Title: Windows 11/ update KB5013943 causes MusicBee to no longer run
Post by: Steven on May 12, 2022, 11:00:49 PM
Any windows 11 users, applying update KB5013943 causes MusicBee to fail to start.
For myself I uninstalled that update.
I gather its something to do with the update removing .NET 3.5, so you could also re-install .NET 3.5
I don't know why that would affect MusicBee as its been using .NET4.6.1 for ages and recently .NET4.8

For some reason, musicbee stopped working on my laptop.
It just does not start at all.
Also, have it on PC with the same Windows 11 (both updated with the latest Windows updates), and on PC it works perfectly fine.
Tried to update it with the latest MusicBee35_Patched.zip and MusicBee36_Patched.zip but it shows the following message and after Run anyway it does not start.

Like something is missing from my laptop but can't figure out what's wrong.
Is there some debug file/mode I can see what's wrong?
Here is config file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
  <startup>
    <supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.8"/>
  </startup>
  <appSettings>
    <add key="EnableWindowsFormsHighDpiAutoResizing" value="true"/>
  </appSettings>
  <runtime>
    <loadFromRemoteSources enabled="true"/>
    <AppContextSwitchOverrides value="Switch.System.IO.BlockLongPaths=false;Switch.System.Net.DontEnableSchUseStrongCrypto=true"/>
  </runtime>
  <system.net>
    <settings>
      <httpWebRequest useUnsafeHeaderParsing="true"/>
    </settings>
  </system.net>
</configuration>

Thank you.

Windows Defendier is blocking MB from running. Simply white-list MusicBee.exe (and the entire folder where it's installed) to Defender.

Hmmm ... I have no further suggestions, but hopefully someone will.

After whitelisting did you reinstall MusicBee? It had happened to me that Defender had deleted  the MusicBee.exe file. That's why it wouldn't start.

I don't use Defender, but I would think the user wouldn't be able to browse to the exe to whitelist it if it didn't exist. And it clearly exists in the whitelist, based on the screenshot.

Yes, tried to reinstall but no luck.
BTW Defender never deleted the exe file, it just can't start,
A few days ago had some issues with visual cc libs with another program but repaired them and solved the problem with that.
Maybe that is what affects the music bee but not sure.

I assume that you have no other security software running that may be preventing MusicBee running, or has quaratined any MusicBee files?

It might also be interesting to see if the portable version works (if you do try this, advise 'installing' into C:\MusicBee\ folder or similar)

To add to this, you can have both Installer and Portable versions installed at the same time. Just make sure Portable lives in a different folder than the Installer. As as tjinc stated, make sure Portable is in a folder outside of Windows control, i.e.\users or \program files, etc.

Tried portable at a non-system partition, can't start that either.
There must be something messed up with Microsoft Visual CC libs on this laptop since on other machines it works just fine.
Or maybe it's due to its AMD cpu, all others are Intel.

Are the error messages or issues the same when attempting to open the portable version?

Defender is getting stubborn with every new update. If MusicBee's binary isn't digitally signed, smarscreen will block it. If I had to chose between the two, I'll chose Musicbee and dump smartscreen.
