Title: Discogs Tagger
Post by: Steven on July 20, 2014, 08:50:10 AM
This plugin replaces the native Discogs tagging functionality built into MusicBee. This is needed because of API changes made by Discogs

- create an account on discogs - www.discogs.com (http://www.discogs.com)

- get the discogs plugin - unzip and place in the Plugins sub-folder:
  https://getmusicbee.com/download/plugins/mb_Discogs.zip (https://getmusicbee.com/download/plugins/mb_Discogs.zip)

- when MusicBee is started, the plugin will open a discogs authorisation page in your default web browser - you need to have created a discogs account beforehand

- authorise MusicBee and copy the PIN number that is displayed and paste into the dialog window that MusicBee is displaying, and then hit Proceed

- The plugin should automatically be added to the Tag providers in the Tags(2) preferences page but you may want to change the priority settings

Downloaded today's patch (2.4.5314) and placed mb_Discogs.dll in the Plugins folder.  Launched MB and went to Preferences \ Plugins.  Clicked on CONFIGURE for the Discogs plugin and received this:

MusicBee v2.4.5314.29593 (Win6.1), 20 Jul 2014 14:56:

the only way i can see that happening is if you were not running 2.4.5314 so could you confirm using help/ about in musicbee ?
It should gave automatically popped up a dialog box to enter a PIN but again that depends on a change made in that MB version

edit:
i see it could also happen if you cancelled the PIN verification process and then restarted MB and did what you did. If you re-download the mb_discogs.dll plugin then that scenario should be addressed

2.4.5314 confirmed.
You can also see it in the error message I posted.
And I never even got to the PIN entry box.  MB immediately closed after clicking OK on the error message.

However, I downloaded the patch again, along with the plugin.  Overwrote existing with the newly downloaded and I got the PIN box.  All appears to be working okay now.

Thanks.

Hi all,

I've downloaded the plugin, installed and register it with no problems.

On tags(2)  i can see discogs enabled, but when i try to "Auto tag for album" it only discovers from MusicBrainz and FreeDb. I've tried many albums with no luck.

Any help?

Yes. 2.4.5322.

I don't know how, but it works now.. Didn't do anything. Only restarted computer after dinner. Before restart tried to close/open musicbee many times.

Well, I 've been testing this during last days. For me it founds info on Discogs randomly.

I use the expanded view from album layout, from here i right click the album picture and select "Auto Tag for album". The first time it finds correctly the album on Discogs, for example "M83 - Hurry, I'm dreaming".  If i cancel the tag, or apply tags, whatever; and try to auto tag it again it only show Musicbrainz or freeDB. If i keep triying it returns to show discogs info.

Could be  a time-out between checks on discogs api?

in my testing i have found discogs to be unreliable sometimes, only to start working again an hour or so later. As far as i am aware MB follows all the rules it stipulates eg. maximum of one request per second. I might approach them to see whats going on but dont hold your breath

Hi Steven,
It appears that the plugin is referencing the Style tag from the Discogs database, and suggesting it as 'Genre' in Musicbee.

One of the best things about Discogs is their use of genres and then sub styles.
Would it be possible to choose both Genre and Style in the Auto Tag fields?
I realise you don't have Style as a default tag (I have set it up as a custom tag), but this would make the Discogs plugin really useful.

you may not be doing anything wrong
Discogs has recently been having "network connectivity issues" while they were making changes to their API (again  ::)  )

these changes may also have affected this plugin as:
XML output is now deprecated
output is now in JSON
Title: Re: Discogs Tagger
Post by: Steven on September 11, 2014, 09:05:17 AM
the plugin is already using JSON and the latest API
Title: Re: Discogs Tagger

and the latest API

@ wavebave
Since Steven has already included the changes from Aug 15 and removed any old endpoints that Discogs turned off on Aug 22, then I'm at a loss to help more.  Hopefully other forum members that have this plugin currently working will have a better idea.

if i was to spend time looking at this i would need more information than "it doesnt work".
anyone having problems with it, could you say which steps you have done from the instructions in the first post and if any of the steps failed describe what happened. If the steps were all done, and you dont get any results from discogs then confirm the plugin is enabled in the plugin preferences and if so then give an example of an artist and album you tried

current musicbee version: 2.4.5349
artist/album i tried: american football, american football (same album as artist)

i tried redownloading the plubin, disabling/enabling, creating different discogs account, removing and requesting a new key from discogs, reinstalling musicbee but it doesnt work for me.

this is what it looks like when i click configure on the plugin http://puu.sh/buXvS.png
Title: Re: Discogs Tagger
Post by: Steven on September 11, 2014, 09:36:39 PM
I have to say its very flacky - i got results for the "american football" one time out of three. The reason it failed the 2 times was the query timed out so i would say its due to issues on the discogs side. I might increase the timeout perod from 15 to 30 seconds.
If you never get any results i suggest you also check you account on discogs to make sure that musicbee is still recorded as being enabled by your account.

edit:
this version (also updated in first post) has a 30 second timeout:

Title: Re: Discogs Tagger
Post by: Steven on December 20, 2014, 11:05:32 AM
This plugin should be working again now. It seems the plugin was getting authorisation failures - i guess there must have been some change on the discogs side. I have also taken the opportunity to change the query used so it should be faster than before (still too slow in my view though) and should not suffer from the timeout issues as before.

