Title: quick poll: how many people use individual track rating?
Post by: Anti on December 26, 2011, 10:27:01 PM

As the title states, I'm interested in finding out if people generally bother with manually marking individual tracks with a rating.
A simple YES/NO response is fine, but if you want to explain how you use ratings that's fine too.

Thanks.

No, to be honest I haven't bothered much with ratings yet but I plan to in the near future...

Yes, but I only give 5 star ratings to songs I really like, and blank for anything else.

I never saw a real need for it.  Although after reading many threads about it (mostly here in the MB forums) I can see it's use, but not for me.  I like my music.  That's why I have the CDs and tracks that I have.  Yes, of course there are tracks that aren't as great as others, and that's what the "skip to next track" button is for.  And if -really- dislike a ripped track, I have a DELETE button.

True... it's just out of habit since I had iTunes before MB and the "love" button is for last.fm purposes.

Fair enough but I think "loving" your tracks would be safer considering it will be stored in the cloud and such (you can sync from last.fm if something happens). Just a thought, I don't mean to change your habits  :P

I have a huge library I am trying to work my way thru. On my ipod great tracks get 5 stars, good tracks get 4 stars, spelling  and misnames get 3 stars which indicates they require later adjustments. Tracks I want to delete from database get 1 star. Next time I sync those 1 stars are deleted. Unfortunately, of recent times,  my ratings won't sync back to the database. Don't know what the problem is but can't seem to make it work like it used to.

I forgot to include my own current behaviour:
No, I don't use the individual ratings, but recently went through my library adding album ratings.

Yes, I use individual track ratings. I've been using them since I met iTunes long long ago (about 5-6 years ago). My goal is to rate all my growing collection.
Besides, I use ratings to form playlists with 5-star ratings to listen in my portable player.

Never used any kind of rating. I never will either, they're useless to me and I'm glad that musicbee enables me to get rid (for the most part) of the clutter that rating buttons and such create.

Yes.  It's a great way of re-visiting music/artists you might have discovered were in your library, but didn't really know were there.  Especially if one has a gigantic library and can't remember every track name.  I often will be driving and listening to random music I've put on my iPod and will rate music on the road.

I run a micro-powered radio station in the remote area where I live and the ratings I have assigned are very useful.  I just started using MusicBee after ditching Songbird and had a a bit of bother transferring the ratings, a problem which I eventually solved.  Ratings are very useful to me as I like to create playlists which I can let play without having to skip over some tracks.  Most tracks I like get 3 stars, 4 occasionally, and 5 rarely.  I assign the ratings not as any judgement on what I regard as the track's intrinsic worth, just how often I'm guessing I want to hear it.  Some of my 2 star tracks I may regard as great pieces of music, I just don't want to hear them as often.  1 star tracks I don't really want to show up in playlists, but I may want them for reference purposes.

Ah, now that's an approach worth thinking about.
So does anyone make use of the 'selected by: highest rating' option in the autoplaylist 'restriction' settings?
Does it work well?

I do, it allows me to move stuff into different playlist from my ipod or anywhere. LIke one star sends to one playlist. 2 stars sends to two playlist.....

Yes, I am slowly rating every song in my 13,000 song collection.  I am currently only listenning to un-rated songs as I rate them as I listen to them.  I have discovered some old gems that I havent heard for ages that way.  Once evrything is rated, I can then only listen to the songs that I like.

Yes, i'm two months in the hard work of rating my best songs for easier finding and better playlists, and i am really proud of it. I use:
1 star - That song is an experiment of the artist
2 stars - Easy listening, no special feelings for that song
3 stars - a good song
4 stars - very good song
5 stars - Excellent

The 1 star playlist is strange, it gives an absurd mood.
The 2 stars are good for studying/concentrating in work.
The 2 and 3 are good for driving.
The 4 and 5 stars are good for improving mood and playing them at parties.

Explorer and WMP rates songs storing the value in the song AND in the library. So if we rate using MB there will be some delays until WMP realizes it.
I changed the setting of MB for using id3v3.2 instead of APE.

Yes, but usually in the 3-5 stars range only.
Where 3 is better than average, 4 almost top and 5 is absolutely fantastic.
I leave everything else unrated

This is what I have been doing for a while now, I never paid much attention to ratings before but when I started using it, it made a whole lot sense for me and adds a new dimension to the autoplaylist and all the different combinations that are possible.

