MusicBee Wishlist / Option to disable tag inference from the filename
« on: November 02, 2023, 04:40:06 PM »
As was figured out in https://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?topic=40135, there is indeed some sort of inference algorithm. A toggle to disable it would be nice.

I think it would even make sense to disable it by default. Tags shouldn't get autofilled or pseudo-autofilled without letting the user know. Not to mention, if the user really wanted something displayed, they'd set the filename as a display field which the inferred tags are pull from anyway.

Questions / Disable tag inference from filename
« on: October 24, 2023, 02:37:04 AM »
I have recently realized most of my tracks are missing the Artist tag. I had no idea until a few weeks ago when I started seeing tracks with an empty Artist field.

I couldn't figure out what was happening until someone suggested that my media player might be inferring the tags from the filename and suggested I test it out by renaming the file. The test revealed that that is in fact what is happening, and the reason it has only now become apparent is I changed my naming from Artist - Title to Artist-Title (no whitespace) causing tag inference to fail.

I now need to identify how many tracks are missing the Artist tag (maybe other tags, like the Title, in case those are inferred too?) in order to hopefully find a pattern and see what causes this. For that I'd need to disable inference, but I'm unsure how to do that.

I don't think this inference functionality should be active by default at all. Artist is probably the most important tag. It should be obvious when it's blank by being shown blank.

Say you're filtering the tracks in a specific language using the Column Browser. Then within those files you want to perform a search:

It'd be nice if the search results came from whatever's currently in the Main Panel (in this case, the tracks in that language). As it stands, the results will be from everywhere.

Not sure what "Local Node Only" does, but the results are the same as with "Entire Library."

Questions / Display songs using NOT and AND operators in addition to OR
« on: September 05, 2022, 12:39:22 AM »
Suppose I have 3 tracks:
- Track 1's genres are Genre 1 and Genre 2.
- Track 2 has a single genre, Genre 2.
- Track 3 has a single genre, Genre 3

What appears to be possible (using Shift/Ctrl + Left-click):
- If I want to show Tracks 1 and 2 I'll select Genre 2 (or Genres 1 OR 2).
- If I want to show Tracks 1 and 3 I'll select Genres 1 OR 3.

What I can't seem to get working:
- If I want to show Track 1 only, that will require selecting Genre 1 AND 2.
- If I want to show Track 2 only, that will require selecting Genre 2 AND NOT 1.

I'm using the Column Browser.

Questions / Difference between No stars and Not Rated in metadata
« on: August 15, 2022, 07:28:32 AM »
The difference is of course quite obvious within MB, but I'm sorta "scared" to rate tracks with 0 stars because I'm not sure if there is a distinction outside of MB (in other words, within the tags).

For example, in File Explorer, both a track with 0 stars (i.e. one I hated) and an unrated track (i.e. one I could potentially love) look the same (I even tried sorting by the rating, and the only track I rated 0 ended up somewhere in the middle).
Other software may behave similarly, unless this is somehow standardized (maybe it is?).

So for portability's sake, should I avoid the "No stars" rating and rate the tracks I disliked the most with .5, or even 1 star instead (seeing how e.g. File Explorer doesn't display half-ratings)?

If a track has multiple artists and I go to Search - Find other artist - <Artist name> it will find all the tracks this artist is in.
If a track has a single artist and I go to Search - Find artist <Artist name> (there's no "Find other artist" option) it will only find the tracks with that single artist.
So for the same exact artist I can get 10 tracks in the former scenario and 20 tracks in the latter scenario.

Bug Reports / Tag Inspector messes up non-Latin metadata
« on: April 02, 2022, 08:59:28 PM »
Tag inspector seems to mess up non-Latin character encoding.
I wanted to edit a single genre in multiple tracks, and all the non-Latin fields turned into a bunch of question marks.
I have tried with Cyrillic, Japanese, Arabic, Korean metadata, all had the same behavior.

Questions / Discrepancy between Library Statistics and Music Explorer
« on: March 27, 2022, 09:39:50 PM »
Library Statistics was showing that I have 23 tracks from an artist, so I went to check what they were in Music Explorer but only saw 13.
This made me wonder how Library Statistics are calculated.

Is simply mentioning an artist (say, in the file name or the Comment tag, not in the Artist, Album Artist or Composer tags) enough to increment the count?
If so, I don't think that should be the behavior.
The behavior should be that only if the artist is listed in one of the aforementioned three tags, should the track count be incremented.

For example, if the filename is red.mp3 and the Artist tag is Tyler, the Creator;Eminem,  the track count should only go up for Eminem and for Tyler, the Creator, while the track count for Red (the band) should remain unchanged.

Questions / What counts toward Most Plyaed Artists in Library Statistics?
« on: February 21, 2022, 09:51:06 PM »
This question also applies to the Top 25 Most Played auto-playlist.

I almost never listen to music by searching up a specific track.
Instead I shuffle some playlist or the entire library, then skip a track if it's not what I want to listen to.

What are the conditions for an artist's/track's value to be incremented?
If they just counted total hits a track/artist has received, the "Most Played" lists wouldn't be very meaningful for me, because they would include all those skips and could as well be called "Top artists the shuffle algorithm chooses" or something haha.
OTOH if it were similar to last.fm where a track only counts if half of it's been played then it would work much better.

Questions / [SOLVED] See which songs are in playlists
« on: July 06, 2021, 05:16:00 AM »
I use playlists pretty extensively and have always wanted a way to know which songs in the Library are in playlists (or more specifically are not in any playlists). Right now to accomplish that I can Right-click - Search - Locate in Playlist for every song, but that's very cumbersome. It would be nice if I could see that information at a glance as one of the fields in the Library:

Questions / Auto-tag dry run
« on: July 05, 2021, 04:11:39 AM »
I would like to be able to see what tag changes are about to be made and checkmark the ones I actually want instead of having them be applied as soon as they're found. Kinda like with the Find and Replace tool. This could eliminate so many unintentional changes.

Questions / song encoding recognized incorrectly
« on: June 20, 2019, 08:31:38 AM »
Somehow half the mp3s that I know are encoded in v0 are shown as anywhere from v5 to v10. How does MusicBee check the encoding, and why would this  be the case? Using 3.3.7109 (latest at the time of the post).

In the auto-tag window (after selecting multiple files, right-clicking and going auto-tag by track -> identify), selecting only 1st two ticks (as in the title) and hitting proceed, I get a warning that existing tags will be overwritten, and the "update blank fields only" tick disappears. If I cancel the warning, the entire window freezes (loading cursor icon), and I can only cancel the auto-tag operation.

How can I identify based on music signature while also not updating existing fields?

Edit: forget to mention, I'm using the portable version 3.2.6902 (non-beta).
