Title: What happens when Steven dies?
Post by: imminiman on August 12, 2021, 02:42:35 PM
I love MusicBee so much, and I wouldn't want it to die with Steven.

I doubt he'll be taking your copy with him.

Sure.

What about keeping MusicBee from dying when future Windows updates don't support MusicBee anymore?

What I'm asking essentially is, will there be someone with access to the code so they can keep updating it?

The internet-enabled dead man's switch built into MusicBee will be activated, and it will stop working.

This is why I have copied my music library onto 7,858 CDs.

Perhaps the rude, egoistic and insensitive manner you brought this up is the reason for the replies you are getting.

Any question that starts with "So, when you die..." is a strange question to ask someone you don't know personally, and probably a strange question to ask someone you do.

The short answer is that no one except Steven knows. To my knowledge it's never been addressed.

It could be asked of any software project with a single developer.
It's possible some provision exists for the source code to be released in such an event, but let's hope we never have to find out.

I demand each forum member post our estate plans.  I will go last.
What is your contingency plan in case you die tomorrow?
Is somebody else going to share your estate plan with us then?
I'm sorry, but you'll understand that the forum deserves some assurances about this.

Sorry, but I'm taking MB with me. You'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

In the event of my death I will attempt to Wifi Sync but I'm anticipating firewall issues.

That's pretty funny. You could always use a USB cable, but I think the maximum length is about 33 feet. If you decide to try, please let us know how if it worked.

USB cables will melt where frankz is going.

Ahhh! Hence the firewall issue he mentioned with WiFi.

And all they play there is Rick Astley.
The same song, over and over again.
I am wondering what he needs a music manager for.

Yeah I know it's egoistic of me to ask this question and I could've worded it better, and maybe it would have been a little less weird and insensitive, but it would probably still be I guess. I am sorry for this. if you want and can, delete this thread.

No harm done.
Let's all just leave it at this, and wait what Steven wants to do with this thread?

While I admit  the thread started off very weird, it took a nice humorous turn and I wouldn't delete it.

I'll long be waiting for him in "heaven" to chat up his afterlife version 1.0 -for one: Many other things are likely to happen -here, there, and elsewhere.

Shouldn't this be moved to the Beyond Musicbee forum??

I would have asked what is the future of MB when/if Steven no longer has the time to support it or if sadly something happens to him.

Whether you think it is in *good taste* to bring the subject up has nothing to do with it's relevance. Nor does it disrespect Steven. MB is the best I have found & those of us who are enthusiastic about it, would like to see it continue far into the future. I cannot count how many wonderful & unique software projects just like this have died due to un-forseen life circumstances by the original developer(s).

Not sure I'd want to use it.
Could be too much harp (or maybe fiddle) music for my taste.

There is no such thing.
It all depends on how much you believe  :P

Oh, I took that as tongue in cheek...
Me too. Very much so  :D

Not a very decent question & pointless on top of that: "I work as an IT project manager, but I don't get to do any hands-on development anymore. As I enjoy software programming as one of my hobbies, I have created a music manager and player application which I've made it available for personal use." Steven Mayall on CNET. MB is discontinued (last update more than 5 month ago). As an audiophile I prefer the clearly better sounding AIMP witch also works more reliable in combination with JPlay and Fidelizer.

Welcome to the forum zupp.
It's a pity your introductory post contains two incorrect statements.

MusicBee is not 'discontinued' but still under continuous development.
The latest patch update even dates from yesterday.

MusicBee does not 'sound worse than Aimp'.
MusicBee is capable of bit-perfect playback (which is as good as it gets), and I am guessing Aimp is too.
So if you observe differences in sound quality, you probably have misconfigured one of them, or have set them playing at different volumes, or have some audio processing in the audio path.

Hi "Hero Members"! Thousands of Posts! Great. Lots of daytime leisure, eh? Let me guess. Cheap equipment, general technical incomprehension, low education but putting on thick pants.
I only quoted the developer in his own words: https://download.cnet.com/developer/steven-mayall/i-10056453/ Should be nothing bad with that. And then: https://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?board=6.0 Release 3_4_7805 from MAY 15, 2021, 10:06:46 AM. The last one til today. A sinking ship full of believers - have a nice drowning...

Don't drink and type?
Well, I hope you are drunk, else you've shared a severe lack of digital skills, and some serious mental issues.
Please continue in 'Beyond MusicBee' if you desire some support on that.
We are here to help.

In case anyone who is not zupp takes this seriously, look at the history of that board. It's not uncommon to have 6+ months between official releases. The beta is in steady production, see the links in phred's and my signatures. Also check Steven's posts, which are full of updates: https://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;u=1

Patches usually contain bug fixes and/or feature improvements and/or new features. There is no published list for the patches.
You can always find the latest patch via the signature in my and psychoadept's posts.