I rate one cd at a time, start with the 1 star and work my way  up to 5

1 Star - Usually songs that I hate, automatic skip.
2 Stars - Songs that I don't like  but I don't get upset if I have to listen to it.
Obviously 1 and 2 are not considered anywhere in any playlist but I don't want to delete them since they are part of an official album (my OCD side)

3 Stars - Everything else that is not a 1 or 2, at this point should all be good songs.
4 Stars - Identify the top 3-4 songs as "Best of" (per CD), just like if I was creating a greatest hits compilation.
5 Stars - The masterpiece of the album, it's one of the 4 stars above that becomes a 5 stars. Although I have to admit that sometimes it is difficult. I usually ask myself the question if I had to listen to only 1 song on that album which one would it be... but sometimes I do have 2....

Also I use the grouping field to identify the rating. So for all 5 stars I indicate a "5" in the grouping field and so on. There is 2 purpose for that:
1) if for some reason my rating gets deleted or someone messes it up, I can identify/isolate the proper rating via that field.
2) if I need to use another program that does not recognise/support the rating system, I can also use that field to identify and reset my rating system in a matter of seconds.

I'm new to rating songs:  Can anyone enlighten me as to what exactly the "Love" rating does?  I assume it has something to do with last.fm (which I haven't used)
Title: Re: quick poll: how many people use individual track rating?

Yes, the tracks rated 'love' are synced with Last.FM when you connect to 'scrobble' tracks. The 'love' flag can also be used for rules, filters and sorting though, so it may have other uses depending on how you want to utilise it.

'Ban' is the other side to the love flag...

Tracks marked 'ban' will not be added (or will be skipped) in autoplaylists and autoDJ. As opposed to marking a track 1-star and then having to put in a rule in all the playlists/DJ not to play 1-stars, the ban feature is global and requires no rules.

You can also marked tracks to be banned only when the now playing list is shuffling. This is done in the edit -> settings dialogue.

The ban flag can also be used in rules, filters and sorting.

Banned tracks are listed in a section called 'exceptions' when creating a playlist.
To get a nicer list of banned tracks, you can create an autoplaylist using the rule: 'love field = banned'.

An easy way to ban tracks is to press shift when clicking the love icon on the player.

Yes I love ratings to help me to select a playlist.
I am song oriented, i can get an album and keep only 1 song.
songs i am not sure about i'm not giving any rating
if i think its ok I"ll give it 1 star, super likes I"ll  5 and then I try to be accurate with deciding something in between.
Since I am new with MB I am not sure yet how to go about the bomb sign
when playing random and I dislike something I"ll delete it on the spot or when I discover something good I rate it  right away if it was not yet.
So it is always a hobby in progress.
When I am in the mood to treat myself I select the 5 star rating songs and play only them randomly but not too often to avoid wearing out songs.
and then out of the blue it seems really interesting to play let's say 3 star songs.
I am also thinking of how I am going about to know what the latest songs are I aquired (some sort of counter?)
I like also to use the mood or occasion or such it becomes work at some point  ;D
For example I play guitar and like to pick out the songs easily which  I am working on or want to work on

The bomb sign means the track is 'banned.' All that means is it gets excluded from appearing in a shuffled playlist and whatnot.

Actually that is not the case. The bomb sign is for tracks that are rated as having 0 stars to differentiate between them and unrated tracks. The banned icon that you are talking about looks like this (/). It can be accessed by pressing the shift key and then clicking the icon on the players control panel or through Right-click/edit/settings section of that track.

I don't use 5 star ratings, for the same reason that YouTube ditched them, I was only really 5 starring the songs I really liked and one starring the ones I didn't, with maybe the occasional 4 star.

Instead I use the last.fm love button, which is one of the largest reasons I use MusicBee.

I'm giving tunes that is from: just OK up to good and nice, a three star rating. A four is a very good song and so on. A two-and-a-half is an OK tune but not so good that I wan't to call it good. I do this with ratings on IMDB too, e.g. a 5-star movie is a OK movie, nothing more nothing less.

I don't store anything in any cloud (paranoid maybe :o) and I keep everything  :-[. Over the years my music tastes have changed and songs I liked, I now don't and songs I didn't like I now love ;D So to keep track of the 30+k of songs I rate them and I use 1/2 stars as well (so effectively 1 to 10). As I listen to stuff I have changed my thinking on I change the rating. It takes a lot of work to get it sorted but once your there it is easy to maintain and finding some good stuff is easy.

Yes, I do.

It can help easily distinguish between versions of a song.  Plus, I'm weening off of Zune where you were able to sort songs within an album or within an artist for all their albums.  Then I could play them and not have to bother making a playlist or skip tracks I don't want to hear.
