there is only one place the error can be and thats the reporting message that MB displays. Is it possible the filename contains "{n}" where n is a digit?

nope. the filenames do not contain "{n}" or any other problematic characters. the filenames go like this:

01 - Artist - Track Title

no leading / tailing spaces, no foreign characters, no other numbers except the track number

2
are you using a language version of MB and if so, which language?

if not, can you update to the latest version from the first forum topic

hi mate,

I'm using the standard English version downloaded directly from here:

https://getmusicbee.com/downloads/

EDIT:

the same error is occurring in version 3.1.6585

I left out some important information in the OP:

this error occurs when trying to re-locate files in directory #1, but not directory #2. for example:

Z:\LABELS\P\Pinkman\YYYY - Artist1 - Album1
Z:\LABELS\P\Pinkman\YYYY - Artist2 - Album2

I change the filenames in both directories, then re-scan the files in MusicBee

error for all files contained in directory #1
no error for all the files contained in for directory #2

I tested this with identical filenames and identical tags (artist, album, track title and track number; all other tags deleted using the extended tag viewer in mp3tag)

the directory character length is also identical (well under 255)

directories #1 and #2 live on the same hard disk

the music files are identical, except for the filenames and tags. I checked them in AudioTester and they passed with no error

testing more...
- set the filenames in directory #2 (the "bad" directory) to the original expected filenames
- rescan, no problem
- change the filenames in directory #2 to something unexpected
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - error
- change the filenames back to the original expected filenames
- rescan, no problem. play the file in MB, no problem

testing...
- change the filename in directory #2 to something unexpected
- start a full MB re-scan for new files
- confirm the removal of the old files from the library
- play the file, no problem
- change the filename again
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - ERROR

testing...
- move the files to a different folder altogether (directory #3)
- start a full MB re-scan for new files
- confirm the removal of the old files from the library
- play the file, no problem
- change the filename again inside the new directory (directory #3)
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - ERROR

testing...
- create a new directory (directory #4)
- copy/paste (not move!) the files from directory #3 to directory #4
- change the filename again inside directory #4
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - NO ERROR. all good!

final test...
- copy/paste the files from directory #4 to directory #2 (or #3)
- delete the files from directory #4
- start a full MB re-scan for new files
- confirm the removal of the old files from the library
- play the file, no problem
- change the filename again inside directory #2 (or #3)
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - ERROR!

I can't figure this one out at all

Rename a music file in windows explorer
Find the track in MusicBee music tab / search tab / playlist tab (doesn't matter which)
Ctrl + S = "The following files no longer exist at their location... remove them from library?"
Select NO
Double click the missing file to trigger a locate missing file window
Error occurs

VERSION:

OS: Windows 7 home premium
MusicBee: 3.1.6512

I do a LOT of file re-location and never seen this error before... at least until I installed this version of MB a few days ago

Questions / Re: Custom tag for key notation
« on: September 03, 2017, 10:30:43 PM »
I just upgraded from 2.something to the latest 3.0.6335

forgot all about this annoying bug and the work-around. so I spent the evening mulling over the same problem I complained about a year ago. can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet! glad I made a thread about it at least ;D

5
I just upgraded from a very old version of MusicBee.

Let's imagine I have 5 tabs open. I will list them from left to right:

Computer folder
Playlist manager
Playlist folder
Playlist
Music

On the latest version of MusicBee, only the Computer folder will make the left sidebar jump.

On the old version of MusicBee, when I clicked ANY of these tabs, it would make the left sidebar jump.

It seems that a special exception has been made for computer folders... this is no good for me. I want sidebar to jump when I press any kind of tab, not just a computer folder.

I searched the preferences, but couldn't find any options related to this... please help

Questions / WASAPI / BSOD issues
« on: July 30, 2016, 12:55:51 PM »
I've experienced some blue screen crashes while using my NS7II USB mixer as a WASAPI audio device in MusicBee. I only use my mixer to hear 2 programs: Serato DJ and MusicBee. Windows sound and everything else uses my on-board sound-card by default.

I'm not sure if Serato DJ uses directsound, ASIO or WASAPI. however, if both Serato DJ and MusicBee are running, and MusicBee is using my mixer as a WASAPI device, this often leads to blue screen crashes. the crashes don't occur immediately. they usually happen when I close down the programs or switch between audio devices in MusicBee's preferences.

since this started happening, I tried using my mixer as an ASIO device in MusicBee. so far, no crashes have occurred.

can anyone explain why this was happening?

thanks for the helpful replies. I put in a request on the wish list.

