Questions / MusicBee maximize button ~ Windows task bar
« on: May 18, 2019, 08:45:15 AM »
Usually when I hit the maximize button, I get full-screen mode.
Sometimes, it squeezes down & leaves the Window taskbar showing.
(I have that set to Lock on & Auto-Hide off).
I haven't found a setting for this .. Is there one?
(I'd like to always show my taskbar.)

Questions / Immediate read - single file
« on: June 06, 2015, 04:15:39 PM »
With all the attention paid to ID3 tags - different versions in different programs, and all of that (that covers many thousands of hours of discussions, here and elsewhere), I wanted to run some tests.
So I open MB and check out how the tags show on a particular file.
Then I switch over to MP3tag and edit the file there to see what happens to the MB version.
Then I go back to MB to evaluate the results.
But MB has its own DB version still.
To see the edit, I need to rescan everything.

So, it would be awesome to have a single right-click option for a file, in the main window, to "re-read file & tags"

Questions / 2.5 - Column Browser lost functionality.
« on: May 15, 2015, 01:05:03 AM »
One of my favorite things in MusicBee was that in the column browser, I could put up 2 copies of the Genre field, and the second would act as a subset of the first.  I use Genre extensively as a multi-value field, so this made browsing enormously easier & flexiblier.
Unfortunately, this seems to have been lost in 2.5 -- I can't find a way to get a second copy of a field up.
I installed: MusicBeePortable_2_4 (2014-10-18).zip
and downloaded: http://musicbee.niblseed.com/V2_5/MusicBee_Exe_Patched.zip
to overwrite, per instructions.
Can we get this back, please.

Questions / Installing Multiple Apps to a Common Directory
« on: May 11, 2015, 02:28:08 PM »
It has becomre quite tedious copying & checking for duplicates & versions between multiple apps that share the same plugins/addons.
I'm thinking of installing them all to a single AV directory.

This would mean that MB & WinAmp & Foobar2000,
plus LAME (3.99.5) & WinAmp-Essentials & Windows-Essentials-Codec-Pack,
would all necesarily be using the same support files, and I have a single place to look for update/configuration work.

Does anyone forsee problems with this approach?

Questions / 2.5 (beta) as Portable
« on: May 11, 2015, 06:19:07 AM »
I don't see anything about portable for the 2.5 (beta).
Can anyone tell me something?
I'm trying to clean up the entire installation of MB,
and this would help a lot - cutting down drastically
on the different locations for things.

Tips and Tricks / MusicBee Installation
« on: May 08, 2015, 11:43:38 PM »
I did this once before, and some people said it was useful.
Since I had to re-build a bunch of stuff, I tried to update it and clean it up.
There are still pointers that others would delete, but the stuff keeps coming up in discussions,
so I left them in, with notations.

Due to licensing restrictions MusicBee (and most other freeware players that havent purchased the required MP3 licenses) can only use the MP3

codec that comes already installed with windows. However the Windows 'N' series does not include this codec.

You can download it yourself from miscrosoft:

--------------------- gloveofpower

I've been looking for a compressor/limiter to use with my music which has a lot of adjustments available and sounds warm.

I tried out the stereotool one mentioned above in this thread, and thought that having as many options as it offers is awesome; and a
multi-band compressor is an excellent thing to have, but somehow, I felt that the quality of the sound was not to my liking.  It seemed like it
made everything sound more digital, and any 'bad' sounds inherent to the mp3/digital compression were emphasized.  Kinda harsh tonally.  I
tried EQing, and messing with the settings for a long time, but just couldn't produce anything that sounded good to my ears.

I like to use a program called T-Racks for my audio mastering when I produce. It's a VST that is quite powerful, and is meant to simulate tube
rack-mount equipment.  However, for my everyday listening, I wanted something that would be a bit more stable (ie a DSP meant to interact with
a playback program like MusicBee, rather than a VST, linked through some bridging DSP which is one too many layers of complexity for me).

