Title: Columns in Expanded (Album) View
Post by: phred on August 04, 2022, 07:36:49 PM
Using 3.5.8251 P

I don't know if something has changed in a recent patch update or I've changed something.

Previously when viewing an album in the expanded view I would get two columns. Now no matter how wide or narrow I have the main panel, MB only displays one column. There's plenty of room for a second column. I (think I) looked at every setting under the expanded view settings but I see nothing for columns.

Ideas?

Any chance you were playing around with this new panel setting and forgot to change it back?

Most probably. <sigh>
But I can't find the setting now. Want to give me a clue as to where it is?

Has the option shown in Zak's screen shot been removed? He implied that it's a new panel setting.

Again - no matter how wide or narrow I make the main panel, tracks are always listed in one column only.

It's in the Album Covers Customise Panel... settings when you click the Show Settings button:

You have to scroll down to see it below the displayed fields.

DAMN DAMN DAMN
I didn't even notice the scrollbar.
It was not enabled, but now it is, and set for two columns, but I'm still only getting one.

Steven said he's tweaking the column width handling but that he'll fine tune it some more. Since I find it not to be generating the expected results, it needs some major fine tuning. :-(

This works if I remove the left sidebar, (Artist Bio) or run MB in full screen. Neither of which I want to do.

I rolled back to 3.5.8249 and it's giving me the two columns I've had previously.

For the record, I have "restrict number of columns displayed" set to 2. When I disabled it to test the current patch (.8252) I still only had one column. But had two columns with it disabled or enabled on .8249.

Thanks.

This is acceptable, but still not as good as it was in .8249. In order to make the main panel show two columns, I had to reduce the width of the three side panels (left sidebar: navigator, artwork; left main panel: artist bio; right sidebar: visualizer volume, track info 1 & 2 stacked, lyrics.)

Was there a particular reason you make changes to this?

Thanks

With 3.5.8253 P and not doing anything with the size of the MB window or panels, the initial issue is back. All I've done was close MB and reboot Windows. Which makes no sense as to how or why that would revert the behavior back to one column. Some albums are one column and some are two. But -all- are two columns when using 3.5.8249, which is what I would prefer and expect.

These two are with 3.5.8253 P...

Going back to 3.5.8249 P solves the problem...

the newer versions differ from older ones in that it now adapts the column layout to the width of the data being displayed.
This is now comparable to earlier versions as long as the track title/ artist being displayed isnt too wide

Personally I'd rather have two columns even if it truncated longer track titles or artists. This new method creates lots of wasted space.

.8249

Since it appears that no one else raised an issue with this, nor has anyone else weighed in on this thread, is there any chance of going back to the previous display method?

The issue is for people with classical music or other cases where the titles are very long.
What i will do is change the behaviour of the new 'restrict columns setting' to prefer that setting when enabled, so if you choose 2, it will use 2 columns of narrower width, rather than adapting to the displayed text width

That sounds like a great solution. Thank you Steven.

YEA!!! My columns are back and my panels are resized to where they were previously.

Thanks for the creative solution, Steven.

The issue is for people with classical music or other cases where the titles are very long.
Confirming that the change seems a big improvement for classical music with long titles.

What I do notice though, is that when the titles are not that long, but the 'track artists' vary from the 'album artist', the column count is also reduced (usually to 1) to accommodate for showing all track artists too.
And those don't concern me much for that view.

But please just take this as an impulsive observation.
There's a good chance it is a rare occurrence, and/or it can be resolved using some virtual tag for the expanded panel.
