Questions / Issues with tag hierarchy explorer
« on: June 30, 2022, 12:00:39 PM »
I've recently reinstalled MB after about 2 years away from it, with the intention of reorganizing my library (as some other users of MB do) around a genre -> subgenre hierarchy (ideally in a way that I can take deeper than 2 levels, and tag with multiple branches of as well).

However, even after searching through the forums, I haven't really been able to make sense of any of the methods people used or been able to successfully set up anything through custom tags.

I've also tried making use of the Tag Hierarchy Explorer (alongside hiccup's Enhanced Genre Hierarchy List), but both during my initial attempts to use the panel prior to installation of the Enhanced list as well as after it the panel has displayed an "Error loading hierarchy file: Template is missing or corrupted 'Genres.txt'.

MB itself is installed on my C: drive while my library is on my D: drive, if that has any impact on this.

Does anyone have any insight on how I can get things to work here? Thanks.

Beyond MusicBee / How do y'all organize your libraries?
« on: July 07, 2021, 11:18:28 AM »
As far as organization of my music library went I used to use a system that'd probably be considered fairly run-of-the-mill - one level of genre tagging (although I did make use of multi-tagging), star ratings, the occasional attempt at making a playlist, and that was it. However, about a year or so ago I found myself getting to the point where in between deciding what genres/subgenres I wanted to distinguish between (and how I'd incorporate other people's descriptions of genre into that system, especially at the kind of level where I couldn't pick out exactly where something fit just by ear), and so I ended up ditching it, which has definitely worked better for me than something that had become a little confusing and underutilized for me.

However, I'm finally getting around to reorganizing both my actual file structure and doing a reinstall of MusicBee after I had some issues with it a couple of updates back, and I've decided I want to take this opportunity to look at and think about interacting with my music in the way that best suits me.

One solution I've considered to this is auto-tagging (either drawing from Discogs like I know other people do, or potentially other sources) - even if still 'flawed' (debates on genre taxonomy aside), it'd probably be more consistent and useful than anything I might come up with on my own at this stage.

I've also thought about re-engaging with the idea of playlists - but instead of making myself think in terms of actual playlists, using additional tag slots to develop 'collections' (e.g. vogue edits, gym music, those sorts of things).

I deal with fatigue that comes and goes as part of some long-term health issues, so the enthusiasm I have for how much energy I actually wanna invest in my library can vary from time to time accordingly.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on any of this, and/or organization methods you've found that might be worth trying out.

I'm running 3.3.7310 on my main computer, and I'd recently managed to revive a laptop I thought was dead, so among the files I'd retrieved from it was a backup of the instance of MusicBee (Version 2, but I don't know which update specifically) I'd had on there. I was trying to load the settings I'd had on that instance into my main version of MB, and since it showed a compatible and selectable file in the Load Settings Snapshot dialog, I thought I'd be able to load my settings in successfully.

However, doing so rendered my library and layout as seen in MB blank, as though it was a fresh install (the music files themselves along with the other files from my installation, appear untouched). When I try to load the "!! previous settings" file from the Saved Settings folder within my appdata folder, it gives me an unexpected error which it instructed me to report here:

I installed MusicBee (3.1.6512) on a new computer yesterday, copying in my settings I'd backed up from my previous computer's musicbee installation - there was no AppData folder set up by the new MB installation, but when I named the folder of previous settings AppData and copied it into the installation folder on the new computer, I found MB had successfully taken on all the settings without complaint.

I then pointed MB to scan a folder on the new computer I have all my music files in, and it again entered everything into a library without issue.

However, I have two issues that are happening everytime I launch MB:

- The first is MB telling me I need to select a library to continue upon starting the program (despite the fact I do not have "always prompt for library selection when MusicBee starts up" turned on. (It suggests paths that I've used at two different points for the library on the previous computer, if that's at all relevant). I point it to the .mbl file that the installation's made on the new computer each time.... it still makes the same request upon startup.

- The second is even though all my files have artwork embedded within the music files (which I can still view and interact with Artwork tab in the Edit dialog, and which displays in the Track Information panel on the Right Sidebar), the Main Panel itself displays the albums as if they have no cover art.

Does anyone know what could be causing either/both of these?

I imported a collection of mp3 files from the same source into MB, and while the others all came in fine, one file in particular shows up as 50 seconds shorter than its actual length, and while I can edit the tags and so on, when I attempt to play it I get an "Unable to play this file - it has an unsupported format or is corrupted" message.

I opened the file with VLC media player and and it played for the full and actual length with no issues, so while I haven't tested it with other media players besides that it seems fairly safe to say the file isn't actually corrupted.

Is there anything I can do about this? Thanks.

Questions / Library on Portable HDD
« on: August 31, 2014, 01:57:37 PM »
Since my hard drive's fairly small, I keep my music on a 1TB portable drive - is it easy enough to get MB to use a folder on it as my library?
