bug Reports / Re: organizing removable drives
« on: May 13, 2017, 03:26:18 AM »
Related to this issue, it was suggested by another Forum member that I post my issue on this similar question.  Although, my issue is simpler than the OP's:

 My urgent question is:

** what are the steps to populate MusicBee 3.0.6335 (dated May 6, 2017) library from an SDXC card that IS recognized in MusicBee Navigator Panel under Devices? (I'm under Windows 8.1. SDXC card is set up as removable media and works fine with VLC player.)**

I think the need for these instructions is much greater due to more use of removable storage media.
Let me add a clearer way to see the problem:

I uninstalled and reinstalled MB.  When asking if I want to scan my folders for MB library set up, it only shows a couple of folders on my C: drive. So I unchecked them. The same window however, also presents a box "choose folders".

Click "choose folders" and it shows:
_ Libraries
_ Windows C:
_ WLAN backup hard drive

(Interesting that it shows the WiFi hard drive, but neither of the removable drives on my PC -- the SDXC card or the USB drive.)  My music files are all on the SDXC card.

And then, this is probably the most helpful way to see the problem:

>I go into Edit/Preferences

>Under Preferences/Devices the SDXC card clearly shows as a device.  (Note the "Folders" box at bottom of that window is empty.)

>Under Preferences/Library/Monitored folders there is another "choose folders" box.  Click it to choose the SDXC device and the Music folder in it (with all my music files), but again, it only shows the same 3 folders as when I clicked it above.  The SDXC does NOT show up as an option to choose music source files from -- even though it shows in Devices.

That's where I dead end.  Can anyone else replicate this problem to see the issue?

Questions / Re: Latest Version vs 3.1
« on: May 13, 2017, 03:05:56 AM »
That's really confusing to me. So as a newbie trying to convert over from MediaMonkey (because MusicBee sounds more intuitive UI), which should I download? I'm tempted to say 3.0 would be more stable, since 3.1 is a new release -- analogous to sticking with Windows 8.1 instead of upgrading to Windows 10 and waiting until they work the bugs out of Windows 10.

Or is MB 3.1 so much superior or more stable than 3.0?

Thx.

I've spent two full days researching and trying different solutions on this.

Let me add a clearer way to see the problem:

I uninstalled and reinstalled MB.  When asking if I want to scan my folders for MB library set up, it only shows a couple of folders on my C: drive. So I unchecked them. The same window however, also presents a box "choose folders".

That's where I dead end.  Can anyone else replicate this problem to see the issue?

Also, at https://getmusicbee.com/downloads/ it shows the May 6, 2017 version of MB is "MusicBee 3.0.6335;  Released on May 6, 2017; For Vista/ Win7/ Win8/ Win10"
Doesn't show a 3.1 version.  So 3.1 must be in Beta?

Just curious, did you ever get this sorted out? Or did you give up on MusicBee?  I'm trying to convert to MusicBee because of its great reviews and it sounded much simpler than MediaMonkey I've used before. But, I've been working with it for 3 days now and Library is still not functioning right.

And I get the ""following files no longer exist at their expected location - remove them from the library?" error that you also were getting.

Online I read all the great reviews about MusicBee, so I dropped MusicMonkey for MusicBee 3.0. However, just establishing the MB library from my 64GB SDXC card (NTFS formatted) on my Windows 8.1 SurfacePro has been impossible.

The formal documentation on how to do such is non-existent. I've googled, read documents, watched Youtube videos, etc.  And searching multiple terms on MB support forums leads me to one of two conclusions: either the forums don't address it or I'm looking in the wrong areas.  So, my urgent question is:

** what are the steps to populate MusicBee 3.0 library from an SDXC card that IS recognized in MusicBee Navigator Panel under Devices? (I'm under Windows 8.1. SDXC card is set up as removable media and works fine with VLC player.)**

I think the need for these instructions is much greater due to more use of removable storage media.

So far, this is the type of info I've found in the forums:
"August 21, 2016, 01:02:36 PM
"To be honest, I can't speak from experience in using MusicBee's library with removable storage.
"So perhaps another member with experience with this can give you some good tips and advice on that.
"Also I am pretty sure you should be able to find some existing forum posts on this matter."

Actually, I'm not so sure anything exists in the Forums on this.
Can some of you experienced users help me out?  I'd really like to use MusicBee.
