Questions / Library Preferences - Check for Updated Files?
« on: March 27, 2021, 07:42:30 PM »
On the Library Preferences screen, there are two different options available for what sounds like essentially the same thing:

Under music library, there is a check box to check for updated or missing files on startup, and right below that, under monitored folders, there is an option to scan on startup only, and then a place where you can specify file locations.

What is the difference between these two options?  If I specify the drive location for my music files under monitored folders, doesn't this accomplish the same thing as the first check box?  Or is there a reason I might want to use both options?

Questions / MusicBee Installation Files Location
« on: March 27, 2021, 05:47:18 PM »
It seems as though the MusicBee Wiki is significantly outdated (at least everything I look up there seems to be).  But that is not really the subject of this question - just noting that I have tried to research the information and not been too successful.   I am actually contemplating starting to update the Wiki for the things I know, but that, too, is not the subject at hand.

What I have found in the Wiki, and in several other references to patches, updates, etc., all says that the MB installation files are in the Windows "c:\Program Files" folder, but on ALL of my computers where I have installed MB (all running Windows 10, 64 bit), the files are located in the "Program Files (x86)" folder.  This difference in expected location would seem to be a significant variation since the (x86) folder is specifically for 32-bit programs installed on 64-bit versions of Windows.  All of my installations have been done with the full downloads from this site, along with updates from the Latest Versions forum.

So what are the real facts?  Is this just a problem of poor and/or outdated documentation, or are there actually two versions of MB floating around (32-bit and 64-bit)?

Questions / Where to Keep Lyrics?
« on: March 21, 2021, 02:34:42 PM »
Just looking for opinions here.  Are there any particular pros or cons to storing lyrics embedded in the music file vs. as an external .txt file?  Since both of these options are available on the Tags (1) preferences, it would seem to be just as simple either way.  I can think of two possible negatives to embed them in the music file -
1.  adding or changing lyrics requires the entire music file to have a new backup, and
2.  no simple way to access those lyrics outside of MusicBee.

Anything else i should consider before making my choice?

And one other related question:  MB Preferences only offers embedded or .txt file for this, but on the sync screen, there is an option for saving lyrics in an .lrc file.  Why?

Running version 3.4.7735 with fresh download of LyricsReloaded plugin.

When track lyrics are displayed in the bottom right panel, I can Rt click on the lyrics and select "Search Next Provider", and it does as expected (finds lyrics in another available provider if they exist).  BUT, if I am looking at the lyrics in Now Playing, "Search Next Provider" does nothing at all.

Other Rt. click functions on the lyrics in Now Playing do work (such as "Edit Displayed Lyrics"), so this problem seems specific just to the "Search Next Provider" function on the Now Playing screen and not to the plugin.  I have tested this on multiple computers, with both release 7735 and a previous release, and the results are completely repeatable.

Questions / Where Does MB Look for Lyrics?
« on: March 15, 2021, 04:12:16 PM »
I have never paid attention to lyrics in MB, so this is a new subject for me.  I have done a search here, and although there are many posts about lyrics, nothing seems to really give me the basics.

Although many of the albums/songs in my library do show lyrics when played, many main-stream artists do not.  One example of something that really surprises me to not show lyrics is .38 Special, The sound of Your Voice, or Bone Against Steel.

I looked for the information in the MB Wiki, and it says that there are 4 included sources for lyrics:  ChartLyrics, LyricWiki, Gracenote, and LoloLyrics.
In the Preferences | Tags (2), under auto-tagging, lyrics:, I only see chartlyrics.com and LoloLyrics.  And even with just those two, I can manually find Bone Against Steel on chartlyrics, so why doesn't MB?

Have LyricWiki and Gracenote been dropped, or should I be looking somewhere else for this information?

I have found another very old thread (2017) with instructions for adding .yml files to the appdata folder, but I would like to understand what is going on before I just start following posts from that long ago.  Thanx

Questions / Installing MB for Two Accounts on One Computer
« on: March 06, 2021, 04:10:32 PM »
When I set up a new machine, I start by cleaning it up and loading software with the default Administrator account (using Windows 10).  After I have things pretty well set for a baseline, I do a backup that way, then add a new user account with only standard permissions, which I intend for daily use on that machine.

Most software installs automatically for all users.  Some software asks if it should be installed for only the current user or all users.  When I select All, everything works just fine with the new standard permissions account.  But MusicBee seems to be stuck somewhere between those.

