Thank you. I'll review that info. Hopefully, it will answer most, if not all, of my queries.

Thanks, psychoadept. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure how to accomplish any of the suggestions that you've made. For example, I see four presets, but none of the four keep the guest artist in the artist field. Also, where can I find more information about the Display Artist field or how MusicBee deals with multiple and guest artists? As to my reason for wanting to keep the featured artist in the artist field... Um... I guess it's a function, again, of my OCD and so that I'm consistent across my applications. I've only recently started trying MusicBee and I use a number of different applications as I'm always shifting between what seems to work best at the given moment.

This plugin and feature look very promising. Unfortunately, my featured artists are in the Artist field (e.g., a-ha (feat. Ian McCulloch)). And I k now that many people prefer to put featured artists in the track title field but that just ... doesn't work for the OCD part of my brain. Further, I want to copy the featured artist information to the Guest Artist field but I don't want to strip it from the artist field. So, is there a way to do this using this plugin?

Questions / Re: Choose which tags to import
« on: July 04, 2020, 02:38:29 AM »
Thanks. That was what I was thinking. But I'll give you an example that caused me enormous confusion. I have a few CDs by Go West. But I couldn't find them. Eventually, I found that they were sorted as West, Go. I checked the tags on my CDs and found that the tags were correct. But when I checked that table, I found that the entry for Go West was, indeed, West, Go. I can't find a track that had "West, Go" as the sort entry for artist, album artist, or composer. So I'm ... befuddled.

(And don't judge me for having CDs by Go West; blame a long-ago girlfriend...)

I've been doing a bit more investigating and I'm curious... I have a main database for the CDs that I've ripped in my collection. I have a secondary database for songs that came from ... elsewhere (Amazon, eMusic, SoundCloud, etc.). When I have my main CD database open and look in Preferences | Sorting/Grouping | Artists, I see a huge number of artists that I don't have CDs by. Was that info populated when music was imported into my "elsewhere" collection? If so, is there a way to keep the artist list separate for each database?

Thanks. I'm using dBpoweramp and I'm letting it use MusicBrainz & FreeDB to get metadata, but I'm only really checking the Artist, Album, & Title metadata. But I wanted to keep the Composer metadata so that at some later point I could go back and start working on that information. Thus, I'm not keen on deleting all of those tags. I was really hoping that I'd be able to tell MB to just ignore that field (or perhaps map that field to some other MB field from which information about artists is not taken).

I guess my real problem is that my sort orders are somewhat jumbled. I've curated the Artist, Album Artist, Sort Artist, and Sort Album Artist fields carefully, but then one of those artists may also be listed as a composer and, if I didn't fix that sort, then I wind up with somewhat unpredictable results.

Questions / Choose which tags to import
« on: July 02, 2020, 04:09:14 PM »
I'm finally re-ripping and tagging my collection. Yeah, yeah. I know.  Anyway, for the time being I'm focusing on Artist, Album, Song, etc. and not worrying about certain other tags. Which leads to my question. A lot of my music includes Composer tags, but so far those tags are, at best, inconsistent or missing, and in other cases, a total mess. But when I import the tracks into MB, it appears that info in the Composer tag fields is getting sucked into MB. Is there a way to tell MB to ignore certain tag fields on import?

Questions / Re: Multiple Artist Splitter

Can I split the artists within the MusicBee database but tell the program not to make any changes to the tags in my music files?

I'm not sure that I follow completely. The track on which I experimented with had an artist tag like this:

Artist (feat. Someone)

I split this into Artist (as an Artist) and Someone (as a Guest Artist). But when I looked at the tag in another application, it showed the artist tag like this:

Artist

No mention of Someone in the tag anymore. So where did it go?

Also, is there a way to change the default delimiter of the semicolon? I'd much prefer an ampersand so that my tags can stay consistent across my applications.

Questions / Multiple Artist Splitter
« on: August 19, 2016, 09:08:37 PM »
I'm contemplating switching over to MusicBee (I really like most of what I see), but I want to be sure that I understand how several features work before taking the plunge. One thing that I like is the Multiple Artist Splitter, but there are two things about it that I don't understand:

1) The options that I'm given when I split an artist are Artist, Guest Artist, Performer, or Remixer. What about using roles like "featuring", "with", or "presents"? Is there a way to add additional roles?

2) When I split an artist, it seems that MusicBee automatically rewrites the tags in the actual file. Is there a way to disable that? I've taken a lot of time to set my tags just the way that I want them. MusicBee deleted the "(feat. Artist)" from the tag when I used the Multiple Artist Splitter. That is an undesirable feature, especially if I later use another application to review that particular file.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

MusicBee Wishlist / Finding blank fields
« on: September 24, 2014, 08:42:56 PM »
I've configured the main window to show me the "Sort Album Artist" and "Sort Artist" fields. It appears that all of my tracks have those fields completed, but I know that many do not. When I click to edit tracks, I find that many don't have this information. So, apparently, MusicBee is showing me those fields populated with data from the Album Artist and Artist fields.

Per a suggestion from scampbll, I tried searching. When I search for Sort Artist or Sort Album Artist and look to match <has no value> no tracks are returned by the search, even though I know that many tracks don't have any data in Sort Artist or Sort Album Artist (and I checked to be sure...).

So, I guess my request is:

1) Allow MB to return search results for Sort Artist & Sort Album Artist when those fields have no data and/or
2) Allow a user to turn off having MB automatically populate those fields in the main window display when those fields don't actually have data.

Oops. Spoke too soon. When I search for Sort Artist or Sort Album Artist and look to match <has no value> no tracks are returned by the search, even though I know that many tracks don't have any data in Sort Artist or Sort Album Artist (and I checked to be sure...).

Questions / New User Impressed, But Confused
« on: September 05, 2014, 06:53:52 PM »
I'm a new user of MusicBee and I'm impressed at all of the tasks that can be accomplished by the program. That said, I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out how to accomplish a few things and I'd really appreciate any help (or even point me to the right place to find the answer myself).

1) I've configured MusicBee to show the artwork in the lower left corner (like iTunes); however, the artwork doesn't show for the selected track. The artwork only shows up when I actually play the track. Is there a way to change this behavior so that the artwork displays when the track is selected, not just when played?

2) I've configured the main window to show me the "Sort Album Artist" and "Sort Artist" fields. It appears that all of my tracks have those fields completed, but I know that many do not. When I click to edit tracks, I find that many don't have this information. So, apparently, MusicBee is showing me those fields populated with data from the Album Artist and Artist fields.

a) Is there a way to turn off that behavior so that MusicBee shows fields as blank when they don't yet have data?
b) Is there a way to search for tracks that don't have those fields completed so that I can add the correct data?

Thanks, in advance, for any help!
