Title: How to add a screenshot to a post
Post by: cartman005 on July 22, 2011, 08:30:19 PM
To add an image to a post:
1. Create the image by taking a screenshot with the PrtScn button and paste the image into an application such as Paint. Save the image. Alternatively, you can use another application such as Windows Snip to create the image.

2. Crop the image to show what you want to display and possibly add markings to highlight certain areas. You can use Paint for this.

3. Upload the image to an image hosting site such as MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/) or ImageShack (http://imageshack.us/). These are both free image hosting sites.

4. Get the direct link to the image and copy it. This link cannot be a page which has the image on it, but must be the actual address of the page. It should end in .jpg, .bmp, or .png if it is the address of the image, such as http://www.example.com/screenshot.jpg.

5. In the post that you want to add the image to, you can simply paste the link and post it. Example:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/Windows_7.png

(Advanced) To make the image actually appear in the post.
6. Surround the direct link with the tags
Code
[img] [/img]
to make the actual image appear. It should look like:
Code
[img]http://www.example.com/screenshot.jpg[/img]

Example:

7. You can make the image link somewhere by adding the
Code
[url=http://www.example.com/link]
tags. So the full link would look like
Code
[url=http://www.example.com/link][img]http://www.example.com/screenshot.jpg[/img][/url]

Example:

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/Windows_7.png) (http://wikipedia.org/windows_7)

8. Now, you can center your image by adding the
Code
[center] [/center]
tags around the link.

Example:

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/Windows_7.png) (http://wikipedia.org/windows_7)

9. Finally, you can resize the image so it doesn't take up the whole page by adding 'width=' or 'height=' in the img tag, so it would look like
Code
[center][url=http://www.example.com/link][img width=200]http://www.example.com/screenshot.jpg[/img][/url][/center]

Example:

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/Windows_7.png) (http://wikipedia.org/windows_7)

So, as you can see, it can get complicated. But of course, the final steps are not entirely necessary.

For additional tags, please see this (https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode) page. I am not sure if they are all implemented here.

Might be worth mentioning that you need to paste somewhere after pressing print screen as nothing really seems happens when you press it, it doesn't 'create the image' as point one suggests.

Good tutorial aside from that.

cartman005, I think 'share' option of MediaFire should be mentioned. Its not very obvious that MediaFire can provide direct links to images.

http://imgur.com/ is my preferred choice of image host. This is a good guide and I'd never used some of the tags such as width/hight settings which is handy :)

+1 for imgur.com

I hate the way imageshack has gone with the "domain unregistered" bullshit (btw does anyone know how to solve this  ???)

If you are on windows there is a great tool for Imgur called Imgur Uploader. It automates the whole upload process by adding an option to the "Send To" menu. If you wish it can also add the appropriate bb code for you and you have different options for thumbnails, full size etc

Extremely useful tool when uploading screenshots here or other forums

There is just a problem :
When you want to send a link without the http// thing but like that :
MusicBee (http://getmusicbee.com/), nobody knows (except if you put your mouse on it)
that's an hyper text.
Let's try :
MusicBee (http://getmusicbee.com/)
So we can define that blue colour in texts are hyper texts.

Cheers.

The website snag.gy will allow you to paste your print screen capture directly into the browser, and do some simple editing if desired.  The result seems to come out a little fuzzy, though, so if you need a high res image it might not be a good solution.

Here's a free program for Windows and OS X that can capture an area of your screen directly to an animated GIF: -

http://www.cockos.com/licecap/

It gives you a resizable frame. You can drag the frame to the size and position you want, set the frame rate of the GIF, then hit record, choose a name for your GIF and where to save it. There will then be a couple of seconds of pre-roll and it will start to record, capturing everything that happens within the frame. You can move the frame around the screen while it's recording. Once you're done, hit stop, then your GIF is ready to upload.

It's very handy for demonstrating bugs that occur when you perform certain actions, or for explaining to another user how to do something.

An example GIF created with it: -

The Snipping Tool which is part of Windows 7/8 is more flexible than a full screenshot, and you can annotate.
If you want to do a little more editing, I like Duck Capture (http://www.ducklink.com/p/free-screen-capture-tool/) (Mac and Win).

Also, once the image is uploaded to imgur, and you have the link, I use the BBCodeExtra (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bbcodextra/) Firefox add-on to insert it into the forums.
It's handy for formatting most posts that you write rather than type the bbcode everytime.

Note you can upload a large image, but restrict its size using bbcode (so it doesn't break out of the forum):
(img) link.goes.here width=600 (/img)
If users want to view the full size image, they can right-click -> view image.

Might be worth mentioning that you need to paste somewhere after pressing print screen as nothing really seems happens when you press it, it doesn't 'create the image' as point one suggests.

On Windows 8 (maybe Windows 7 too) you can press "WinKey + Print Screen" and it will create a PNG of your screenshot in
C:\Users\%userprofile%\Pictures\Screenshots

I think there is a small mistake in step No. 4.

You wrote:
4. Get the direct link to the image and copy it. This link cannot be a page which has the image on it, but must be the actual address of the page.

Shouldn't it be?

Hi Sigma, I'm Sorry if I'm going against the rules. I am a Newbie here. You posted a photo of the main section of the program. It has the thumbnail pictures of your albums. Can you explain to me.....or send me a PM How to set my preferences to make my screen look like this. Again, Sorry for asking this question in this section. I looked and looked and can Not figure out how to do this. Thanks, Harold.

