Title: Artist Pictures
Post by: Steven on September 23, 2012, 01:19:05 PM
MusicBee makes use of a couple of great websites for high quality artist pictures:
http://fanart.tv/
http://www.htbackdrops.com - no longer available
http://www.htbackdrops.org (included in v2.2 of musicbee)
http://theaudiodb.com

I just wanted to advertise these websites so people are more aware (I have no affiliation to any) and suggest if you do have any good quality artist pictures that you upload them to these websites so others can benefit as well.

Yes its a sticky but I am not sure its unintentional. Maybe Steven wants to avoid what happened with albumartexchange by giving the sites more recognition and support

The developer came and demanded Steven to remove its database from MB immediately. So that was that...

Analytics sent me this way :)

Don't worry about being asked to remove fanart.tv from MB I released an API so that other programs could use us :)

I do appreciate you trying to give us more exposure though, the more people that visit the site the better :)

Great pics indeed. Is there any way to use these pics in Theater mode? all I get is Flickr...

Is there any way to use these images when grouping by artist in artwork mode?  If I try to use artist pictures there, they're always poor quality.

p.s. in Preferences, it lists the site as fanart.com rather than fanart.tv.  Fanart.com is a junk site.  Doesn't seem to affect functioning, though.

If you know good websites for classical music artist pictures, please let me know. Most pictures gathered by Google are too small and not looking good.

Haven't seen answer to this question by scampbll. Is it possible to control which images are shown in case the image is wrong, you don't like it or the quality is poor?

Thx.

Probably that won't looking good in artwork view since the chances are that most of those pics are not in square shape. That's why current artwork view images are low quality (If there's a web source that provides high-quality square-shape artist pictures other than last.fm, the problem will be easily solved).

To modify those pics manually, you might want to use this workaround.

I simply wanted to save the picture in ArtistThumb folder for Artwork view without embedding it in the music file, and found a workaround. Because MB not only embeds the picture in the music file but also updates the cache with it I only need to remove the picture from the file after using "Paste Artwork" command. Then MB still keeps the cache for Artwork view, which was all I wanted.

But keep in mind that you'll need to crop the picture in square type before pasting it if you want them looking good in artwork view. And this "Paste artwork" command is for main panel of artwork view or artwork tab in tag editor. So do not confuse it with the same command for compact player and playing track tab.

Thanks redwing! Took me a while to find out the "Paste artwork" trick but finally made it.
I can live with low quality pics but what annoys me are wrong/missing images.

You're welcome! Probably I had to mention that command is only visible when an image is stored in clipboard by copying it.

Just on this point, fanart.tv has an "Artist Thumb" section under every artist, with all such images at 1000x1000px.

Yeah! Looks like the site currently has more than 7000 of such pics. I really hope Steven will investigate this option.

I have applied for theaudiodb.com

given that htbackdrops.com is no longer available i have replaced it with theaudiodb.com (http://theaudiodb.com)

if you do have any high quality artist pictures then please upload them to that site and fanart.tv for the benefit of everyone

i will add it back in for the next v2.2 update of musicbee

Is there a way to specify where the artist pictures are sourced from?  In MB V2.1, they all came from fanart.tv and were of great quality.  But since updating to MB V2.2, they quality of the artist photos is not very good ... and they're less flattering.  Can I change a setting on my MusicBee so that that artist photos for my theater mode come from fanart.tv?

Try ... navigate to ... Preferences > Tags(2) > "auto-tagging" ... "artwork:" then click on the [...] to the right to change order and disable/enable providers. I don't believe it is possible to define your own providers like you can with the LyricsReloaded plugin tho.

No luck.  Cleared the artwork cache, disabled all but the fanart artwork sources, and then restarted MusicBee but it was pulling artist photos from elsewhere because none of the images displayed in the theater mode were on the artist pages on fanart.tv.  This issue only arose when I upgraded from Version 2.1 to 2.2 ... so that means it must be something in the MusicBee code, right?

