Post by: urfausto on November 24, 2019, 11:47:23 AM

Have you tried reaching either of them via a web browser?

you mean as a web address? this yes and they are unreacheable. i think there is a major problem here not depending on me personally.

i was also reading that MBz dropped its support to it: https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/History:FreeDB_Gateway
(The MusicBrainz to FreeDB gateway (mb2freedb) was a service that allowed FreeDB clients to access MusicBrainz data through the FreeDB protocol. It was removed in 2019, and the following content is for historical interest only.)

My freedb link is not working, but I've rarely used it anyway.

It appears that the problem is freedb and not MB.

ok thanks for the feedback. in this case do u completely skip identification through freedb? i thought it was a good db for metadata, but i'm no expert about. MBz and Discogs is enough?

What is "enough" is for the user to decide. You can skip using freedb if you're not getting the results you expect or if it's not working. If the others are working, or working better, then use them.

Maybe freedb has a user forum, or a 'contact us' link on their site and you can ask them what's going on.

yeah, personally never had the chance to try out freedb specifically (i use cue tools but im not 100% sure it connects to it to get the metadata) so I can't even give an opinion or decide about it.

unfortunately there is nothing like a forum or an helpdesk assistance about freedb. no recent posts around about troubleshooting either. just found those 2 addresses in a really old internet thread. so there is no way to check how things are at current day.

no, if you look at the info inside the link you will see there is an overall issue with fetching data from their db:

Album Requests - Last month (2019-10-01 - 2019-10-31)
Album Request
No information found.

As stated previously, the problem is on freedb's side and there's nothing MB can do about it. You need to select a different source.

i've searched far and wide the internet and found no post discussing this issue, you would not mind if bring it up do you. it's weird though that there is no news by the official team eaither.

I've just found out that freedb is working inside TagScanner (https://www.xdlab.ru/en/). That application is awesome by the way, I will side it with MB so I can totally avoid Picard.

Seems to be a new addition, I'm pretty sure it wasn't there when this conversation started.

Even if FreeDB.org state itself to be down, Foobar can search and find results with these values:

server: freedb.freedb.org
port: 80
address: /~cddb/cddb.cgi

However MB doesn't perform any search with freedb.freedb.org

Is there a way these values can help to reach from MB?

Thank you!