The plugin link in the first post is updated or get if from here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/6nf9smeuiek9ncl/mb_Discogs.zip

I also recommend you get the latest v2.5 (not required) as i made a few changes in the presentation of results. Unzip and replace the existing files:

Hi I have another question, and possible request.  Is there anyway to use/enter a web address from an actual page on Discogs in the Discogs tagger, like I can in the discogs taggers in Mediamonkey or Foobar2000?  Sometimes when I use the Discogs autotagger in Musicbee i get only partial albums, or 1 cd or a multi cd album.  Being able to put in a webaddress for the Discogs site (after I had researched the Discogs website) would really help pinpoint those tags.  Thanks!
Title: Re: Discogs Tagger
Post by: e-motiv on February 08, 2015, 06:24:07 PM
For me it also doesn't work. 2.5.5516

It doesn't find back any albums by "Auto-tag by album", though there are many albums in discogs that correspond.

What I noticed is that if I fill in the exact album artist in "album artist" under "Album auto-tagger", namely the one that I found via Firefox on discogs (e.g. "Various" in stead of "Various Artists" or in stead of -empty-), it does find back the album!

So maybe, it's just a matter of not requesting the fields that are manually made empty (after they were filled in on dialog creation)?

If i not know the album name there are no matches. Than search for (album)artist+title would be helpful and then you can select the right release. You can see this in the screenshot. This is a search with no album name. On top you can select the correct release from 13 hits.

Also the genre tag is filled with the style tag if there is a style tag. Why this?
A contry filter can also been very helpful.

Hi Steven,

i maintain the "Discogs Tagger" Addon from MediaMonkey. It's written in VBScript. I also wrote the Discogs Tagger with AutoIT.
I just think about helping MusicBee with my Discogs Tagger.

The Discogs Tagger EXE-File must some how triggered by MusicBee. The Discogs Tagger would get the selected song-files via api.
What do you think about this idea?

Regards,
Sven

You have to enable it in preferences > plugins if you haven't done that, and then wait (or start auto-tag) when you will be requested to accept the API key on discogs website.

So.. If I want to tag my files with this album https://www.discogs.com/es/ABBA-ABBA/release/465186 why I can't put the code -> r465186 anywhere to tag exactly that album?
I can't find it inside MusicBee, It's impossible.
I don't understand why if I put ABBA - ABBA just show me 1 album, but if I put one song in the album it shows me a few more (but not the one I am interested). It doesn't show me one single album from 1975 (the original date) nor the correct record company of the album: Polar Music (original release), but that data exist:
https://www.discogs.com/es/search/?type=all&title=ABBA&artist=ABBA&label=Polar&track=&catno=&barcode=&anv=&format=&credit=&genre=&style=&country=&year=1975&submitter=&contributor=&advanced=1

How could I do that? How do I get to any of that albums in MusicBee?

Hi,
I've got the same prob here with some of my albums.

My guess would be that discogs is somehow differentiating between CD and Vinyl only releases.

Short test gives tags for this CD/LP
https://www.discogs.com/ABBA-Gold-Greatest-Hits/master/12249 (https://www.discogs.com/ABBA-Gold-Greatest-Hits/master/12249)

but not for this Vinyl only:

I have added Discogs plugin and put in my PIN, then went into preferences tags 2 and made sure it is there and moved its priority to 1 and saved. I then closed MB and restarted then tried auto tag album entered Jerry Reed in album artist and The Bird in album then click find and I get 5 results of which none are right. I do not get any from Discogs but when I go to Discogs site and search it there the information is there but is not from MB album auto-tagger. So it looks like it is not accessing Discogs plugin.

I tried today another album using Auto tag by album and Discogs found the album so the plugin is working. I tried the album mentioned in the first post and it still does not find it even though I can find it in Discogs site so why unsure. I am just starting in converting cassettes to digital so I have many months ahead so I hope auto tagging works for most else it will be a slow process.

This kind of works, but not for all, for exempel some multiple cd's, often its just the first cd it do tags on not the rest (even if its on discogs), and many vinyls that does not have cd-release dont work ether, like:

https://www.discogs.com/Porter-Wagoner-Blue-Moon-Of-Kentucky/release/5017532

Is it possible to fix this? Or maybe do when doing a search add so you can choose to search on the release number like "5017532" as above?

