I have been playing recently with some highlighting rules and thought it would be nice if we share the rules we are using. So these are the ones i'm using in the following order:
1) Rate this file, conditions:
Rating has no value
Playcount is greater than 4 times
Color yellow like a standard rating star
2) Select, for files in a temporal folder i use for deciding what to do with them:
Date added is not in the last 6 weeks
Play count is greater than 4 times
Path contains "seleccionar" (is the name of my phisical temporal folder)
Color green, it's ready to decide if maintain or delete it
3)Recently played, useful for easily knowing if i listened it recently:
Last played is in the last 7 days
Colour red, like hot
-
4) Forgotten good songs
Rating is greater than 3.5 stars
Last played date is not in the last 12 months
Optional: Date added is not in the last 12 months, can be useful if you have still not played it
Optional2: Skip count is less than 5 times
Color orange, like summer, good vibrations
-
I'm not using them to their full potential but here are mine:
1) Files to replace
- file with 128kbps
RED
2) & 3) Files on Sansa
>Internal memory storage on my mp3 player, purple if on the playlist I sync
>External memory storage on my mp3 player, pink if on the playlist I sync
That's it :P

Thanks Being good, i like the idea of the highlighting files on an external device. It's something :D

;D
Well, I sync a playlist to my device because I have too much music to be able to sync everything so it became a nightmare looking through my library and then having to check each playlist to see if I had already included it or not so it's a very simple highlighting rule but it really is a godsend for me to be able to see what is on my device quickly when I am looking through my library.
I like the idea of yours, I hadn't thought much about using many rules/conditions. I especially like the recently played and forgotten songs.
I just wish there was a way to show more than one highlight because as far as I can see if you have a file that matches more than one highlight then it only shows one.
-
beeing good, what equation are you using to highlight tracks in a playlist? I just can't figure it out.
Gah, never mind. I didn't realize I had to make the highlight rule active. I was trying to figure this out for like, 20 minutes, and then as soon as I ask I figure it out.
Playlist + Is + <Playlist Name>
-
Yeah that's it ;D

Btw thought I should just say that, as a relatively junior member of these forums, these kind of threads are really useful, cos the more experienced members have, on the whole, explored the more unusual features of MB better, and have insightful uses of various functions.

I set up a highlighting rule for playing album. This setting seems to override Now Playing highlighting settings for playing track. And cannot find a highlighting rule that displays a different color for playing track. Am I missing something?
-
Solved it.
For others who would wonder about this:
When setting the highlighting rule for playing album:
match: all
album is [playing track]
title is not [playing track]
does the trick. This makes playing track follow Now Playing highlighting setting.
-
Good to know the rule "title is not [playing track]". Thanks for sharing it (Y)
-
Great tip! This should be added in the How To's forum.
-
Here is one more tweak I added to my highlighting settings.
Problem
After setting up different colors for both playing album and playing track, they are now easy to discern.
But when playing track is selected, it's not easy to find out which track is playing track. You have to look hard for the small speaker icon.
Solution
Set up another rule for playing track:
match: all
album is [playing track]
title is [playing track]
Playing track is now standing out even when it is selected.
This is how it looks when another track is selected.

Note that playing track's light-green-color highlight bar is set by highlighting settings, whereas its cyan-color text is set by Now Playing settings.
-
I have tested a rare case where "title is not [playing track]" fails, it is when another track has the same title than the playing track.
Have to say i don't have enabled the highligting column, i change colour of the text instead. So i did a bit more testing and decided to do this:
-Preferences\Now playing\Playback: Disable highlighting playing tracks
-Preferences\Tags(2)\Highlighting\Define rules: Add as the first rule the next one
+ Path is [playing track]
+ Filename is [playing track]
BTW it seems to keep the text color rule while the track is selected :)
-
+ Path is [playing track]
+ Filename is [playing track]
Yeah, that would be more precise! :)

You mean like this?

Hmm.. can't say which one is better. Maybe it's depending on a skin, but at least the problem's gone.
-
I use the highlighting rules rather for shading specific tracks.
Just like greyed-out tracks (dead links) look like.
As mentioned here (http://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?topic=7781.0) this way I visualise tracks which I own on CD but which are not ripped to harddisk. So to say: "offline tracks".

EDIT: I forgot to mention what was intended by the initial post - the rule itself. It's pretty simple:
Color all ASX-files grey (.Ext is 'asx')
-
Well, I mean, it doesn't really take any time.

Now Touring
placed in #1 position
Touring? | is | 'Y' with SongKick icon (download here (http://www.mediafire.com/download/5f8u8pxpqdghe4r/sk_logo.zip))
will temporarily override other highlights with (http://i.cubeupload.com/IuTCqV.png) when artist is touring

hi there,
maybe noob question:
where and how can I set up those rules?
I´d really like to change duophonic skin´s highlighting color
and the thingy with the small speaker icon is also very annoying for me
so here I see the solution in front of my eyes and don´t know how to implement it.
Any help?
-
Highlighting rules can be set under Preferences> Tags (2).
But it won't address any of your issues. You'd better talk to the skinner as that skin is un-editable.

un-editable as in "highlighting rules" do not work in this template?
(tried to highlight all - bitrate - smaller than - 192k and it did not work)
-
Highlighting works for any skins (Maybe you didn't tick text option or didn't add highlight column to the main panel).
But both of your issues (highlight bar and speaker icon) can be addressed only by editing the skin.

thanks a lot!
adding the highlight cloumn helps a lot ;-)
Rule:
All | title | is | actual title
gives me a nice green square - can live without the highlighted bar for the moment

Hi everyone,
In the INBOX view, I 'm searching how to highlight with a "!" icon each time it's not ready to by automatically sorted and I would like to highlight the files when the folder contain tracks with many artist.
How would you do that?
thanks a lot !

didn't understand this, maybe my english is too poor
and I would like to highlight the files when the folder contain tracks with many artist.
do you mean folder of file system? install additional tagging tools plugin, open auto library reports, create new preset, add 'grouping (Path)', add function 'count(URL)', assign some virtual tag function id to preset, update it (save it).
create highlighting rule: virtual function id | is greater | 1000
or some other number instead of 1000
plugin:

Three icon positions, always in the same order:
- Is the piece instrumental, sung with accompaniment, sung a cappella or spoken?
- Language flag (or empty if instrumental)
- Lyrics available?