Here's a free program for Windows and OS X that can capture an area of your screen directly to an animated GIF:

http://www.cockos.com/licecap/

It gives you a resizable frame. You can drag the frame to the size and position you want, set the frame rate of the GIF, then hit record, choose a name for your GIF and where to save it. There will then be a couple of seconds of pre-roll and it will start to record, capturing everything that happens within the frame. You can move the frame around the screen while it's recording. Once you're done, hit stop, then your GIF is ready to upload. It's very handy for demonstrating bugs that occur when you perform certain actions, or for explaining to another user how to do something.

In addition to Licecap, here are two other freeware animated GIF creators I have used and can recommend:

GifCam  http://blog.bahraniapps.com/gifcam/ (http://blog.bahraniapps.com/gifcam/)

Very simple and intutive but with the full range of important options (color depth, FPS choice, etc) including editing.  It can be set to use RAM only or a specified temp folder for memory.  Be sure you get it from the author's site not 3rd parties.  Portable install, leaves no registry entries/external files.

ScreenToGif  http://www.screentogif.com/ (http://www.screentogif.com/)

Good but much "busier" than GifCam or Licecap, can also be setup to grab video using optional ffmepg, huge amount of edit options, a bit "overkill" but take a look at it.  There is a portable install option that afterwards in settings can be used to move the otherwise external ini file into its own folder, leaves an empty folder though in your Temp even when deleting the "project file", settings show warning about insufficient space in Temp even though there's plenty (in current 2.12.1 version) (Note: changelog for new 2.13 version now says "The warning that appears when there's not enough space left on disk will only be displayed when there's less than 2GB left"--not yet verified).  Adds two registry keys.

The thing I don't like about Licecap (in Sigma's post) is that once you hit "record", instead of immediately beginning the grab it takes you first to a dialog where you choose the saved file name/directory, THEN starts, so not great for catching something that's ongoing "at the chosen moment."  Other than that, it also is portable if you extract the install file (7-Zip is your friend) into a folder and create a blank "licecap.ini" file within prior to start.  No registry entries.

3. Upload the image to an image hosting site such as MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/) or ImageShack (http://imageshack.us/). These are both free image hosting sites.

I will never use Imageshack again after in 2014 finding many of my Imageshack images on forums started to go missing. On request, the provider restored some but then told me "the images we have been trying to restore have been lost" (see below) and never answered my subsequent requests.

Quote
Dear Chris,

It is with great displeasure and regret that I have to inform you that the images we have been trying to restore have been lost. We did all that we could to restore the images, but unfortunately with no success. At ImageShack we understand the importance and sentimental value an image can hold. We are truly sorry for our mistake and your loss.

The images that were lost were uploaded a number of years ago, before we had implemented our new image back up procedures. We now store 3 backed up copies of every image uploaded in an effort to prevent any further image loss.

Best regards,
Veronika

Instead, I'm using Imgur.com.

Strangely enough discord links that contain an image are valid when used with the forum's IMG tags. I have a private server for personal use and I just upload the images in a random useless channel.

This one is easy and no "enrolling":

1.  Take a screenshot of what you want others to see;  you can use the built-in Windows "Snipping Tool", Irfanview's Options/Capture Screenshot, or a zillion other apps.

2.  Go to https://imgur.com/upload (https://imgur.com/upload)

3.  Browse to or drag image, upload

4.  When image appears on the site, you can either:

  a)  Right-click it and choose "Copy link location" (dialog from Firefox context menu, your browser may differ);  this will give a link to the image file itself (ends in for example *.jpg).  You can then use the MusicBee forum's "Insert Image" dialog button and insert the link, which will embed the image itself in the post.

  b)  Or, click on the Imgur "Copy" button they provide there, which will produce a no-extension link you can insert into a post using the "Insert Hyperlink" button.  This provides a LINK to the image in your post instead of embedding it as in a), which is preferable if you want to use a huge image that otherwise would take up too much real estate in the forum, which can be annoying.

Be sure you check your post first using "Preview" to be sure it's what you want before hitting "Post" (note the difference between using "Insert Image" and "Insert HyperLink").

Other sites/methods abound, but as I said, this is the one that works easiest for me.

@sveakul...

Since this question gets asked frequently, I'd like to suggest you add it to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. While not truly a tip or a trick for working with MB, many people would find it faster (I hope) that where it's currently buried. A simple cut and paste from here to the new piece would be sufficient. And if you can't make it sticky, please let me know and I will. I will also lock it as that sub-forum is "no questions please."

Since there are a few similar threads in Tips & Tricks, maybe call yours "Posting Screenshots - The Easy Way" (Just a suggestion.)

And while the question is truly a FAQ, the website FAQ really deals -only- with questions relating to MB.

Thanks.

I see the advanced option of "Surround the direct link with the tags Code " currently does not seem to be working (to make the graphic display on the page rather than the link).

Sorry if I have missed something in this post, but is there a workaround for this?

Working fine here.  Be sure you select the "Insert Image" button (not "Insert Hyperlink" or "Insert Code") from the post options, and in the "Enter Image URL" box that appears be sure the link you post there is the complete URL to the image itself, .i.e. ending in an image extension, like "https://i.imgur.com/HFRCNx1.png"