I recently started trying to store full release dates in my collection. I've discovered that you can put a full date in the year field and MusicBee splits it into the TDAT and TYER fields nicely. The only problem is I can't find a source for the dates. Discogs stores the date. Could you add an option to get the full date in mm/dd/yyyy instead of just the year? That'd be amazing.

Hi.

Really nice plug-in. Before discovering this plug-in, I would tag in MP3tag specifically for Discogs. I downloaded the latest version from the link above and it worked for a week or so. Now it does not seem to access discogs anymore.

Will this plugin automate the process of looking up the BPM on discogs and updating the song entries on my end so I can sort all my music by BPM? I've also always wanted to get the Tempo fields updated automatically from a third party database.

Thank you!

Does this plugin still work, or.. how do you use it? I'm using the plugin posted a few comments up and version 3.2.6902. Doing the auto-tag by album still only brings up Musicbrainz data, despite Discogs being the first in priority. In particular I'm going through classical music and doing it by hand is pretty slow, and Discogs has the information Musicbrainz doesn't.

I've likewise tried the latest version of the plugin and I'm not getting any results for a lot of releases, for instance I'll get results for https://www.discogs.com/release/13772684 but not for any of the following:

/12856224
/8624837
/12636873
/13778564

I can't really make heads or tails about which ones I'll manage to find results for. Unfortunately the other online sources are sorely lacking in release data for a lot of my library, so discogs is basically my only option. As an aside I have no issues finding results for the same releases when using the discogs plugin in something like foobar2000 or MediaMonkey.

Hmm, now that I tried it again that on that one in particular, it's now coming up. I did give the other ones a try though, and got no results. I did also attempt to shorten the album title in the search, omit number of tracks, and even remove the artist so it's only searching for the album name as well, and it doesn't seem to come up for the other 3, I can find additional examples if that would help.

try this version:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/1242g6q1vvddbvc/mb_Discogs.zip/file

it has removed the unneeded filter and also i noticed that discogs can be inconsistent in the data it returns on the very first query, so this also has some retry logic included
Title: Re: Discogs Tagger
Post by: evil_mani-mani on July 29, 2019, 07:39:20 PM
Awesome, thanks! I'm now getting results for most of the albums that weren't coming up previously. Only thing I've noticed is that when searching a compilation, auto filling 'Various Artists' (if that's what it's been pre-tagged with) returns no results from discogs, only changing to 'Various' will return results, so perhaps if I can suggest automatically rewriting/remapping Various Artists to Various when searching with discogs specifically? Clearly not a big deal at least now that I know about it, but it might trip some people up.

There were a couple exceptions out of the many I tried, I did run into a couple edge cases that didn't turn up results, or were inconsistent, namely:
/13836267 < no results
/13259931 < album title alone provides no results, it needs to include 'Bonobo' as Album artist to get a result, not sure if this is the expected behavior though; it doesn't seem to like anything entered for the album artist that isn't exact, for instance, with /12773493 searching "Shinra" for the album artist doesn't return results, only "James Shinra" will result in a hit.

Anyways, thanks again for your efforts so far; already working much better than it was :)

I am unable to get MusicBee to open a browser to Discogs in order to retrieve a PIN.  MusicBee will open a dialog box if I go to preferences,Plugins, discogs, configure but since a website is not launching I am unable to retrieve a PIN.
I have an account with Discogs and MP3tag works fine with them.  I am running 3.3.7165.  My OS is Windows 10.  I am not running a portable build.  I checked and I do not ave a Discogs file in Roaming.
If you are able to give me the URL of the link that should be opening I can copy/paste that into a browser in order to retrieve a PIN.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
EDIT: I decided to try some more troubleshooting tonight.  I changed my default browser from Chrome to Firefox.  After doing this when I pressed the Configure button the webpage popped up right away.

It seems like some releases want to use the the vinyl numbering (A1, A2, B1, etc) even for non-vinyl releases, is there a way to force it to standard numbering in all cases? Easy enough to change after, but it'd be nice to eliminate a step.

Hi, I installed the plugin. Then set my preference to Discogs for Tags(2). But, nothing happens on track level. My actions: right-click on a track --> Edit --> go to the Tags(2) tab --> Auto-tag now. Nothing ever shows up in Tags(2). What am I doing wrong? Background: All my files are FLAC. Would mostly like to read musician credits per track and then import in Roon. Is it possible to import musician credits (PERSONNEL tag works best for uploading to Roon) on track-level from discogs with this plugin? Thanks.

Hello,

I want to tag my mp3s with genre tags and tried for hours to get it to work, also looking at lots of forum posts here, but sadly can't get it to work.

