thank you Zak and Roby. Zak, i think your variation on the original option 2 in the way to go. I will implement it. I had not thought about installing the portable versions on the laptop2, but i can see the rationale and the convenience.

Roby, could you please clarify what you mean by "activate Safely Remove from the control panel, i.e. disable the cache". is this different from simply ejecting the device? i am googling it right now but i can't find it

thank you for the link. i think it could address the issue. The problem in my case is that i occasionally DJ, and i use one of these laptops for it which i am afraid may complicates things significantly.

Your comment about external hard drives is fair and it is likely it is the ultimate cause of my problem, but i don't know what i am doing wrong. i am religiously ejecting the drive or shutting down the laptop before physically disconnecting it. what else could i be doing wrong?

Questions / most 'robust' MB configuration?
« on: May 06, 2023, 06:09:36 AM »
Hello everyone, I would like to have some advice from expert users on robust MB configurations. I have been using MB portable for many years now. I keep all my music on an external HD, which also contains MB portable, and I move across Windows laptops. At times files get corrupted in the HD and I lose MB config/library/playlist settings. For the purpose of this post, let’s ignore what the cause of the file corruption may be (whether it depends on MB or other factors). I would like to explore what MB configuration may provide the best compromise between portability (all files stored on the same device) vs robustness (reducing the likelihood of losing config/library/playlist settings). I am considering these options
1)   MB portable + music file on an HD (what I use now)
2)   MB (not portable) installed on each laptop + MB config/library/playlist settings and music on external HD
3)   MB (not portable) and MB config/library/playlist settings installed on each laptop + music on external HD. (This would mean that I would have to move config/library/playlist settings between laptops manually, I suppose)
Additional info: I have ~1 terabyte of music which I group into 7-8 libraries
Any advice?

you are right. there were a number corrupted MB setting files. and this appears to have solved the problem (so far..). The issue is that this is a new HD, and something similar happened to the 2 previous ones i had. bad luck? or am i doing something wrong?

thanks for your reply

the problem is getting worse, since now even the auto-playlists act strange. Some are corrupted and some have the setting changed (for example the genre changes).

one auto-playlist gives the error message pasted below.

two questions:
1) the error message starts by saying "MusicBee v3.5.8442.17201P  (Win10.0)". I am swapping the portable version between windows 11 and windows 10. Could this be a problem?
2) above Steven said "....try deleting MusicBeeLibrary.pfidx  in the root musicbee music folder". my MusicBeeLibrary.pfidx is in MusicBee\Library\Tango\Playlists. And there are others in other folders like T:\MusicBee\Library\Rock\Playlists etc. Could this be an issue?

error log ------------

thank you Karbock and Steven for replying.

i tried deleting try deleting MusicBeeLibrary.pfidx but nothing happened, as you feared. on the other hand, nothing happened today to my playlists, so maybe that is the reason.

i have recovered the error logs which i paste below.

Questions / playlits disappearing
« on: April 29, 2023, 01:26:55 PM »
hello, i use MB 3.5.8442 P

recently some playlists have disappeared while others have been modified without my intervention (the songs in the playlist is different from what i included in the playlist). in one instance, this happened after MB crashed. Other times, i am not sure what may have caused it. would you have any suggestion?

also, i save the playlist in the library folder, inside the folder of a specific library ( as T:\MusicBee\Library\Rock\). is this a reasonable thing to do?

thanks

i was just going to add information about this. This problem occurs with MB 3.5.8249 P. However, it works fine with  MB 3.0.5995. I have just tested it.

One more experiment on this.
1) i create a playlist in MB with songs (say)
 'song1, song0, song2, song0, song3, song0'.
2) i export this (Export Playlist) as .m3u.
3) I rename the save playlist and
4) I import it in MB. It shows
'song1, song0, song2, song3'.

File->Playlist->Import Playlists
i try with a few and it does the same. what playlist format do you use?

Questions / playing a song more than once in a playlist
« on: February 08, 2023, 10:09:50 AM »
hello everyone, i have a playlist (.m3u) in which a specific song (song0, say) is played more than once at specific locations in the play list. For example: 'song1, song0, song2, song3, song0, song4'. When i import it into MusicBee, only one instance of song0 shows, as 'song1, song0, song2, song3, song4' (i.e., the '2nd' song0 is missing).

does anyone know how to address this problem?

thanks
