Hmmm. I wonder why this happens for some albums and not others? It's not the # of tracks.  I have MusicBee fully expanded in my smaller monitor.

Yes, it does put them in columns in my larger monitors but A) I prefer keeping MB open in my scratch monitor (which is not a low res monitor, it's a quality 23" Dell), and B) this had never been a problem for me before this year, to my knowledge).

I was correct in that much of the problem is that I am using MB on separate machines and copying files from one machine to the other.

So warning to everyone who'll be doing the same that unless your library is on the cloud or is a shared library between machines on the same network, you're going to have playlist and duplicate track issues.

Questions to the admins/developer are:

A) Can something be done by users in one of the libraries that could act as a workaround
B) Is there a way already in MB where we can tell it to sync/overwrite based on selected metadata fields only (ie, not worry about the last modified date, etc.)
C) Might our amazing developer(s) consider other changes to prevent this kind of duplication?

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the reply, Phred.

The create sub-folder box is not selected and hasn’t been to my knowledge.  A long time ago, I think I read that as a suggested tip.

So I created a new track and imported it, created 3 new playlists and added that track to each one  and ran a test and it performed like it should (did not duplicate).

But then I tried again to preview sync of an existing playlist and again, it showed that it was set to re-copy every track that’s already on the device.

I’m NOW hypothesizing that the problem is related to the fact that I use MB on two different computers (work and home).  I’m able to log into the work computer remotely from home and I DID take care to ensure that all of my preference settings were the exact same on both machines*.  I also copy updated tracks and playlists between machines.  I bet that copying the track to my home machine and then attempting to sync it will cause a duplication.

Does that sound like the culprit?  I hadn’t read anywhere else that it might cause this issue but it’s the only thing I can think of now.  Perhaps because MB is reading the modified date field so it can presume whether to overwrite?  And since I transfer modified files between the machines, it’d mean I’ll surely have this problem on either machine right now.

Thoughts?
Suggestions for cleanup w/o starting from scratch?  Got a 5-day road trip coming up and it'd be cool to have the playlists right.
Sound like anything that could be changed in MB in the future? "update tracks that are already on the device" option on the sync preview screen?

Thanks again.

*I’ve read that there’s a better (not necessarily easier) way to ensure that libraries are identical between two computers by copying and editing library files.  Not sure that’d resolve this though.

I’m afraid this likely something that’s been posted before (and I have checked) that has yet to offer a solution to the problem:

Playlist syncing to devices to your device and it causing the song(s) to be duplicated on your device.

There are two separate problems likely with the same cause that I do not know how to get around.

#1  Let’s say I’ve manually added “Cal Tjader – Mood For Milt” to my device (Astell & Kern AK70 if anyone’s wondering) months ago.  Later, I decide to create a playlist in MB called “Autumn Jazz Playlist”.  I want to sync that playlist to my device so I do… and what happens is on my device, “Cal Tjader – Mood For Milt” is on there twice.  Same exact file, no manual changes made to it at all.

#2  Let’s say I’ve recently added “Bad Rabbits – Get Up And Go” to my library and I put it on 2 playlists (List A, and List B).
Certainly it gets loaded to my device if I sync List A.  But then when I sync List B, “Bad Rabbits – Get Up And Go” gets duplicated on my device, even though nothing’s changed about the file.

Last year, I thought the reason was because I was just right clicking on the playlist and sending to the device.  Then I read what I could read and went “Ah! I should be doing a device sync instead.  Maybe that’ll fix it!”   Fraid not.  Even when I preview the sync, it says it’s going to copy most of the files I know are already on the device, so I don’t do it.  [see attachment]

It’s a bit of a nightmare and I’m a little surprised there are very few existing posts about this (unless many have been deleted).  All the ones I’ve seen are unresolved or perhaps the person had a different concern vs. what they wrote in the topic header.