There is a DSP called izotope ozone made for winamp which is meant to emulate classic tube mastering equipment that is quite good.  It has a pretty interface which matches up nicely with the MusicBee 'Dark' skin.  Although it is not a free plugin, it is worth the cost if you are looking for something to use long term, which has a pleasingly warm sound and a lot of adjustable settings.  I like to keep the room simulation bypassed (it's good for headphones though), put a gentle dip at 3.5kHz on the valve equalizer, bypass bass compression, about -10dB on the tube
limiter, and some light tube saturation starting at about 5kHz.  These settings give a nice analog sound with sufficient detail brought up
through the limiter that you can listen to your music at a moderate volume and still hear good detail.  The limiter is great to tame
instruments that are mixed super hot too.  Like most Miles Davis records--his playing has so much dynamic range that unless you turn it up
loud, you just don't hear everything in the quieter parts of his phrases.  A good compressor/limiter can remedy that.

Questions / 2 Tag/Edit Screens side-by-side
« on: May 03, 2015, 01:27:24 PM »
Many times I have 2 versions of a song, and just want to integrate the tag info.
For example, I'll have a low-res version of a song that has extra info (like lyrics) that the higher quality file doesn't have.
Is there any way to display the tag info for 2 separate files in a side-by-side arrangement, for quick comparisons & edits?

Questions / semi-colons
« on: April 20, 2014, 03:37:08 PM »
I have latest MB but not latest Windows .. various flavors of XP.

Multi-value fields are fantastically useful, and I'm using them throughout in the
Artist and Genre fields.  The problem is that Window seems to balk, and in odd ways.
An MB entry like "artist 1; {w}; artist 2" might appear in Windows as just "artist 1" or as
"{w}" or as "artist 1; {w}" .. most recently as "{w}; artist 1; artist 2 {w}"

This doesn't seem to be affecting MB's db, since I'm doing most editing there, but it
bodes ill for any export/sharing I might do.  What should I do?

Questions / tag fields
« on: April 12, 2014, 11:51:14 PM »
I've heard that .flac files don't store (don't have a field for) lyrics, like .mp3s.
I've seen updates in my database NOT be restored when wiping the database & re-scanning.

Does someone have a breadown of fields for various audio/video formats?
A most useful starting point would be a simple list of fields that apply to all.

I think one key point is whether (or where) all the work I do, inside MusicBee, is written out
to the underlying files, or only to the database.

:)

Questions / scanning different drives
« on: April 12, 2014, 11:41:46 PM »
My main library is on my main system as drive M: .. what happens if instead of rescanning from scratch, I want to backup the library, copy it across and import it on another system with a different drive letter and/or device-id.

I seem to remember a discussion, from very long ago, about MusicBee's differences regarding using drive letters versus other means of identifying drives/sources (which is, again, different from re-addressing a database to a copy of the source).

Am I in putting myself into the field of "portable" installations (which I haven't tried)?

Questions / Doing Everything
« on: April 12, 2014, 11:30:46 PM »
I wanted to share my music/video library, so I tried to set up an installation procedure for others to use MusicBee the way I do.

The following is a copy (incomplete) of my instructions (garbled) for my friends (at least they were before they read this).

The idea is just to get them from ground-zero to a nice running start.  I'd appreciate any feedback.

can't find a winamp dsp... only SPS preset - requires the winamp dsp studio plugin which doesn't load in musicbee. ideas?

A great plugin with a lot of features like a multiband compressor, equalizer, stereo image enhancer, limiter, autogain control and many others.
It works with Directsound or ASIO and there is a standalone VST version. It's a little busy at first use, but with presets and a little tweaking it becomes awesome.

Try a look at:

Crompressor & Wider

A very simple but useful dsp plugin to compress and enhance audio. Works only with 16 bit audio format.

Also, how to close this plugin: - mono downmix (and more)
http://www.winamp.com/plugin/wide-and-dynamix/3973 ? I mean, after I enabled it in DSPs it's GUI stays open. I have to disable it to close the GUI. I don't want it open, just enabled.
