Title: Disc burner
Post by: Steven on December 26, 2011, 12:49:59 PM
i've started looking at creating a disc burner in MB. What i have been able to acheive so far is:
- erase disc
- data disc burning
- audio-cd burning with 2 sec gap between tracks

what i am still looking at but cant get working:
- audio cd burning with no gap

what wont be supported:
- cd text writing (isnt supported by the Microsoft API i am using)

My question to people interested is do you think audio-cd burning with no gap is important or nice to have? (I guess its mainly relevant if you were burning a continous live album mix where the tracks run into each other)

Although it is supported by the Microsoft API, the documentation is sparse and the only example i found with it in use doesnt work either, so it may well be the case i wont be able to solve this one.

I would definitely be interested about no-gap audio cd  burning. It is not only about live album mixes I'm afraid. Many metal bands/artists  (Ayreon, Devin Townsend, Agalloch, Kalisia, Avantasia etc) have albums that try to tell a story and the tracks are a continuation of each other. In addition it is a common practice to have tracks that are linked together in a huge number of albums so I would be genuinely interested to have this feature. But only if it is possible, if not it's not the end of the world, but it would be nice to be able to do everything from within MusicBee :)

I agree with ma_t14.  It's a useful feature, but if it doesn't exist, there are other burners out there that can do this.

@Steven - why not introduce disc burning in MB without the 'no gap' option and as time permits see if you can get it working?  I'd certainly be willing to test it behind the scenes for you if that would help.

Do most standalone CD players actually play the music back as gapless though? From my limited experience, they still tend to pause whilst caching the song, so you end up with a gap (or at least a stutter) anyway.

I thought Audio CDs are and alway were all about gapless playback, are you sure?

I have some CD players that always have a gap. I think it is a more "advanced" feature. Personally, all I would be burning would be mix CD's for in the car, so gapless isn't important.

Steven,
Have you read this? - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa364889%28v=VS.85%29.aspx

thanks butty - yes i have seen that, but i think it applies to data discs.
There are another 2 different interfaces for Audio CDs. Its really annoying because i can get it to (appear to) write with no errors returning but the image is not finalised on the CD

good news with this - i finally managed to get it working with gapless audio cd's at the small negative that the cd has to be ejected for windows to recognise the burnt tracks (thats not required for other modes)
i still have to do the error handling, UI and various things so its still a few days off.

Great job Steven! I don't think anyone will mind the disc ejecting after it's finished burning the tracks. With some programs (ImgBurn, for example) it does that anyway after a disc is finished burning.

does anyone anticipate creating data discs and if so what sort of usage scenario do you see it for
eg. just as a library backup, or something more
the reason i ask is i was looking at what mediamonkey offers and it has all sorts of options for artwork handling, creating playlists based on artists, albums, specifying how files should be organised etc.
I dont plan to offer such extensive functionality (or at least not in the initial stages) but it would be helpful to know if people see any purpose to it.

In my mind most people would be burning audio cd's or maybe mp3 cd's

I dont need to burn CDs at all, but if I will burn them in future then only for backup purposes.

CD's seem like a highly inefficient way to back up a music library. I think audio/mp3 cd's should suffice for most.

I meant data CDs/DVDs, not the audio CDs.,

In that case, the app is going to have to span disks.

Interesting... But I would like to know how widely is that format  supported outside of computers?

it will support creating data discs where everything is converted to MP3 (although i called it MP3 CD as thats whats it commonly known as)

Ma_t14, the disc player in my car will play MP3 CDs (physically it is a DVD).  So the format is available on more than just computers.  Also my home entertainment DVD will play MP3 DVDs.

anyone interested to try out the disc burner, its now ready:
http://www.mediafire.com/?k87j7ttbmsjsria

as mentioned before XP is not supported, although i might consider a subset of functionality (audio cd only, with 2 sec gap) and MP3 cd. I have only tested this on Win7, but i am not expecting Vista to behave any differently

Its accessed from Tools/ Burn Disc where files or playlists can be dragged into the panel
or right click on a playlist in the left panel/ Burn Playlist to Disc

Just burned an audio cd and it seems to be working as expected. Just some of observations:

* It doesn't seem possible to remove files once you add them to the list of files to be burned. You can uncheck them but deleting them is not possible.
* I really liked the idea that you can just drag and drop files, makes things so much easier. But to take better advantage of this I think it would be better to able to dock the burner window in the same way it is possible with the tag editor.
* Burning at low speeds doesn't seem possible like 1x, 2x, 4x etc. Not going to use it myself I know some people tend to use such low speeds for serious work when they want a "perfect" copy.

