Title: Music genealogy - genre/subgenre visualizations
Post by: alec.tron on May 15, 2017, 10:19:16 AM
Hai.
There's a few interesting approaches & resources, and since the genre & subgenre thread is still regularly frequented & open for discussion at MB to some extend I believe, might be good to share a few resources.
Also because they are super interesting ;)

Great project & well thought out for Pop / 20st century music (less great for Classic, Folk & World music unfortunately - but maybe that will come too)

And a few mostly text-y things:

If you have others, sing out & post them!
I've been looking for a while for something focusing on world and/or folk music, but no luck so far...

Churs.

Also interesting & missed it somehow above:

http://everynoise.com

"This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1531 genres by Spotify. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier."

There's this: http://www.musicgenreslist.com/

And this: http://www.musicmap.info/#

And this: http://www.allmusic.com

...Which isn't technically a genre list, but the way that they catalog their genres is good for referencing.

And looks like Musicbrainz is finally making a move on their genre definitions as well:
https://blog.musicbrainz.org/2018/11/02/musicbrainz-introducing-genres/
https://github.com/metabrainz/musicbrainz-server/blob/master/entities.json#L666

Yet: "We are hoping to get a better coverage of genres (especially genres outside of the Western tradition, of which we have a very small amount right now)..."
