Questions / New Laptop - Import settings?
« on: September 12, 2020, 05:49:01 PM »
Just got a new laptop, downloaded the newest version of MusicBee, installed no problem. All my music is on an external drive so setting the library up was easy as well.

I've also managed to  get it back to my custom sorting etc.

However, I customised quite a lot in my MusicBee, is there a way of exporting settings from MB on my old laptop and then importing them on my new one to save having to redo everything manually (which I can do but it's just time consuming)?

Bug Reports / Settings tab in tag edits
« on: September 16, 2019, 02:09:23 PM »
Right click on track, edit, then the settings tab is the bit I'm talking about.

I use a couple of things on here, firstly the equaliser preset and secondly the "exclude from playback".

I have my music on a large external drive, which also has all my movies, documents etc on it. When I travel I take a smaller 2TB drive that just has all my music files backed up on it and use the relink music files to just change the drive name. When I get home, I relink again to the default drive.

However, I've noticed that in doing this all the data in the settings tab has gone, meaning that the "auto-select by genre" function in the euqliser no longer works except for files tagged with one of the specific genre's in there.

Is this a bug or is it by design? Do you know of a workaround, I have nearly 40,000 music files so I don't want to have to keep putting it back manually.

General Discussions / Artist pictures

With the new update, google is activated by default. After getting a picture of an actual whistle, while rap band "Whistle" were playing, and loops of wire when indie band "Wire" were playing, I turned it off.

However, it seemed to be finding less bands than it used to before the update so I turned it back on again.

"A House" unsuprisingly gave me a picture of a house, and "Black Box" a black box.

Things got a bit surreal when I was playing a late 80s Blast First compilation and one of Steve Albini's side projects, "Rapeman" came on and it gave me a picture of two Japanese schoolgirls...

The above aside, it would be nice if it looked elsewhere first and used Google as a last resort...

Questions / Disabling Google from image search.
« on: May 19, 2019, 09:29:33 AM »
Google has been added to the search for artist pictures, and as Stephen says in the apdate thread it does throw up some unrelated images (like showing pictures of actual whistles, then playing "Nothing Serious" by Whistle).

I disabled it in Now Playing, but this doesn't seem to disable it from theater views. Is there currently any way to do this?

MusicBee Wishlist / Left main panel - thumbnail browser
« on: March 26, 2017, 08:18:43 AM »
On 3.0 I had two custom fields set, Source (on custom 4) and trackyear (on custom 3).

Now I've upgraded to 3.1, Source has stayed the same, but trackyear has disappeared and its tags automatically moved to the new "original year" tag. It seems to have done it properly, the values seem to be correct, but there's a minor irritation.

Original year isn't an option in the drop down menu on the left main panel, meaning I can no longer use it to easily see tracks from a particular year.

It's not a major issue, more a trivial annoyance, but it would be good if it could appear there in a later update.

Questions / Problem installing new version.
« on: March 25, 2017, 08:58:49 PM »
I downloaded and unzipped the current 3.1 file and tried to run the installer.

Immediately it starts I get this error:

Error opening file for writing

c:\Program Files (x86)\MuaicBee\MusicBee.exe

(and the the options abort retry ignore).

I've tried both running the file normally and using "run as administrator" and get the same error both times.

I'm on Windows 10, and my current MusicBee version is 3.0.6132

Tips and Tricks / Solving stuttering on start in Windows 10
« on: January 30, 2017, 11:31:55 AM »
I was having trouble with MusicBee regularly stuttering when I "unpaused" tracks. I'd also noticed that the external drive I keep my music on was constantly rumbling away even when I wasn't playing music.

Found out how to uninstall Microsoft's Groove Music and the problem is resolved.

Apparently it constantly checks music files trying to index them.

Questions / Tags being stripped when I add artwork
« on: January 10, 2017, 08:20:13 PM »
I did post on this a few days ago, but that's now defunct because the issue isn't what I thought it was and does seem to be with MusicBee.

I'm currently adding extra artwork to loads of albums. Today I must have done about 30 albums.

Of those 30, 6 had this problem.

One track in each of these 6 lost all it's tags from MB normal view, including the tracklength tag. They play normally, and MB sees the length normally in the play bar at the bottom.

I moved them to the inbox to try and find out what's going on. What I'm describing here is the same for all of the tracks affected.

Right clicking and going into the edit, the fields are all blank. However, clicking on the tag inspector, says the tags are there.

