Tips and Tricks / Why wont my MP3 files play
« on: April 01, 2011, 05:31:36 PM »
Due to licensing restrictions MusicBee (and most other freeware players that havent purchased the required MP3 licenses) can only use the MP3 codec that comes already installed with windows.
However the Windows 'N' series does not include this codec. You can download it yourself from miscrosoft:

MusicBee Wishlist / Now Playing panel config enhancements
« on: March 31, 2011, 09:33:27 PM »
i've enhanced the layout choices for the now playing panel
- you can now dock the track info with the player controls in a compressed format - see for the original proposal. Just right click on the panel/ Configure Layout/ Track Information/ Show in this Panel (compressed with player controls)
- the right click menu structure for the layout configuration has been improved
- you can now dock player controls in now playing panel with its in the left sidebar (you might have been able to get that to work before - its now properly supported)
- the tab colouring on the now playing window has been improved
- the docking state of the components within the now playing panel are separately maintained for when the now playing panel is displayed as a floating window vs. when its docked in the right sidebar eg. you could dock the player controls and compressed track info to the top of the floating now playing window but when docked to the right sidebar the player controls are not displayed within the panel

i've tested this a lot but because there are so many combinations of layout choices its possible i overlooked something, so keep a copy of your musicbee.exe just in case you want to revert to the older version

MusicBee Wishlist / Customise Notification Popup
« on: March 29, 2011, 08:25:28 PM »
this was asked for a very long time ago - you can now configure the fields and fonts displayed in the now playing notification

the settings are accessed from the Layout preferences tab/ Now Playing
I know someone will ask for this, but for now you cant change a rating or love status from this popup

MusicBee API / Help Wanted!
« on: March 13, 2011, 08:35:38 PM »
any developers who might be interested to help out with MusicBee, I am particularily wanting help for the following:
- a windows .NET friendly interface to the Project M visualisers (I have not checked myself yet, but I gather VLC may have created a windows port so that might be a good starting point)
- implementation of lyrics plugin api for some of the specialist lyrics sites or for additional artwork providers (not as important)
- implementation of a UPnP server plugin (I have some useful info and code samples to get this started)
- implementation of a coverflow plugin (I would need to make some enhancements to the plugin API, so please contact me first)

please PM me if you are interested to help out

Plugins / Winamp Visualisers
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:26:53 PM »
for the Milkdrop visualiser see this topic

for other Winamp visualisers do the following:
- get the latest beta from the weekly downloads topic (you need 1.2.4051 or above)
- if not already installed, install the winamp visualiser
- from the Plugins folder where winamp is installed, copy the following to the Plugins folder where MusicBee is installed:
  - the visualiser dll which will be named vis_xxxx.dll eg. vis_MojoMaster.dll
  - the settings folder for the visualiser which will be specific to the visualiser eg. the MojoMasterMedia folder for vis_MojoMaster.dll

then restart musicbee and you should see the visualiser from the selection list in View/ Show Visualisers

*** note that some winamp visualisers will not work with MusicBee in full screen mode and can cause Blue Screen failures ***

Skins / New skin elements
« on: January 24, 2011, 07:41:12 PM »
I've set up this topic so anyone creating skins can be aware of new elements.

I've created:
when editing text in the location bar
<element id="Panel.LocationBarEdit.Default" bg="129,87,129" fg="255,5,255" />
bdr is ignored

to change the checkbox border in the context and dropdown menus:
<element id="Menu.DropDownCheckBoxBorder.Default" bdr="129,87,129" />
<element id="Menu.DropDownCheckBoxBorder.Highlight" bdr="129,87,129" />
i didnt add this to Menu.DropDownCheckBox.Default for backwards compatibility reason with older skins

MusicBee API / MusicBee API
« on: September 27, 2010, 08:57:49 PM »
I've created the first version of an API that enables plugin developers to access information held in MusicBee and to control MusicBee.
Initially the API is focussed on enabling your plugin to be notified of player events, retrieve tag data, and to control the player. Over time I will add APIs to stream music data, control GUI aspects so you can create new views or possibly entirely skin MusicBee.

I would appreciate anyone building a plugin to let me know so I know whats coming down the line so I dont end up duplicating anything, or so I can prioritise adding new API calls.

Get the latest MusicBee beta from the downloads topic

All dlls need to be named MB_*.dll and placed in the Plugins folder where MB is installed.
If using C# or VB.NET, you need to target .NET 4.0 client profile and for all interfaces note that MusicBee runs in 32-bit mode on 64-bit machines

API interface and examples for v2.5:
C# source
VB.NET source
C++ source - this is no longer being updated with new API methods - contact me if you would need to use the C++ API

API interface and examples for v3.0:
C# source
VB.NET source

API interface and examples for v3.1+:
C# source
VB.NET source
C++ source - this API is very old and missing many new API methods - contact me if you would need to use the C++ API

The API interface is backwards compatible, so you are not required to update your plugin every time the API is updated

Bug Reports / Before You Post - Read This
« on: September 18, 2010, 02:40:21 PM »
MusicBee is regularily updated with fixes and new features on this forum before being made available on the official downloads page.

Often bugs have already been fixed, so before posting a bug report, it is worth trying with the latest version first:

Also when posting a bug report post as many details as possible, including the error message text.

Errors can be very specific to your particular preference settings and you may be asked to send your settings file which is located:
- Help/ Support/ View Settings File
- you will need to remove your username and password from the file
- upload the file somewhere eg.
- and then send me a PM with the link to the file

Any bugs related to the new website should be reported:

Plugins / Mini-Lyrics Support
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:50:09 PM »
***** This plugin is redundant now - Crinsoft (the makers of minilyrics) have a plugin that integrates with musicbee ******
- just install the latest minilyrics program from

you need to have the mini-lyrics application already installed

and requires MusicBee 1.2.3908+

copy this zip file to where MusicBee is installed and unzip:

you should have:
c:\program files\musicbee\MLPlugin.ini
c:\program files\musicbee\Plugins\gen_MiniLyrics.dll

then edit MLPlugin.ini and change it to point to where mini-lyrics is installed. You just need to start MB and it will detect the 2 files and automatically invoke/interact with mini-lyrics.
You can hide/show mini-lyrics by right clicking the Now Playing panel in the right sidebar and toggling 'Show Mini-Lyrics'

Visualizers / Milkdrop Visualiser Support
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:21:18 PM »
Download this link for the visualiser zip file:

unzip and copy the files to the MusicBee Plugins folder
you should end up with
c:\program files\musicbee\plugins\vis_milk2.dll
c:\program files\musicbee\plugins\Milkdrop2\...
c:\program files\musicbee\plugins\Microsoft.VC90.CRT\...

when you start MusicBee you should see MilkDrop 2.2 in the list of visualisers
in my own testing, i did have rare cases where the MilkDrop visualiser failed with a "out of memory" error for no apparent reason. You need to restart MusicBee and all should be OK again

Some users may need to update their DirectX 9.0 runtimes:
