MusicBee Wishlist / Re: Multiple value splitter for "Album Artist" tag
« on: April 14, 2024, 11:46:21 PM »
This already works for the AlbumArtist field using a semicolon as the separator. While there are different schools of thought on whether or not this should or should not be used, the current setup already functions as expected.

Beyond MusicBee / Re: Android music players similar to Musicbee?
« on: March 28, 2024, 05:46:30 PM »
Most music players for Android use a very basic  approach based mostly on the standard APIs. So while they may look different, the underlying structure and library is fundamentally the same and limited to the "standard" tags that the base Android player uses.

There are some that offer better audio engines, and independent library management. But I am not aware of any that will add custom tags like "Display Artist" to their internal database.

Neutron has a great engine but basic library management.
Poweramp has a decent engine and does allow for multiple Artists and Genres. But again no custom tags.
GoneMAD has some extended tag support including the sort versions for Artist, Album, Albumartist, and Composer. Playback engine is limited to 48kHz standard though.

There are others, but none that I have tried over the last decade plus that offer what you seek for the Display Artist tag support.

So you installed a brand new player.  Scanned what you believe was your whole library. Believe the software found a bunch of duplicate tracks. And the first thing that comes to mind is to delete the suspected duplicates?

Perhaps the first step should have been to check if there really were duplicates in the file manager. And the more important thing  to ask - do you have a full backup of your music library you can restore from?

General Discussions / Re: Optimal codecs / settings for quality
« on: March 11, 2024, 10:08:11 PM »
it's not a question of being "fair". It's just a statement of fact. LAME is deadware and Opus is actively developed...
LAME is not deadware, there are millions of users that benefit from it every day.

Using Opus will result in quantitively better results - higher quality music at lower file sizes.
Subjective, but use it if you prefer. That is your choice. Be sure your player of choice supports Opus though, there are many that don't. MP3 on the other hand is pretty much universally supported, even with iTunes. Besides, with huge amounts of storage available at affordable pricing, why aren't you considering a lossless format like FLAC? Then you don't have to worry about any compression issues at all.

Even if that hurts LAME's feelings.
I'm sure LAME will be fine without you.

Beyond MusicBee / Re: One-way sync from SD card to an iPhone.
« on: February 26, 2024, 01:01:20 AM »
I don't know what iOS version that device will update to. I would recommend a non-Apple player like BTR AMP or Neutron Music Player that you can download from the App Store if they are compatible. These can play music independently for the typical Apple closed system. Then you can just transfer music through the Files or MS Remote Desktop apps to this iDevice and play them natively with one of these players. BTR AMP has a much more user friendly UI, Neutron is focused on the audiophile side of things with a ridiculous number of tweaks you can apply.

Questions / Re: Possible to do multiple sort categories per artist?
« on: February 23, 2024, 01:18:32 AM »
Back in iTunes I could use multiple sort as categories per artist to split those albums into consecutive categories of the canon albums, then tribute albums, then all the live bootleg albums at the end.  MusicBee does not seem to support this however, telling me if I try to put a sort as tag on one Zappa album that's different from the tag on another, that "this value is not consistent with the custom sort value used by MusicBee for sorting the artist".
What field in iTunes were you using for this? There are no options in iTunes that allow any field to be multi value. But if you have different fields like composer, grouping, comments, etc. then you can use a similar combination in MusicBee to create a custom sort.

Questions / Re: Compilation Albums split into artists and tracks
« on: February 12, 2024, 09:05:37 PM »
Mostly Album Artist is the first Artist on the album.
This is not a recommended method, as the remaining tracks on the Album will not match. As already suggested, a typical compilation album will have an Albumartist like "Various Artists" except perhaps in some cases where it may be a tribute Album where you may use the Tributee as the Albumartist.

Is this different to checking the compilation box when ripping?
Yes

My use of Artist rather than Album Artist is that my major collection (147 albums) is that the two do not always match.
They rarely do on a compilation Album.

There are two differnt tags, one for Album gain and one for Track gain. I would check your Replaygain software and run it again by album. Whatever the target gain is set to, it should set the same level for all Album gain levels. For most decently dynamic Albums, the Track gain will differ from track, even on the same Album. Try one or two Albums you are familiar with first to confirm it is working as expected.

Hi

I would like to buy online 2 albums , artist "the smile"
there are 2 versions for both album

1) 16bit 44.100 , like the cd

2) 24bit and 44.100  , i don't know if there is a better dither or better quality

should I enable some settings in musicbee 3.5.8698 ?
well , does musicbee play flac 24bit at 44.100 in wasapi exclusive mode?
thanks
There are several factors to consider. Hardware plays a big role. Are you using mid- to higher-end headphones or a decent home HiFi system? is your audio being processed and played through a built-in sound card or something more robust? And is the source material going to make a difference? Everyone has an opinion, only you can decide if higher resolution files are worth the additional cost.

Are you clicking on the top header of the column, not just anywhere in the list?

I completely resonate with your experience, and it's a bit frustrating when managing tags in MusicBee. I've also faced similar challenges with discrepancies between the MusicBee database and the actual file tags.
This was resolved over a year ago. See replies #2 and #3 for ways that best apply in your situation. Both will have MB uodate the current library details with any new tags that may have been updated in any files.

Questions / Re: Virtual TAG: View metadata padding size, possible?
« on: January 18, 2024, 09:01:12 PM »
So, wait.  We're saying that if I "obtain" some FLAC files that have a cover, and then I remove that cover in mp3tag, the size used by the cover doesn't come out of the size of the file?  It just kind of stays as padding until I do a FLAC to FLAC conversion?

Oh, my. This seems to verify that.

If this is pans out as true, and it looks like it does, I could really use this kind of virtual tag too.

How did I not know this?
This has been addressed in mp3tag just today. A new utility function was added to remove padding in FLAC files.

Thanks.  I have tried that a without any luck.  Are there any plugins or settings that I need to be aware of?  Most of the files don't have any metadata at all, just a file name which makes no sense, just a.mp3, b.mp3,.....

There is no way to identify these tracks without something in the filename or metadata to work with. Filenames with no meaning will get nothing.

Questions / Re: Albums and playlists together?
« on: January 11, 2024, 07:06:14 PM »
i haven't asked anything romoths (years?) and i still received the same answers, so i don't think it changes something
all the things i ask i already tried to do by myself. if i ask there must be a reason...that i suppose is the same of  many others: i didn't find a solution. I don't think there are many people that asks just because they don't know what to do, and they just have the solution.
You started this thread just 4 days ago, and have asked several questions through the course of this current conversation. Many other users have shared their methods for dealing with their library that are similar to what you are trying to do. Some are even spending time to come up with help even when it isn't a problem for them. But it does seem you have more reasons why you won't do something than for the ones you will.

I see you registered here almost 8 years ago. I'd think by now you would have figured it out, or found a new program that does. And if there isn't an app that does what you want, perhaps the problem isn't with the software.

Try Boom Player, from the same dev as Foobar. The lightest and most basic player for PC that I know of.
