Questions / Re: How do I update 3.4.xxxx PORTABLE to 3.5.xxxxx PORTABLE?
« on: January 08, 2024, 03:23:24 PM »
Speaking only about version 3.5.x, the Portable version download is clearly marked on the official Downloads page;  just click the "Get MusicBee Portable" button.  After that, follow the instructions I posted linked here, but in Step 4 be sure you specify the folder that currently holds your portable 3.4.x version, allowing the process to overwrite any existing files, and your installation should be properly updated.  BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP COPY of your existing 3.4 folder first.

That said, I agree with hiccup and Zak about the need for a developer written website guide explaining how to install and/or update both the Installer and Portable editions in clear detail, and explaining the drawbacks of choosing the Windows Store Edition.  These questions come up repeatably here.
Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

After reading the preceding post of Zak's, I was confident in running the "MusicBeePortable_3_5.exe." in my current MusicBee Portable folder and I witnessed it updating successfully.

I've followed your link and visited your post. It is very concise, and could have been helpful, if it showed up in the forum search I initially did using the keywords: "upgrade" & "update".

I would like to suggest that you edit the title to and/or include in the content:

"TOPIC: HOW TO INSTALL or UPGRADE MUSICBEE PORTABLE"

"How to install or upgrade MusicBee Portable as packaged:"

You are certainly not to blame for not finding a good explanation on this.
It's a pretty big omission that there is not a basic FAQ that explains essential stuff like this.
(f.w.i.w. I have tried helping setting things up—more than once—but failed)

For as far as I understand, you should download this:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/1ndhp0n59e86txf6avb0b/MusicBee_Setup_3_5_8698.zip?rlkey=sk5tbjmsj399qvwdod3dyevvp&dl=1

and then execute it in the folder where you have 3.4 installed.
That should upgrade things to 3.5

And, while at it, I would suggest updating to 3.6. Even though there is no official release for it yet, it has proven to be stable and has the latest fixes and features:

Go here, download "MusicBee36_Patched.zip", extract it, and overwrite the files in your existing MusicBee installation folder with its contents.

Be sure to make a copy of your existing portable install folder first.
Even though I'm a MusicBee 'veteran', this stuff is still not completely clear to me also.

I appreciate your effort and response.

However, it appears, and from the link you provided, you may be referencing the  'standard' Windows' program installation, and not a 'Portable' application usage.....

Previously, I would extract the zip file contents and copy the many new files and folder into my MusicBee Portable local folder.

But, the 3.5 Portable zip file only contains on file: MusicBeePortable_3_5.exe. Does this file and installer and automatically unzip its container and replace my current files? I do not want to proceed unknowingly.

I cannot find any instructions here nor is there a text file in the zip.

Not a very decent question & pointless on top of that:
Just out of curiosity, why did you bother to sign up and create this pointless, and incorrect, reply?

Howdeees.....

What is in the latest patch, and where is it available?

Thanks!

:)

I just updated to 3.3.7259 P

Then ran it as Admin, reset: "Edit Preferences > File Type". MB Context items still not showing in Windows Explorer dropdown.

Next, I closed MB, then in Windows Explorer, I again "Open with > Choose another file" and pointed a MP3 file to the MusicBee.exe in my Portable folder. MusicBee opened the file. Now I checked Windows Explorer dropdown and success.

Anybody have any updates for this? Just installed MB on a new install of Win10 and have no context menu. Tried most of the fixes above without success. Just installed the latest MB without any improvement for this feature. I miss it.
As Steven said, it has nothing to do with MB. And Steven can't make any improvement to it. You need to Google for it as Steven has stated.

Wrong, and even more wrong!

The fixes that Steven suggested do not work, either anymore nor on Win 10 PRO and now worse after Tuesday's 1909 update.

First, the issue or topic is abooot MB Context Menu items not showing in the Windows Explorer menu principally, not how to set the file types/defaults.

Secondly, on my 3 Windows PRO machines, using MB's Edit Preference > file types no longer works. It is hard to point the finger at Microsoft solely here, since they didn't create the feature.

Third, even after I had to jump through many hoops, I was marginally successful in getting the Context menu to populate and ONLY on the Portable version, after Tuesday's Windows 10 1909 update the MB context menu not only disappeared, but I cannot get it back and even with my previous 9 step method....

I am using the Portable Version.

Why are artist thumbnails stored in 2 separate folder locations?

"H:\OneDrive\MusicBee\AppData\InternalCache\ArtistThumbs" using 262 MB of space, all PNG's.

and

"H:\OneDrive\MusicBee\Library\Artist Pictures\Thumb" using 194 MB of space, all JPG's.

Both folders got/get populated at the same time.

This seems redundant, and is taking $pace on my cloud acct.

Is there a way to remove and disable one or the other?

Bug Reports / Re: MB Context Menu items not showing Windows Explorer...

I think Windows made another change and you now have to go into Windows Settings> Apps> Default apps and select MusicBee as your default Music player for the Explorer Menus to stick.

I went to  Windows Settings> Apps> Default apps. I reset all to Windows Default which made Windows Media Player the default for Music Player. I then selected MusicBee for the new default and now the Context Menu items for MB REPLACED the Windows Media ones.

Success? Yes.... and no.

The above was for the Portable version, so I figured I would now try again for the Desktop Version. I removed the Portable version, reinstalled the Desktop version. However, when I went into Windows Settings> Apps> Default apps, the drop-down only allows me to select the Store version app, with no recourse to choose the Desktop version/exe, nor even after I  manually chose a few file type associations.

Ok, so I uninstall the Desktop version, install the Store version, and then select the Store version as the default.... MB Context Menu items won't show in Explorer.

Now I am back to using the Portable version. To get the MB Context Menu items to show, I had to go through right-click>open file with>choose another app and select the musicbee.exe in the Portable version C:/musicbee directory folder. This time though the MB Context Menu items sit above the Windows Media ones and not replace them.....

...I may try the Desktop version again, but this time point directly to the exe.

Update: I tried again with Desktop and Store versions, Context Menu items will not show in Explorer menu.

I've installed to Portable version, run as admin to set "Enable MusicBee in Windows Explorer and context menus.", but still no luck getting it to work. It appears that when I press the 'Apply' button MB is not completing the process.

Any ideas? This a new Lenovo Tablet X1 running Windows 10 Pro 1903, and as Admin.....

Yes, I meant Store edition, not Start.  :-[

I will try the Portable version, and see if I get the menu items back...

Bug Reports / MB Context Menu items not showing Windows Explorer...
« on: November 08, 2019, 10:59:39 PM »
It appears the MB Context Menu items no longer show in the Windows Explorer Context Menu in Windows 10 1903, MB 3.3.7165 Desktop or Start versions anymore.

It used to work, but not anymore.

Will this function be fixed or revived?

Hello,

When saving(Export) the Panel Layout or Settings Snapshot, does it save all the configuration settings that are available in 'Preferences/Layout(1) or Layout(2)' and/or 'Arrange Folders'? Are there exceptions or limitations?

Does it save the Theme too?

What are the differences between the 2 procedures?

Thanks!

Questions / Saving Layout, Library settings for new or re-installations....
« on: December 29, 2018, 10:30:23 PM »
Hello,

Is there a procedure for saving Layout, Library settings for new or re-installations?

I have 3 different machines, and from time to time I do fresh OS installations.  I would like to not have to loose my custom layout and make it easy to setup again.

Thanks!