To the best of my knowledge, the artwork settings in Tags (2) only affect album art, not artist photos.

the only change in v2.2 compared to v2.1 is that http://www.htbackdrops.org is also included - see the first post of this topic.
All the web sites used have very high quality pictures.
However if 'include flickr.com' is ticked in the Compact Player preferences, it can sometimes return lower quality and sometimes random pictures

It looks like the photos are all now coming from http://www.htbackdrops.org instead of http://fanart.tv.  And the photos from htbackdrops.org that MusicBee is choosing are all 720p (I have a 1080p screen).  When the photos came from fanart.tv, they were all 1080p.  Is there a way for me to remove htbackdrops.org as a source for artist photos for my computer?

for the next v2.2 update i have changed it so fanart.tv is given a higher priority than htbackdrops.
however i am not willing to include GUI changes so people can set the priority themselves due to lack of time/ benefit in doing this

Hello !
Is there a way to display artist pictures located in my own artist folders, in compact mode ?
I would like to not rely anymore on online galleries because, for some artists, they are not enough abundant, or simply don't provide any pictures (especially for underground artists).

I use to display LastFM gallery, but it is not available in compact mode, but anyway sometimes, LastFM galleries shuffle pictures for different artists with the same name, or display unrelated stuff... so in the end i thought that to use my own local pictures would be perfect.

i am sure fanart.tv, htbackdrops.org, theaudiodb.com would appreciate any high quality pictures you have to build up the collection and it then becomes available for everyone.
As to local artwork, MB already gives pictures in the Preferences/Tags(1)/artist folder preference. I think there would be some info on that in the wiki:

I'm wondering why the artist photo frame in the left panel is stuck in widescreen mode, shouldn't it adjust automatically to fit square images?

This is a cool feature indeed! The only thing I want is an option to "try next artist picture", in which case it would go to the next listed picture of the artist/band. That way if you don't like the default picture of the band, you can keep fetching a different image until you find one you like, and then once you got an image of the artist you like, it would save as the default photo for that band. Right now we're kinda forced to use the first picture of the artist that comes up. I guess there's a way to manually change it, but that seems needlessly complicated...or maybe it's not too hard, I don't know. Either way, a feature to try a different artist picture would be cool :) - maybe just a forward/back button to scroll through pictures of the artist/band.

Use the latest patch. It now retrieves 1200x1200 pics from the site.

Is there any way to use artist.jpg images in the album folders? I've also tried embedding my artist images and tagging them as "artist" but the artist view still uses its own pictures. I have spent so much time getting the artist images I wanted sorted and saved so it would be really nice to get to use them.

I have a Riff Cohen (https://fanart.tv/artist/bf0669ad-1088-47da-a538-7f7e3255bf69/cohen-riff/) album but MB isn't picking up the the artist thumb.
All tracks seems to have both Artist and Album Artist set as "Riff Cohen".

(a few minutes later) So I manually dropped that image in the correct place with the correct name with the rest of the album artist images. One restart later and it's shown properly.

Oh I see.

Is there any way the community here can set some standards on scanning quality and sizes and upload to a dropbox account or something to use as a database? I've no idea of the technicalities of what kinds of resources can be used. Just throwing it out there.

Is there a simple way to use Tag(2) - Tag Handling - Remove Words as a way to exclude "featured artists" included in the Artist Tag so that MB searches & finds Artist Pictures? I've tested on a couple of example such as remove "(ft Jay-Z)" and if works but I have far too many tracks to list them all manually. All my "featured artist" info is included in the Artist Tag but this results in MB not finding Artist Photos on tracks that have a featured artist. Alternatively, is there a way for the Artist Photo search to use the Album Artist tag as that contains just the Artist Name (except on compilations or soundtracks, but that is a minor inconvenience).

If you open Tag Editor and click on ... button next to artist tag box to open Multiple Artist Splitter, then clicking on Split button will split them into each artist value without touching display artist. But this can only be done one by one. If you want to bulk edit them, then you might want to ask boroda74 for writing a custom ASR preset for the job: http://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?topic=3833.0
