I've been trying for some time to get MB playlists (m3u) to sync with an android device. Whenever I run the sync, it appears to be successful but the playlists appear on the device as .pla files rather than .m3u files.
Some android music player apps seem to read these .pla files with no problem at all, and they will play the playlist (even though the file size appears to be 0.0 bytes) but other music player apps refuse to recognize the playlists at all.
I've tried every possible change of settings I can think of but I just can't figure out why the playlists are transferred as .pla files intead of m3u. (The m3u file type is selected in MB Library Settings).

You need to change the playlist type in your sync settings: http://musicbee.wikia.com/wiki/Devices#Settings

As far as I can tell, I already have the playlist type set as m3u. This is under the Preferences/Library tab.
I haven't seen any other setting for playlist type anywhere.

Please consult the link I gave you. The playlist settings for sync are not in the preferences dialogs.

It looks like this feature appears in version 3 but not in version 2.04 as I've been using. I have now updated to the latest MB and will give it a go.
Thanks.

No, you're looking in the wrong place.
Go to Preferences > Devices > (select device) > Configure > Settings > Playlist Storage > Save as format > (use drop-down to select format)

Yeah, that sounds like it would help. That version is several years old.