OK, next step, open the file in mp3tag, that shows the tags as there as well. Now for the odd bit. If I click to save the tags in mp3tag, without editing anything, then go back to the still pen MB window, the correct tagging for that file now shows properly. The other affected files do the same only when I resave their tags in mp3tag as well.

OK, so all's not lost, I've found a workaround to recover the tags, but this is a bit odd.

Anyone have a clue what's going on here? Is there a setting I could have accidentally chnged in MB to cause this?

WIndows 10. Current public download of MB (Version 3.0.6132). It has affected both flac and mp3 files.

Questions / Tags disappearing after editing images
« on: January 08, 2017, 08:28:21 PM »
Bear with me for a minute. I think I've figured out what's causing this and want to know if it's possible.

I'm fairly anal with regards to tagging, I suspect a few on here are, MB is very good at handling tags so if you do care about them it one of many good reasons to use MB. I check and double check quite a lot.

Recently I've started adding more art to the tags, back of sleeve, media, leaflet pics etc etc etc.

A few days agi I noticed that 4 tracks were missing some tags (I had 4 albums showing as [empty] in the left side panel on a particular tag I was checking). When I checked them they were missing nearly ALL their tags, even some system assigned ones (track length being the most noticable). None of them were important and I had a feeling I'd deleted them anyway, so I deleted them again.

Today, after I added some artwork to a ripped CD single, two of the tracks suddenly lost all their information on the screen. Right clicking and then using edit to look at the tags, it was the same as before. The file was on the disc, but all the tags were missing. Again they are tracks I may have deleted (different mixes of the same song, sometimes I keep them, sometimes I don't, and I had a spree of getting rid of some recently).

I don't think it's a MB problem, I hope not, I think I've solved it but I don't know enough about how windows does things to be sure it's feasible. If it isn't, then it might be a MB issue.

All my music is on an external drive. I've just bought a new laptop, done a fresh install of MB on it (using the released version) and realoded the music onto a new library changing nothing on the disc.

If I deleted files using the old laptop but didn't get roung to emptying the recycle bin could this cause an issue like this. I know enough to know there will be a hidden recyler folder on the external drive, obviously if I didn't empty on my old machine the bin on the drive won't match that on the new laptop. Would it put the files back? Could this strip them of tags in the process? The files were still playable.

My old machine was Windows 7, the new one is Windows 10.

This is stretching beyond my IT skills but could I have reached the right conclusion or do I need to look for something else?

Questions / Adding track to library from monitored folders.
« on: December 26, 2016, 04:44:47 PM »
Sometimes it takes MusicBee AGES to find a new track. Is there any way to speed this up?

Some background.

I'm currently digitising a huge amount of vinyl using Audacity, it's a slow enough process as it is, so having to wait for MusicBee to find tracks is frustrating.

First I get everything done that Audacity is good at, the recording, cleaning etc. I then split the track and "Export Multiple" from Audacity (as FLACs) into a folder that I've set MusicBee to monitor. I only tag the track title in Audacity so when it arrives in MusicBee it shows as unknown artist and album but with the track titles correct. That makes it easy to do the rest of the tagging inside MusicBee, which is better at tagging than Audacity.

I have two folders set to monitor, the one where I store my music and one other which is where I put new stuff which is normally empty. Once I've tagged and analysed volume in MusicBee I use the automatic "send files to organised folder" to put it in the main folder and then "send to music library". I have MusicBee set to put new files in Inbox.

9 times out of 10 this is all fine. I export the files from Audacity, go to MusicBee (which is open in a dfferent window) and the files are there for me to work on. However, sometimes, one or more file is missing, never all of then, just one or two, and it then takes AGES to find them. Sometimes, I have to close and reopen MB to find them, and it still takes a good minute after I've reopened it.

Is there any way to manually add a file to the Inbox than MB is taking ages to find?

Questions / Unwanted settings checked on new files
« on: September 04, 2016, 04:44:29 PM »
I've finally got round to getting my turntable set up and linked to the laptop.

I recorded two test tracks using Audacity, the results were good. I deliberately recorded one that I'd also recorded from CD using MusicBee and then played them one after the other back to back to compare sound quality.

I noticed that the version recorded from Audacity kept continuing from the point last played rather than the beginning, I've found and corrected the problem. In the "setting" section after right clicking and selecting "edit", the "remember playback position setting" was checked, also "exclude from playback" was also checked. I've now unchecked them both and now the life behaves as I want it to.

