Title: A Sophisticated Bee
Post by: jistme on December 07, 2012, 09:36:36 PM
My take on a comfortable and well-behaved skin.

(no loud music on this one please!)

There are two download links:

- Skin version 2.5 which is compatible with MusicBee v2.x releases.
This one is final and will be no longer maintained.

- Skin version 3.x which is only compatible with MusicBee v3.x releases.

download A Sophisticated Bee 2.x (https://rebrand.ly/skin_A_Sophisticated_Bee_2x)

download A Sophisticated Bee 3.x (https://rebrand.ly/skin_A_Sophisticated_Bee_3x)

edit Jan 2016:

The version for MB 2.x is finalized and won't be maintained any longer, a new version for 3.x only is added.

Please feel free to comment, be it good or bad.

Very nice Jistme, I like what you've done with the selection highlighting.

Nice work again jistme.
Very restrained and understated.
The splash screen made me chuckle though, very "old world"

Yeah, but it might fit your Bee78 better ;-)
Btw, don't chuckle out loud, his hearing is still 20/20, and he might feel offended and defend his honor properly.

Thnx, I was also triggered a bit by a suggestion/request from somebody (maybe you) a while back for an 'easy on the eyes' light skin to do some mileage on.
I made 'Jistme on the Outlook' for that purpose, but I suppose after a while you might get some slight blue poisoning from that one.

Updated.

No big changes at first glance, but a vast amount of small fixes and improvements.

A request to the experimenting types with some spare time on their hands;
Please give it a test drive with different settings and layouts. I completely revised the xml, and if this is working well, it will also be the template for my other skins.
(it would be a pity if any possible flaws would be copied to those too)

Thanks in advance!

Love that blending on the Player display panel, and the Command buttons just pop, but it's those repeat and shuffle buttons that really get me. I still think they are one of the best (if not the best) designs anybody has come up with for their skins.

Thnx Bee-liever.

So not stumbling onto any bugs either?

- "just pop" is good, right?
- I have yet some doubts about the vertical placing of the shuffle/repeat icons. Maybe better make it horizontal? (like I did in 'Ebony and Ivory')

I'm still waiting for your (no-doubt even more creative) implementation of such sort of shuffle/repeat buttons...

Your choice (of course!) but I think the vertical look is great  :)

I decided on horizontal, I think it looks cleaner for this one.

Hey Jistme, I love this skin and just started using it yesterday but I had a small issue with invisible text that caused me to think musicbee was bugged!

I made a post in the bug section with pictures if you want to see what I mean:

My apologies for causing your mystery problem, and thanks for reporting 9cupsoftea!

I believe I ran into this problem before a while ago, the reason being the color for this text is shared with some disabled input controls in the configuration panel.
I tried a compromise to make it work for both positions. The skin is updated.
Let me know if you think it's not quite satisfactory.

Cheers!

Made some small refinements.

(and updated the screenshot in the startpost to reflect the improvements since the first version)

I noticed the nice visualizer improvements on this one and decided to try it out, since it's mellow enough for doing lots of library work on.

Really nice!  The only thing I would change is the background on the main tabs in the left sidebar, but that's just my personal preference.  I like for the whole thing sidebar to have a solid background.

You refer to the title bars like 'Library', 'Playlists', Internet' etc. right?
In most of my other skins they are indeed of a solid color, but that can also make it all look a little 'boxie'

For this skin I myself really like the gradients here.
If there is any problem with readability let me know, else I'm afraid I'll keep this one to my own taste ;-)

No worries, it was just a comment.  Actually, I think having the gradients in both sidebars keeps it balanced.

Hey ZenHarmony,
Is it not displaying at all, or is it displaying differently from the way it looks in the screenshot?
Title: Re: A Sophisticated Bee

It's actually showing as the set of little vertical bars that appears to me to be the default for the player. I just updated to version 2.1.4922 and it still isn't working for me. Is it maybe a plugin that I'm missing?

Thanks,

Lisa

Have you right clicked in the right sidebar and gone to "Customize Panel Settings"?  If you check the box for spectrum visualizer that you find there, it should show up.

The player spectrum bars are turned on and off totally separately.  That setting is in Layout (2) in Preferences, I believe.  You might also be able to find it in a right click menu.

(Good luck finding all the settings!  I've been working with MB for over six months and still regularly find new features.)

Sorry for resurrecting the dead, but I was wondering if this skin is officially dead?
It is the only skin I like in MB and I would be heartbroken to see it not compatible with version 3.

Hi Novatlan, in a former life, jistme was my alias.

Thanks for this big compliment and appreciation. I remember it took me a ridiculous amount of time and effort to create and fine-tune this skin to my own liking. Very nice to hear it's still appreciated by others too.

Don't worry, I will try to maintain this baby (and a few other of my skins) for as long as I will be using MusicBee myself.

It could even be that if you download it from the given download link, you get a more recent version than the version that is included with MusicBee nowadays.
Later on I have made some improvements, and I am not sure if that newer version was included later on. (you could check the file size for that)

Cheers!

This skin has been updated.
The download link has been updated in the starting post of this topic.

Changed:
Under MusicBee v2.x it was not behaving very well with custom font types and sizes for the player info panel.
Gradients and fonts in the player panel would easily get distorted.
That should now have been fixed, and the skin is also up to date for 'MusicBee v3demo'
(which is under development and in alpha stage at this moment of writing)

Please feel free to comment, be it good or bad.

Is there a way to have both versions installed? I regularly switch between MusicBee 2 and 3.

I'm glad you like it. It's my personal default skin, so I'll surely try to keep maintaining it.

Are you running MB 2 and 3 from the same folder, so sharing the same skin folder too?
Then you'll only have to make sure the skin versions for 2 and 3 have different file names.
e.g. "A Sophisticated Bee 2.xmlc" and "A Sophisticated Bee 3.xmlc".
Then they can be in the same skin folder, and will both be seen by both v2 and v3.