I'm seeing some funny things happen in the tag inspector...

1) inside MusicBee preferences, I set my custom tag to "save to music file as tag" key.
2) I tag an mp3 file using MixedInKey
3) I import the file to MusicBee and inspect the tags:
        Name                    Tag Code                    Value
        INITIAL KEY           TKEY                            2A

4) the "key" field inside the Tags (2) remains blank.
5) I manually edit the "key" field inside Tags (2). I enter "9A" and save the changes.
6) I view the tag inspector again:
        Name                    Tag Code                    Value
        INITIAL KEY           TKEY                            2A
        KEY                        TXXX/TKEY                  9A

7) now I open the mp3 in foobar / serato. both programs read the key as 2A.
8 ) I clear the "key" field inside Tags (2). It is now blank again.
9) inside MusicBee preferences, I set my custom tag to "save to music file as tag" initial key.
10) re-scan library.
11) the "key" field inside the Tags (2) now displays 2A.

so, when a custom tag is set to "save to music file as tag" key, it fails to read/write the actual id3 tag "INITIAL KEY". however, when a custom tag is set to "save to music file as tag" initial key, it reads/writes the actual id3 tag "INITIAL KEY" just fine.  I'm wondering what the difference is between the tag codes "TXXX/TKEY" and "TKEY"... and overall I am just very puzzled :/

do you think if I change the custom tag display name to "Initial key", or the custom tag identifier to "Initial key", this might fix the problem?

9
in the configuration.xml, 'Initial Key' is looking for "INITIAL KEY" in FLAC files. FLAC files use "INITIALKEY" without a space. the work-around at the moment is to create a new custom tag for FLAC keys, or edit the config file.

OK, after removing the custom tag and re-scanning my library, the keys for mp3 files are now displaying. however, the keys for FLAC files are not displaying anymore. this is the reason I created a custom tag in the first place.

the Initial key tag in MusicBee does not display the key values of FLAC files which I tagged with MixedInKey. my own custom tag, called "Key", is able to display those values, but fails to display the values for mp3 files.  my tag definition for FLAC files is INITIALKEY and this works fine. however, the tag definitions TKEY and INITIAL KEY do not work for mp3. so my problem remains the same: how can I set up a custom tag which can display the key values for both mp3 and FLAC? what tag definition does MusicBee use for mp3 initial key?

OK, I'll try that. here is the view from my tag inspector and custom tags list. I will change 'Key' to 'Initial Key' from the drop down menu and re-scan my library.

Questions / Custom tag for key notation
« on: May 12, 2016, 07:14:58 AM »
I use Mixed In Key for tagging keys to FLAC & mp3 files.

If I select an mp3 file from windows explorer, go to properties, then ID-Tag, I can see that the key definition is "Initial key". in the FLAC file properties, the key definition is "INITIALKEY" (no space).

I created a custom tag in MusicBee. I want this tag to represent the key value of both mp3 and FLAC files. but for some reason, only the FLAC files display the key value in my custom column. I tried changing the id3 to "TKEY", but that didn't work. the definition "%Initial key%" works just fine in foobar.

hi scampbll,

thanks for the welcome and the great suggestions :)

I didn't realize you could move files inside MusicBee! that was much more straight-forward than I imagined. cheers buddy!

Questions / playlists and file paths
« on: September 06, 2014, 06:31:10 PM »
hi MusicBee forums,

I have a very large music collection spanning multiple external hard-drives. I want to keep my files organized by genre. I might store all my soul/funk and disco on one drive, all my jazz and heavy metal on another drive. but eventually, the jazz/metal drive becomes full

so I move all my jazz to a new drive and keep the old drive dedicated to heavy metal. OK, now there is plenty of empty space on each drive for new jazz and metal albums. problem is, how do I preserve my playlists that included jazz tracks? all the files paths will change. MusicBee won't recognize them anymore.

is this unavoidable? or can I make MusicBee rescan a new drive specifically for those missing jazz tracks in my playlists?

I read that MusicBee can preserve music library files when the drive letter changes, so long as the directory structure of the drive remains the same. is there a way to preserve playlists using this feature?

by the way, all my playlists stored as mbp files. how do mbp files differ (if at all) from m3u files when it comes to playlists/file paths?

really appreciate any suggestions. thanks!