However, why did this happen and is there any way I can prevent it? AFAIK those are MusicBee settings so Audacity couldn't have done it. I have thousands of records to rip so it will be a bit of a pain if I have to manually uncheck those settings for each track, recording from vinyl is time consuming enough!

Bug Reports / Dodgy CDs
« on: July 06, 2016, 03:28:49 PM »
A bit of background information: I emigrated 7 years ago and I've just had my records and CDs (several thousand of them) shipped from the UK to Cyprus. I'm currently ripping a lot of CDs. Some of them, after 7 years in storage are not in as good condition as I'd hoped. Some (not many fortunately) have tracks that skip, usually the last one or two tracks.

MusicBee's behaviour when this happens is irritating, I don't know if it's something fixable, or if it's going to happen no matter what, but I thought I'd report it and try and find out.

It just gets stuck on the dodgy track, it keeps trying to copy but there's no progress. The obvious solution is to hit cancel, which is what I do.

Then it says to wait 10 seconds while it closes background processes, no problem, except that it invariably fails to end the background processes and suggests a restart. That normally fixes it, and I can get the tracks it ripped before the dodgy one but a couple of times it has failed to re-open and I've had to end the process in Windows Task Manager to get it to start again.
Annoying rather than fatal, MusicBee seems to work normally again afterwards and I haven't noticed any data loss.

Questions / Storing music on an external drive.
« on: June 12, 2016, 03:42:09 PM »
I've started to rip a huge number of CDs, I also hve a load of vinyl to digitise. I've realised (after bothering to think about it!) that I'm not going to have close to enough space on my laptop drive, so I'm going to have to put everything on an external drive, possibly more than one.

My question, my external drive regularly gets unplugged from the laptop, with WMP if I unplugged an external drive it forgot everything that was on it and reloaded the entire library from scratch when I plugged it back in, very time consuming.

How does musicbee behave with external drives? I'm hoping that as it stores a library file on the main drive it will remember what's n the library and be ready to play immediately I plug the drive back in.

Questions / Artist images
« on: May 12, 2016, 07:53:14 PM »
Dunno if I've missed something obvious here...

I using 3.0, normally in theater mode in the "artists pictures" option.

I've been pleasantly surprised by some of the obscure artists it HAS found, but some of my collection is too obscure/local for it to find anything and I really don't like the placeholder image of the single flower in the vase....

Is there any way to manually add images of artists it can't find? If not is there an easy way to change the placeholder image?

Questions / New to Music Bee
« on: May 08, 2016, 01:01:26 PM »
Hi, I'm new to Music Bee, I found it looking for an alternative to the terrible Windows Media Player that I've just been using as the path of least resistance, however, it's constant munging of file tags and refusal to allow things the way I want them (mainly by redownloading wrong information and replacing my edits with it even though I've unchecked every box to do with downloading info the Internet).

So far I've played around with MusicBee using my old lobrary and I like what I see. I'm currently manually repairing all the tags on my music using mp3tag (a long job, there's about 8000 files), once that's done I'm getting rid of WMP altogether and using the corrected files with Music Bee. I have a few questions, apologies if some of these seem obvious to people who haven't recently used the piece of crap that is WMP. I'm 99% certain MusicBee is for me, but I just want to check a few points, I am a bit anal about my music!

1) If I edit fields in Music Bee, odes it edit the tag on the original file? (I hope it does).
2) Cover artwork. WMP doesn't bother to embed it in the file (OK, sometimes it does, seemingly at random) but instead creates irritating hidden jpg files all over the place. Am I correct in assuming that Music Bee uses the one embedded in the file?
3) For historical reasons (that I;m in the process of correcting) my music is a mixture of mpg, wma and wav files. the latest Mp3Tag can tag all of these, does MusicBee recognise tags in all of these (I know some players struggle with tags in wav files)?
4) I have a lot of compilations, WMP only recognises a date for a whole album, how will MusicBee cope if individual tracks on a compilation have different values entered on the Year tag?
5) I notice that version 3.0 is out. The version I've downloaded is 2.5. Would I be better off upgrading to 3.0 before I set up the libraries etc?

Just for feedback purposes one of the things that strongly attracts me to MusicBee is the Inbox feature. I emigrated a few years back and my record collection is currently in transit as I've finally decided to ship it. I will be digitising an extensive amount of music (from vinyl, cassette, VHS and CD) and I get the feeling being able to inbox things as I go will be incredibly useful.

I also like the look of these forums and look forward to becoming an active member of the community.
