I have defined a custom sort that is Album Rating (Descending) followed by Album Artist (Ascending). When I view the results they are sorted by descending rating but within that rating the Album Artist is not being sorted in ascending order and appear to be random. What am i missing? All Album Artist fields are populated.

You will need to include a screenshot of what you're seeing, unless someone can guess better than me.
Also - as per this thread - make sure you're applying the custom sorting, not just defining it:

Can't really include a screen shot as I would need to be able to scroll multiple pages. My speculation is that Album Rating is actually some number vs the star rating that is being displayed. So I see:
David Lindley 5 stars
Lenka 5 stars
Various artists 4.5 stars
Bodeans 4.5 stars
Asa 4.5 stars
Macy Gray 4.5 stars
Dire Straits 4.5
Etc.
It would appear that sorting by album rating is sorting by the calculated number rather than the star rating?
