Questions / Using Metadata
« on: October 13, 2016, 06:32:04 PM »
Hi all,
I got the idea to try a PowerShell script to automatically copy select music files to other folders based on Rating. Wasn't having any luck with a Rating filter but then noticed in explorer the metadata isn't there.  Rating, Title, genre, etc isn't seen when looking at a file's Properties through explorer.

In Preferences >> Tags(1), I have "store ratings in the music file" checked. Is the metadata just in the MusicBee db?  Can it get copied into the file so external tools can use it? And if Rating should get stored in music file, why doesn't explorer see it?  What am I missing?

Thanks in advance and keep up the grrrrrreat work!

@AvikB I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished site in action - I hope it isn't too far away.

Just a suggestion:
The two most common inquiries since the release of v3 RC seem to be (1) how to move main player between top and bottom pane and (2) search results setting (always show the entire album). I guess many people out there might wonder the same things even if they never visit the forum after release of the official v3.
I already suggested quick settings under panel layout button for v3.1, but just for moving main player adding a context menu command to the player would suffice for people who didn't figure out dragging it on the panel layout panel. For search results setting, consider showing the setting on all views even if it's disabled and add to the tooltip that it's only enabled on Album & Tracks view.

and tooltips (sometimes overlooked or underutilized as a effective resource) really are an easy and convenient source of pertinent info for all. documentation is necessary but first line of defense is tooltips for a better user experience, new or otherwise.

At some dropdown menu's, the disabled entries don't get a border displayed when hovered-over, which is a nice and subtle touch:
thats controlled by the .NET library, so to get the same behavior i would probably need to write my own controls which i doubt i would be prepared to do
don't blame you. time can be better spent unless the need is great

IMHO, alternate suggestions...at top of home page...say it's "FUN"

"MusicBee makes it easy and FUN to manage,....."

OR

"MusicBee is easy. It's FUN to manage, find and play your music on your computer."        (maybe remove "on your computer")

And...

"Also enjoy listening to podcasts, web radio stations and even Soundcloud with MusicBee."

And...

"Get MusicBee NOW - It's FREE!  You'll never go back."       ("NOW" calls for action; "you'll never go back" is great, very powerful)

Awesome job!!  Looks fantastic, very impressive.

"Beautiful Skins" section........

"Swap skins to customize MusicBee's appearance. Get more from our Add-ons section."

still a bug...Prefs | Now Playing | playing tracks list | if playback is stopped...is set to Play Now.  So when nothing is playing and I double-click on a track it should begin playing immediately but instead the action is the same as Queue Next.  If the Now Playing list is empty and I double-click on a track, the track is queued but nothing begins to play.
could you send me your settings file (help/ support/ view settings) as its working fine for me
sent PM

the appeal for new users...setup is fast and easy

for all users...customization is off-the-charts......skins, layouts, 3 player modes, tag editing, plugins, CD ripping, artwork and that doesn't even scratch the surface

When you double-click on a song to play in track details view, and then double-click another song, the speaker icon stays located at the former playing track(s):
(Rostropovich is actually playing here)
as i am sure you would appreciate, if that was something that ordinarily happened it would have long ago been reported and fixed. So for now i am putting this down to "something about your machine" but if others report the same or you are able to provide a specific set of steps then i will investigate further

No problem.

Of course I can't have any reliable notion about other users noticing this or making the effort to report it.
v3.0.5946

I thought I'd try this. The speaker icon seems to switch as expected when I double-click on a track and then click to switch to the next track.  I have Prefs | Now Playing | Playing Tracks List | when tracks are playing = Queue Next and so the current playing track continues to play when I double-click another track.

I did notice something. If I change settings to Prefs | Now Playing | Playing Tracks List | if playback is stopped = Play Now, and I double-click a track while nothing is playing, nothing starts to play.  Seems like "Play Now" isn't taking effect when nothing is playing and I double-click a track.

I don't think this helps hiccup but....

Scenario B - AutoDJ & Shuffle are off. I delete everything in Now Playing (manually-Del key) except for current track. Use context menu Queue Next to add to Now Playing list. Start AutoDJ and same as Scenario A.
if you have shuffle enabled then "queue next" tracks are placed in a special queue/ and numbered. With yesterday's version will include those at the start of the auto-dj list. Anything else on the now playing list is cleared. If shuffle was not enabled, the entire now playing list except the current playing track is cleared. There isnt any way to know which items were included in the now playing list via queue next. Keep in mind that if MB didnt automatically clear the now playing list, i am sure people would complain as it could easily be holding all tracks in the library

i think all the other scenarios are variations on what i just described. I dont think i will change the behavior as-of yesterday for v3.0 but happy to reconsider for v3.1 after discussion
that seems to match my experience. not clearing the queued tracks (with Shuffle) is very good. otherwise not a big deal unless others find reason for more. thanks as always.

it wont include v2.5. Whether you support v2.5 skins is up to you but for myself I am not spending time looking at v2.5

but I'd like to suggest, for a future update after 3.0, if any USER queued tracks (via Queue Next) exist when turning on Auto DJ, those queued tracks should remain in the list of tracks to play and Auto DJ tracks should be added AFTER them, OR....
that should already be the case now and just retested to confirm. Can you give me step-by-step what actions you are doing?
Scenario A - Just start Auto DJ and the Now Playing list is cleared (except for current track) and populated by AutoDJ selections. Turn off AutoDJ, then start it and process repeats.

Scenario B - AutoDJ & Shuffle are off. I delete everything in Now Playing (manually-Del key) except for current track. Use context menu Queue Next to add to Now Playing list. Start AutoDJ and same as Scenario A.

Scenario C - same as Scenario B except Shuffle is ON. When AutoDJ is started the queued tracks remain in place and AutoDJ adds to the list to achieve the list size.

(Shuffle has 3 icons. There's the one that looks like "Equal" sign (No Shuffle), then "Equal" with "backslash" kinda (Shuffle) and then the 3rd one. What is the 3rd shuffle icon?)

Scenario D - AutoDJ is OFF and Shuffle is ON. The list generated by AutoDJ is there but I don't manually queue any tracks.  I manually delete most but not all in the list. Start AutoDJ and the list is cleared except for the current track and populated from AutoDJ.

I hope that helps.

This is all about Now Playing. I've selected 3-4 tracks and placed them in Now Playing by using the "Queue Next" context menu item. The "current" song is playing and while playing I turn on "Auto DJ".

The entire contents of Now Playing is cleared and it is populated with "Auto DJ" tracks (which I can understand). The queued songs are gone. And the "current song" that is still playing is no longer in the list. However the song at the top of the list is identified (with the graphic) as the current playing track. Are the queued tracks intended to be cleared? Shouldn't the current playing track remain in the list when turning on Auto DJ?
those are fixed for the next update
yes fixed thanks Steven...

but I'd like to suggest, for a future update after 3.0, if any USER queued tracks (via Queue Next) exist when turning on Auto DJ, those queued tracks should remain in the list of tracks to play and Auto DJ tracks should be added AFTER them, OR....
at least give the user the opportunity to pick a clear option....maybe...1) whether to clear all except currently playing, 2) clear non-queued tracks only, 3) clear nothing (Auto DJ adds to the very bottom of current list of Now Playing tracks)

btw, queued songs no longer get a queue number. Don't recall that changing so just mentioning it.

That only happens if you have shuffle enabled, and if you have Auto DJ on, Shuffle is automatically turned off.
thanks had a feeling it would be something like that