PROPS to the admins, I know there’s little time to reply to everything and it’s in their best time interests to keep replies concise.  But I really would be grateful to know whether this is something I’m doing wrong, something the MB system can’t accommodate (variation in devices, etc.) or something that’s being worked on or could be worked on.  Any answer is fine, I’m certainly not complaining about freeware.
If you’re a non-admin user and know how to overcome this, if you can please handle with kid gloves in explaining step by step what I may be doing wrong?

Thank you.

BTW, I am using Version 3.2.6827

I’m having this problem using an Astell & Kern AK70 DAP.

Version 3.2.6760

I have songs that appear on multiple playlists.  So when syncing, the songs get loaded on my player multiple times.
In actuality, whether a song is on multiple lists

Settings:
Synchronize Playlists: ‘selected playlists only’

Playlists paths = Playlists\
Create a sub-folder for each playlist and its tracks = Unchecked.
Save as format: M3U
Use relative file paths = Unchecked

Anyone have any advice?

When I set this setting to "Sort Artist", it doesn't remain selected.   I'll select that option and then sync tracks/albums to my device once.  But then it will automatically change this setting to "Display Artist".

I'm doing everything right (I click save and then apply, then save to exit the preferences screen).

Can this get fixed so that it stays saved?   I got a new DAP and this is really hampering syncing music on it and it's the worst thing in the world when these new DAPs always elect to display albums by song artist.

Thanks.

Tags (2) : I tried clearing auto-tagging for everything but lyrics by unchecking the boxes, clicking apply and then save.  But those boxes become checked again right away after clicking the save button.

Devices: Configure/Settings: "replace artist tag with".   It seems to always revert back to Display Artist.

Questions / Re: Replace Artist with Album Artist on device
« on: September 28, 2017, 07:47:26 PM »
For what it's worth, GoneMad Music Player and Rocket Player both support Album Artist (you may need to activate in Preferences).

But on the MB end, you could use the Additional Tagging & Reporting Tools plugin to copy Album Artist to Sort Artist, so that you can use Sort Artist when syncing.

Sorry to drag this old topic up but I'm a semi-new user who also can't stand it when my DAP displays album artists by the song artist tags.
I saw your recommendation about copying the Album Artist tag to the Sort Artist tag, which would seem to work wonders!

The only problem is, I have the plugin, but I don't see a list value for "Sort Artist" in the drop downs.  Any advice?

I am having the exact same issue and I'm using V. 3.1.6445, the latest.

Before this, it would randomly just put a 1 in either of the 2 fields.  Now it's putting a dash there.

It's also randomly removing album art.

MusicBee Wishlist / Indicate Which Tracks Are Already On Your Device
« on: August 24, 2017, 06:02:46 PM »
Bear with me as I'm POSITIVE this has been requested before but I'm new.

What I'd love is for there to be a symbol/icon next to a track name indicated whether the track is already present on the connected device.

I'm transitioning over from Zune's s/w to the MusicBee app and since I'm also starting to use a new DAP, I want to sync the exact same tracks that were on my Zune HD on to my Opus#1 device.

If you take a look at the attachment, Zune has an icon on the right to show which tracks are already present on the player.  It's extremely handy.

As of yet, I haven't come across this kind of thing on MusicBee.  If it's already in there and I just have to change my layout settings, please let me know.

Thanks.

Questions / Re: quick poll: how many people use individual track rating?
« on: August 24, 2017, 03:45:50 PM »
Yes, I do.

It can help easily distinguish between versions of a song.  Plus, I'm weening off of Zune where you were able to sort songs within an album or within an artist for all their albums.  Then I could play them and not have to bother making a playlist or skip tracks I don't want to hear.

I must concur!  It would be absolutely fantastic to have a hotkey (or be able to assign a hotkey) to "send to [portable device].  It's a bit of a chore to right click and make the selection.

[overkill info]

I'm changing from my Zune HD (which can't sync with MusicBee) to an Opus#1 DAP and since I've no interest at all in putting entire folders/albums on the DAP (I prefer just not having songs I won't listen to on the DAP at all).  So I'm going through the arduous task of syncing songs and that's a whole lot of clicks and meticulous selection to do.

So if this is in the next version I'd e ELATED! :-)