When I install MB as the Admin, it works fine for that user, but when I then switch to the Standard User, it is not there.  Well, kinda not there.  It does not show up on any of the start menus, nor can it be found on the "Open with" sub-menu, but the program IS installed and can be seen in the Apps list.  It also can be started by directly going to the installation folder.  This is  the second laptop I have set up following this method, and the results are identical, so I do not thing it was caused by some unknown fluke the first time.

So my question is, am I just missing something stupid during the initial Admin installation, or do I need to do a fresh install from each user account?

And if I do a fresh install from the Standard User account, is that going to change anything on the Admin account?  I ask that last question specifically because I was able to run the latest 3.4 update from the Standard User account even though it is still not available as a normal installed app, so it undoubtedly found and changed the original install files.

Questions / Imported Playlists - Finding Matching Tracks
« on: February 23, 2021, 12:54:53 PM »
I asked about this three years ago when I was trying to do it with XSPF formatted playlists (which can support this), but that standard does not seem to be fully implemented in MB.  With the new MB 3.4 I was hoping this capability would be available, but I still cannot find a way.

Here is what I want to do - Import a playlist from another system and then have MB match the Artist/Album/Track to my library.

It is a relatively simple matter to manually open the imported playlist, select a track and manually locate it in the current library, even if the track is stored in a different format (e.g. playlist originally referenced .mp3 file, but manually matching it with a .flac file updates the imported playlist).  Although this is a simple process, it is obviously tedious for hundreds or thousands of tracks.

So is there anyway to automate that re-linking of the playlist track to the current library?  I tried using the "Send To File Rescan" function, which sounded promising, but did not work (maybe because the extensions did not match?).

Questions / All Tracks in Folder not Displayed for an Album - SOLVED
« on: February 15, 2021, 02:34:06 PM »
I was once getting quite good at all the details of MB, but I went away for the last year doing other things, and now I don't remember squat!  Let me briefly explain what I am trying to do:

BACKGROUND
I keep a main library on one computer, all lossless files, and I convert all those albums to v5 mp3 on my NAS for use in syncing other devices where I do not want to store the large files.  Have not had any problems with this process so far.  But today I noticed that some of the songs in the mp3 library did not sound quite right, so I went back to the lossless system and started to test, trying to find out where the problem originated.  The album I am using for this test is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.  I am currently running MB 3.3.7491.

THE PROBLEM
I used the File Converter to make a new copy of the track as MP3 Standard Quality, and I wanted to put it in the original library along with the source flac files to make comparisons easy.  I selected "output to the source file folder", and because of my "organize" settings, it created a new \Beatles\ folder under the existing album folder for that new mp3 track (I do not think that is a problem, just trying to include all the information).  But when I looked for the track to play it in MB, I could not find it.  So I assumed that the new sub-folder was the issue, and I manually copied the mp3 track into the main album folder using Windows file explorer.  Still could not see it, so I restarted MB.  I then saw the message that it found one new file in the monitored folders, so I knew it was really there, but it sill does not show up in the Album and Tracks display.

Now here is the final strange part I really do not understand:  My MB display is currently sorted by Album Artist on the left panel, and the center panel is Album and Tracks.  The Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album shows 13 tracks, all in FLAC format;  the new .mp3 file is not shown at all anywhere under The Beatles.  BUT, if I click on the title of the album to just display only that one album, then click on the album art to display all of the tracks, THAT display now shows all three copies of the first track (the original flac version, the new mp3 copy in the sub folder, AND the new mp3 copy in the main album folder with all the flac files).

So why does MB show all three copies of track 01 in the single Album display, but NOT in the Albums and Tracks display?

And just to confuse things even more, if I change the center panel display to be "Album Covers", and then click on the Sgt. Pepper's album to see the tracks, it does NOT show either of the two mp3 copies for the first track, only the original flac version.

I am ripping an LP where the entire side is one single unbroken track, but the label shows there are 7 different movements in that track (with no timing information to identify where they start or end).  When the album is shown in MB, I would like it to show both the track name and all the movements, just like the label does.

This is very similar to an album with a Medley that lists all the pieces of music that are included in the medley.

Is there a way to do this without having to break up that one big track into multiple files?

I was trying to track down why some albums were not displaying with the correct names in my DLNA server, when they looked fine in MusicBee.  What I found was that SOME tracks in an album had a different Album Name shown in the Tag Inspector field TALB than they showed in the main MusicBee edit screen.

