Title: Website Issues (Internal Server Error)
Post by: Steven on March 21, 2019, 10:48:03 PM
This has been an on-going thing for a long time but it seems to me its got very much worse of late, to the point where the forum is almost unusable. I have reported it to the website hosting company but based on past experience I am not hopeful they will help.

I am afraid I dont know what more I can do about this and it is quite a negative for me to have to deal with this along with the other stresses, and its a negative for people trying to use the forum. If it doesnt improve by itself in the next few days, I might have to call it a day.

The increase in the number of appearances started for me about a week ago. When it appears, I have to 'refresh' about 4-6 times before the page loads correctly.

Is there another hosting service that might be more reliable?

Ditto here to what phred described--started getting more noticeable about a week ago, but today is particularly bad.  Hopefully it's a "reverse peak" and whatever the hosting service is screwing up is affecting ALL customers to the extent that they may get serious about fixing it.

It's bad in the last day or two, but we don't seem to have suffered a lack of posts because of it.  Couple of refreshes and it's fine for the most part. Please don't let it get to you or cause you stress - we're fine out here.

FWIW I've always had good luck with HostGator, but I'm sure any site I've ever run had infinitesimal traffic compared to this.

What would need to happen to improve it? A new hosting company? I am willing to help out however I can.

@Steven... no need to answer this if you don't want to... how much is the monthly cost for your web host? How much would a new (hopefully better) cost? I'm thinking we can chip in and set things going smoothly again.

To move to dedicated hosting would cost $100+ per month so its quite a lot.
Also moving to a different host isnt just a case of choosing another - there is the actual migration that would need to be planned for and executed, with the associated risks of things going wrong.

Unfortunately I'm more than familiar with the "if something can go wrong, it will go wrong" theory.

I am investigating upgrading to a new plan priced at $50 per month which I think can be covered by donations I receive.

Happy to make small donation(s) but don't really want PayPal connected to my account - any other payment methods available?
Regards: Freddy

It has been an issue on and off for a while but does indeed seem to have spiked recently. As someone (phred maybe, can't be arsed to scroll up) said though, multi-refreshes will usually fix it and I imagine most of us are okay with this situation. Will chuck in a donation later this month to help cover the costs for any new plan.

for less than 50$ per month there are lots of other good hosting solution. I looked up Lunarpages cloud hosting plan and they are pretty expensive compared to the competition.
Also their customer service is less than stellar.

I am using Hostinger(domain and email) for my own personal domain. and their customer service is pretty good. Also they have really amazing sales.

To move to dedicated hosting would cost $100+ per month so its quite a lot.

I don't think dedicated server is needed. I would suggest moving to different hosting provider though.
We can test out the website move and if everything goes well we can migrate the data then. It will take some planning but it might be worth it.

Lunarpage's plans looks ridiculously expensive.  The startup plan(cloud hosting) of hostinger is 25$(without any discount) which provide the same cpu core and more ram than lunarpages  :-\

I have proceeded with the scalable cloud plan and should be migrated in the next couple of days. I will let you know when i have been advised the migration has started - I suspect we may lose new forum posts that are done during that migration period.

The new server is now active.
As mentioned, all posts since yesterday afternoon UK time have been lost.

WOW! That was pretty fast. Was it as painless for you as for us?

no, it wasnt a completely smooth migration but i think its there now

Sorry it wasn't as pain free as it appeared.

My initial impression is that all pages of the site are loading a million-gazillion times faster than before. And when in the forum, clicking on 'post' happens in a flash.

Thanks for doing this, Steven.

Wonderful! I agree, I can tell the difference already. If at some point you need support with the costs, let us know.

Yes please do! The donations should go to you for all the work you have invested & still invest into MB regularly and (hopefully not be eaten up by hosting fees for the community forum...).
Also, potentially unlikely, but if we, singular users/me/others (via pm) or the community at large, can help with 'the other stresses', please do let us know too!
Churs.

I am aware there is still an issue where some of you dont get email notifications. Its mostly gmail accounts and I am looking into it but the web-hosting support provided is really slow

It looks like the problem may be solved as I havent had any failure notifications today. If someone who has a gmail account and started recieving topic notifications could confirm, it would be appreciated

Hello Steven,

Some feedback.

No more website issues.  Quite a relief, yet renewing a page one or two times was enough for me (so 'doable').

Unfortunately:  still no notifications (with yes, a Gmail-account).
(Minor issue for me, as I have 'New replies to your posts' in my Favorites bar...)

Greetz! b.

Could someone with a gmail account confirm they are now getting notifications?
I havent received any bounced email for the last few days. Could you make sure you check your junk mail folder as well

I'm getting very slow response times from the website right now, sometimes returning Error 502-Bad Gateway.  Saw this about a day ago too only later in the evening.  Anyone else seeing this?  Internet, other sites, etc working fine.

Edit:  back to "snappy" now, can come and go.

Negative. I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary since Steven made the switch.

I got CloudFlare error 522 once. When checked with a server down checking site, it was down for everyone.

Occasionally it slows down, but most of the time it works fine for me.

I now get a daily summary report of messages sent to gmail accounts and according to that report 9 messages to gmail accounts were sucessfully sent but 1 sent from a gmail server ip address (ie. not directly sent from the getmusicbee.com mail server) using getmusicbee.com as its sender failed verification and was blocked. I dont know if that 1 was yours and somehow different to the others due to some config you have or if it was from a spammer sending a message to a gmail account and faking the sender as getmusicbee.com.
I dont want to spend more time on this - i have already wasted too much time and i am not expert enough on this to be able to solve it.
I suggest using a different non-gmail email account if it continuously does work and its important to you

Things have been fine (speedy!) with the website here since my last post, so probably just a timing fluke.

Website seems to work fine and fast.
@Steven are you able to go into the admin page in the dashboard now? in the previous server it was crashing.

Often notifications landed in spam folder of my gmail account. Using a filter helped:

I got CloudFlare error 522 once.

Got this error again and couldn't access the site for a while. Later it was resolved.
