Bug Reports / Re: Highlighting Rules with 3.6.8694+
« on: November 26, 2023, 07:36:51 AM »
this should fix the issue

Thx Steven, just confirmed 3.5 version do fix the problem I encountered. Will try 3.6 later today, if I didn't show up reporting again, things should be fine 👍

But the patch that Steven posted is for version 3.6...

Actually I did try 3.6 after writing the post and it's the same, so didn't bother editing the post  ;)

I do have the same problem too (some highlight rule suddenly apply to (almost) all tracks), since updating to 3.5.8698.

The highlight rule concerned is checking if "Sort Composer" exists. I was rigorous on making my library free of any "Sort Composer" tag, and use the internal sorting within MusicBee instead (I mean the "enable custom sorting" option). With 3.5.8447 there was no problem (no highlight shown); but with 3.5.8698 all tracks that contain Composer tag has the "Sort Composer" rule highlight applied. Just tried 3.5.8727 (newest patch as of today) and the problem persists.

Bug Reports / Re: .NET error using 3.5.8384 RC2
« on: January 01, 2023, 06:23:21 PM »
This is the same issue I have been encountering for these few days too, usually happens after playing a few tracks (sometimes it even happened when idle). The stack trace is almost identical. Either of the following migitated the problem for me:

1. Switch back to WASAPI shared mode for RC2
2. Use the newest patch today

It's lucky I didn't risk destroying the system with dotnet tool thingy.

MusicBee Wishlist / Re: Music Bee Sync
« on: December 25, 2022, 01:54:33 PM »
Beware that anything having "sync to cloud" features needs server backend. That can cost hansomly, depending on amounts of user and content. Besides, the server backend needs people to manage too.

Unless Musicbee becomes ad supported or having premium tier that pays monthly fee, I can't see it happening, unless Stefan has that much time and money to burn.

+1. Not necessarily need to copy Foobar Columns UI, but its concept can be used for reference.

Columns can be weighted so that they are responsive to UI container width:

Or they can have a zero weight which means fixed width:

But indeed there are corner cases which need to be ironed out, such as when sum of width of fixed columns alone already exceeds windows width, etc.

+1 too, though for me it's Custom Tags being almost used up

MusicBee Wishlist / Re: Allow to remove line gap between discs

I have added an option to not separate discs

It seems to be working fine, even for custom views. Thx Stefen!

Might need to move this to the wishlist.

Done, feature request link here.

And I have tried various sorting, no, it simply won't budge.

MusicBee Wishlist / Allow to remove line gap between discs
« on: November 01, 2022, 08:19:48 AM »
This feature request has already been asked as question topic. Currently track sub-grouping has a toggleable setting about where to add a line gap, like this:

However, if tracks within the same group span across different discs (usually happens with large scale classical music works), then a mandatory gap would appear between discs, without any way to turn it off. 2 Screenshots after next paragraph demonstrates the problem, first without sub-grouping, and 2nd image with sub-grouping.

The only workaround so far is to remove disc tags from all tracks and invent spurious track numbers so all tracks "appear" to have the same disc. Would it be possible to add a toggle in the same manner as sub-grouping gap setting?

MusicBee Wishlist / Re: please add albumartists tag

But I don't feel this thread is for explaining a request multiple times, and I think my startpost, and my second explanation contain all the information needed to appreciate the proposal.

It's entirely fine for me, since it's Stefan's decision alone to pick up proposals. I might never understand the necessity to create another single value tag though, no matter how many pages, documents or guides are there to be read, sorry for that.

MusicBee Wishlist / Re: Multiple level sub-grouping
« on: May 22, 2021, 04:19:21 PM »
Another use of multiple sub-grouping is for publisher who decide to break up a very long movement (say 20min+) into multiple tracks, there are quite some examples of such splitting. Here is one:

Despite using complex functions and custom tags, the result still is not comparable as if more sub-grouping were present.

I am talking about albums such as:

Janine Jansen - Bach Concertos
Eno ยท Hyde - High Life

Those are certainly not Various Artists albums.

I see, indeed I have misunderstood what you meant before. These are of course not VA albums.

Yeah, the main purpose of 'album artist' is to help in keeping the tracks of an album together.
That's why it should not be used as a multi-value tag.

Personally I used something very similar to Corliss (use the existing Album Artist tag in Musicbee), and additionally solely rely on format that supports multi-value tag (FLAC, M4A...). Once the setup is done, I simply forgot the problem has ever existed. Totally ignoring any sort of external "recommendations" here, and only concentrate on personal needs (specially, using column browser to filter out main album artists), sorry.

Hope I'm not misunderstanding again, I reckon what you need is something like "Display Album Artist" which behaves like current "Display Artist" does vs (multi-valued) artists?

One question: I think iTunes always present such albums as VA (corresponding to the 'iTunes compilation' checkbox in track setting), and then each tracks would have its own artists. Do you mean adding a tag for aggregation of all such artists? In that case I feel there would be potential problem for displaying such tag, as it can contain a hoard of people (twenty-something is not uncommon).

MusicBee Wishlist / Multiple level sub-grouping
« on: May 21, 2021, 03:34:07 PM »
In some cases, a single sub-grouping level is not enough. This occurs prominently with large scale classical music. Mahler's Symphony no. 8 is used as example (see bottom part of post).

From my experience of real world examples, 3 levels of sub-grouping should be safe. Operas consistently use 3 levels of sub-grouping, e.g. {Opera name} โ†’ Act 2 โ†’ Scene 3 โ†’ multiple tracks.

There are some notable caveats:

1. Foobar2000 already supports multiple sub-grouping level, but its implementation is no good. It always forcefully display all sub-groups as blank vertical space even when they are not defined in tags. The presentation would be much better if they were optional (hidden without taking up any space).

2. Is it true that Musicbee assumes sub-grouping is contained within a disc? I mean, really large scale works might span across 2 CDs or even more. I tried to make sub-grouping work with multiple discs, but it always inserts a line gap between discs, and I can't tell if it's really working fine as intended.