For example, in the album 20 Years of Jethro Tull, all tracks correctly displayed that name in the main Edit window, but a few of them showed "20 Years of Jethro Tull Disc 1" in the TALB tag.

To have MusicBee displaying a different album name than is shown in the Tag Inspector seems to be a BIG error to me.

That album was ripped from a CD, but I have no way of knowing how many iterations of field edits it might have gone through since I originally ripped it.

In trying to fix the problem, I found that if I edited the album name in the main edit window for JUST ONE TRACK, it did change the TALB tag with the new name.  But if I tried to rename multiple tracks at the same time, the main edit window did show the name change, but the TALB tag for each of the tracks was NOT changed.  Sounds like a bug.  I am guessing that maybe this is what caused the problem, since this is a multi-CD set, and I know the disc numbers and album names were changed after the initial rip.

But to have only SOME of the tracks now showing a different album name in the TALB tag seems like a bug, right?  Maybe two bugs:
1)  The displayed album name should always match the value in the album name tag, right?
2)  When changing the album name for multiple tracks, all the tracks should have the tag updated.

Shouldn't ANY change to the album name of a track done within MusicBee cause the TALB tag to be updated also?  I do know for a FACT that I have never updated the tags for this album with any other tool.  Now I am worried about how to audit all of the thousands of albums/tracks I have in my library to try and find other instances of this problem!

Strange problem here - looking for any ideas on where to look...

First of all, the vast majority of my albums have artwork saved as a .jpg file, but a small number were crated with the artwork embedded in the music file (no idea why).  ALL of my albums show the artwork just fine in MusicBee.

All of my music files are stored on a Netgear ReadyNAS with integrated DLNA server.  I have just done a full rescan of all the files in the DLNA admin setup.  This issue affects only a very few of the albums where the artwork is embedded in the music file.  MOST of the albums with the artwork embedded display the art just fine in DLNA, but a FEW do not show any art at all in DLNA, even though they show the art correctly in MusicBee.

So the question is, where would I look to try and figure out why only a few of the albums with embedded artwork do not show that art in the DLNA server?

Questions / Liner Notes?
« on: April 21, 2019, 10:18:56 AM »
A search on this subject turns up virtually nothing except a wish list post from 2014.

I am still relatively new to MusicBee, and I only work with it on a daily basis in spurts as I move from one "hobby" to another.  But I thought I remembered seeing something about the ability to keep liner notes for albums in the library?

Am I just dreaming this up?  It seems like the subject would be an obvious one for a music application, but I can find nothing on it now.

Bug Reports / Enexpected Error - Please Report . . .
« on: September 11, 2018, 06:03:10 PM »
The last thing I did was try to search the internet for album art for Leon Bridges Coming Home.  Note here that the first response was nothing could be found, but after I pasted in artwork from Discogs, I tried the search again in MB, and it found lots of option like normal.

Questions / Basic Questions on Using Duplicates Manager
« on: August 15, 2018, 01:25:27 PM »
I have just started looking at the Duplicates Manager tool, and a few things are confusing me.

First, is there a way to control the order that the tool uses to find duplicates?

For example, how would I tell it to mark all the garbage in a "Best of" album as duplicates and keep the tracks in the original albums?  I know I can drag individual tracks from one side to the other, but what a huge pain that is for more than one or two tracks.  Instead, I want to be able to order the albums so it knows which ones are lower priority to me, and thus marks those as the duplicates.

Here is a specific case:  I have 4 albums by Aaron Neville - two originals, and two compilations, one of which is "The Very Best of".  There are five songs that are duplicated on the "The Very Best of", and I would like those to be hidden.  But when I run the Duplicates Manager, it ALWAYS defaults to saving the tracks from "The Very Best of" and hiding the tracks from the ORIGINAL albums!  Can I reverse this behavior?

Questions / How to Copy Genre Categories to a New Computer?
« on: August 08, 2018, 04:57:01 AM »
I spent Hours and Hours today cleaning up the Genre grouping in MB today to be something I could actually use.  I expected I could just copy those changes to MB on other computers in my home by simply using the Edit > Saved Settings > Saved Settings Snapshot function, then Load Settings Snapshot on the target computer.  No such luck.

I have absolutely no idea what settings are actually saved/reloaded with this function, but it sure didn't seem to have anything to do with the Genre Categories in Preferences.

I did some digging and found the GenreMapping.xml file in the AppData folder, so I took a chance and copied this to the new computer.  Was that the correct thing to do?  It seems to be working.
Thanx