Other than these 3 things I found the new burning functionality really good and sufficient for my  needs at this point. I will come back to you if I find anything else worth reporting...

the speeds shown are the ones actually supported by the drive/media as reported by the Microsoft API - i think other apps show a pre-defined list of speeds but that doesnt necessarily mean its the actual recording speed they use.

i would also be interested if someone could confirm that MP3 CD option is working with the player they use

Another observation, after I burned the audio cd it seems that the tags of the tracks are missing. I am not that familiar with  burning audio cds so maybe its a limitation I am not aware of..  ::)

Thanks a lot for implementing this 8)

I'll check it out as soon as I have access to my PC with Windows 7 (I'm running my friend's laptop with WinXP at the moment).

the drive/media needs to support CD text, otherwise audio CDs dont store tags. But the API i am using doesnt provide a clear documented way to write CD text.
However the usual way for software players to get tags is from freedb by matching a calculated disc id - in a custom burnt disc it wouldnt match to anything useful.

Nicely done, Steven.

I just burned 37 mp3 tracks to a DVD-RW and they play in my car's disc player.

What I did find interesting is that MusicBee doesn't see the tracks (via the left-panel computer tree and drive letter) if I insert the disc while MB is open.  If MB is closed and then reopened (while the disc is still in the computer's disc drive) MB sees the tracks with no problem once I drill down to the drive on the tree.

Does the programm recognize that i have a 800 MB CD in the drive?
The CD should support 90 minutes music.

for reasons unknown to me the microsoft API returns an error when retrieving the disc space for non-blank audio CDs. However once the CD is erased ithe size can be retrieved and the discs required estimate is accurate. So you could find if you actually proceed with the burn that it works with just one CD

apparantly it means that the disc media is not supported by the drive for burning
i wont be able to help you with this but google is your friend here.

also try erasing the disc using windows disc eraser and then burning with the lowest burn speed
but there are a lot of google matches on that error code

Just used MB for burning for the first time. Worked great! Only trouble is I can't burn albums longer than 74 minutes despite my blanks capable of holding 80 minutes. Are you looking into getting MB to get passed this? Maybe have the user tell MB how big the blank is if it can't read it itself?

Steven, new user from Denmark here... And oh boy do I love your SW... Since installing it yesterday I only slept 4 hours and updated my 10,000 songs, audio-books and podcasts from lousy IT. Great! When my wage comes I'll send you couple of bucks, have Paypal too. This is best free SW I've seen in years!
O/T or rather ON Topic - it's the burning we discuss here, right? - I'd like to send a gift w. 500 mp3 songs to a friend in cancer ward. When I try to burn it stopped at 108 files / 651546 k. My DVD is DVD+R / 4.7 GB, so the 500 songs / 3.1 GB should fit... I tried and tried, still MB asks for 5 discs. Is there a way I can fool the recorder/burner?

Hello, Just discovered Musicbee yesterday, it's what my wife has been looking for to get rid of the crap that comes with windows 10 !

I have it installed and set up the way she wants but have a question about burning a data CD.

We just burnt a Data CD no problem, but when I played it in her car to test it, the volume is very low. Songs all play at normal volume on her computer and I do not have any of the volume leveling things turned on that I know about.

I did download and install the Mame codec.

The volume on herr car radio goes up to 50 and I have to have it at 32 or higher in order to hear it.

Is there anything I can check or change to have the volume of the tracks higher (normal)?

Thanks, love the program so far !!!