What I'm doing: right click Auto-Tag by Track->Identify Track and Update Tags. The song is selected and I press proceed, the status says searching but nothing is changed. I installed the discogs Tagger plugin and tried this for various tracks. E.g. for this one: https://www.discogs.com/de/Autograf-Sleepless-In-NYC/release/11627257 where discogs should have a Genre, right?

Anybody has any idea what I could be doing wrong?

Thank you very much!

Good to know, thank you. I was using MusicBrainz to update the genre but the status always said "no changes". For some tracks I was able to fix this by disabling the option "retrieve artists genres only".  Maybe this is helpful to somebody.

That's strange.

Under Tags (2) I disabled both MusicBrainz and GraceNote as tag providers, leaving only Discogs.
Then when using Auto-Tag by Track, I will get the genre tag populated for single tracks.

After installing the plugin and restarting the program I get the message:

Unable to complete the Discogs authorisation: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.
You can try again using the Configure button in the plugin preferences

When I go to plugins the plugin is always disabled, after enabling it I can click configure but it does nothing and when I apply and save the changes then go back to the preferences again the plugin will be disabled again.

Hi, seems like the last few days the discogs tagger stopped working and/or stopped lifting genres properly. this behaviour is random on every search, meaning sometimes it does not find the title, even copying the same info as is on discogs, sometimes it does but doesnt lift the style genres as before, just the "electronic" generic one for example. thx!

Hi,

Installed the plugin correctly I believe, got the pin, no specific error and discogs is now available in the tags provider.

Nevertheless it doesn't seem to be able to retrieve anything. I've tried with only discogs as a tag provider and I can't manage to get any result in the Auto-Tag by album (either looking from a well tagged album or using the manual search)

Anyone has noted the same behavior?

Running MB 3.4.7611 and Discogs plugin 1.0.1

Many thanks,
Adrien.

I found that I had like 10 access tokens in my discogs account for musicbee which probably wasn't a good idea. Here's how I fixed it:

- Login to discogs and go to https://www.discogs.com/settings/applications
- Remove all the tokens
- Start > run and type %appdata% to go to the AppData folder
- Open the Musicbee folder and then delete the 'discogs.token' file
- Restart musicbee and you should see the dialog to enter the new pin and re-auth with a new pin

After running auto tagger, I can now see the results for discogs.
Another thing to make sure of is if discogs is selected as a provider under "Tags (2)" in the preferences:

Title: Need help in using the Album Auto-Tagger
Post by: EightyEight on March 17, 2021, 04:34:39 PM
Hi,

I installed the plugin that allows discogs.
I press the CTRL+SHIFT+T  and I start using diferent album name or artist but it can never found the album.
the current album title on each audio file is "Sancho Panza - Carnival"
on the discog website, I also search this album and it immediately found it:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Sancho-Panza-Carnival/release/69342

In the Album Auto-Tagger dialog box, I searched for:
Album artist: VA, Various Artist or null
Album: Sancho Panza, Sancho Panza - Carnival, Sancho, Panza, Carninal etc
and any combination of these terms or individually.

It never finds it.

Album Artist = "Sancho Panza" returns one album on musicbrain but it's the wrong one.
then if I search for Album Artist = "Sancho" (without the quotes), it founds nothing.
This is really weird, "Sancho" is part of "Sancho Panza" so it should find it.
I even tried Sancho% or 'Sancho%', but this plugin is not using SQL language.

I know the plugin works with discog as I found other albums where the result set come from discogs ("Maroon 5" for instance)

This is turning me crazy! I'd like to understand the mecanics of this search plugin.

Can someone help me?
Title: Re: Need help in using the Album Auto-Tagger
Post by: frankz on March 17, 2021, 04:43:18 PM
FWIW I've had horrible luck using the album tagger with discogs (like you said, it works for some but not for others and I don't know why).  As a result I do all of my auto-tagging in picard (or mp3tag if musicbrainz doesn't have the album and I need to get the data from discogs).

For what it's worth, Discogs uses "Various" for various artists albums and you weren't searching on that exact match for some strange reason although the page you linked to showed it right at the top, but even using the right album artist I couldn't find that album from discogs using MB.

The 100% reliable way would be to be able to enter the release ID as a search term, but that's not an available option.

Hopefully someone else can provide better MB advice than this, but I don't know that you're doing anything incorrectly per se.

I acknowledge that is the case. I will try to address this but there are some complications and it might not be straight-forward to fix.
It might be more practical just to implement including the disc # in the discogs search so only one specific disc is returned

Hi

Thanks for this plugin.

I managed to install it, however I can't activate it as it won't let me open the Discogs authorisation page:

May I ask any help to solve this?

Many thanks.
