Title: [Feature Request] Close to Notification Tray / Click Notification Tray Icon to..
Post by: Pseudo on July 11, 2013, 08:16:20 AM
I would love to see a couple options implemented in the general settings, this shouldn't be a terribly difficult task.

1. Option to Close to Notification Tray
- Nice to have the option to prevent accidental closure. It can always be closed with right click in tray.
2. Option under Single Click and Double Click Menus to Minimize to Notification Tray.
- This is so its possible to open the main window and re-minimize it to the notification tray without using the task bar.

Thanks! I've been playing around with MusicBee and really love the speed and efficiency w/ just the right amount of stock features. :)

I've been using MusicBee for a long time, and I still haven't gotten use to this One thing..... I constantly close the application by mistake, then have to re-open it, then minimize it the right way. Grrrr. I probably do it a few times a day when I am using it. Tough habit to break.

It's tough because a few other Audio or video programs I use just as often give me the option to set X to mimimize to systray.

If it's in there already, can someone tell me where to find it?

If not in there yet then I'd like to +1 on wishing for this option....

Thanks for an awesome player....

You can minimize it to the tray, that's on the top of the first tab in the preferences. Closing to the tray isn't closing, it's minimizing instead of closing. Personally, when I close an application I expect it to actually close, as do many users. Perhaps a "minimize to tray when closing" (or whatever wording other apps use) option could be on the Minimize To drop-down menu.

I understand what you're saying. "Most" apps you'd want to close when you click the "X".

But I have a few programs that continue to work as background tasks, and when I hit the "X" they minimize to the tray and NOT close. Monitoring programs like Anti-virus programs, Camera Recording programs, Downloaders, other music players, etc....

I love this program and seeing as I listen to music while I actually do other tasks, I thought it would be a great feature if this could "X"'d to the tray as well.

It's not a big deal. Yes, I can hit the minimize rather than the "X". In fact, after using this for over 10 years, I should know better by now.

And Yes, I can re-open it and have it set to start where it left off.

I just think it would be more convenient to "X" to the tray like I am use to for all my other programs I have running in the background.

Maybe I'm wrong, but would it really hurt to have the option? I can understand not having it if it's too hard to implement, and/or not really wanted or needed by many....

I wonder what others think....

Was just a Request, as this IS the wish list....

for "Close to notification area"

I already have MB set to auto-start with Windows and "minimise to Notification Tray" + "start minimised" options set.
This would complete the options  ;)

PS "Close Application" even already exists as a right-click option from the icon!

i think 'close window' (not application) wont close mb from icon menu if this wish is done, but Steven might add 'close mb' item to mb tray context menu.

i vote to have the close to tray option   :)

thanks

I Just had a ton of windows open and I closed it again by accident. Pisses me off...... >:(

It's REALLY frustrating when you work with as many windows as I do. I know it's ME, but it happens way too often. I'm just glad my anti-virus and VOIP don't close like that....

Wish Musicbee could do something, it's been a while since the request. Or explain why it's impossible...

Maybe a plug-in could do it?

not really what I'd call a critical issue
but would be great to have

particularly when coupled with the plugin "music bee remote" which allows control of music bee through phone

Ahoj - I'm the freshman.
I decided to switch to a new (more stable) musicplayer.

So literally the VERY FIRST feature I tried to figure out was the "minimize to tray on close" function.

Well I ended up here... and i have to say I'm quite a bit shocked to realize this feature hasn't been implemented for the past 7 years.
Though MusicBee is recommended and decsribed as nicely designed throughout the web... though it kills my well trained UX.

Yeah, if the dev could add a checkbox which swaps out the "X" function, that'd be nice. And definetly helps with the "Ah f**k man, sorry folks I accidentally closed the musicplayer ... AGAIN." - issue.

+1 Same here! Bad habits die hard. Besides MusicBee being the best player and one which the most features available, it is a tad bit cumbersome in some of them, I guess it results from the wide range of input.

Reurning to MusicBee after a while, This post reminds me of my earlier request for the same feature request here, way back in 2016: https://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?topic=17841.msg106942#msg106942.

So, +1 definitely ... please.

Win10 groove can't minimize to tray and found people recommending MusicBee saying that it can so I got it, the settings are a bit all over the place but don't really need to touch them once you set it up to the way you like it. Not having close to tray is a bit annoying tho with pretty much all the programs that you would often keep in the background (steam, discord, VPN, anti-virus, etc) have this function as default these days.

Put a shrink-to-compact button next to maximize would be nice too.

Out of a dozen tray apps (Syncthing, Calibre, VoIP, Torrent, every Games Store), MusicBee is the only one that doesn't close to tray, and most annoying since I open it often.
The lack of votes is a selection bias, not everyone will register on the forum to complain, or will find another app.

- It's basically a service with DLNA running in the background, a warning "Are you Sure? Yes/No" would be nice.
- Without looking, it's quicker/easier to hit the close button instead of aiming for minimize.
- It's expected, every music player has the option close to tray.
- It's impossible:

I made an AutoHotKey (https://www.autohotkey.com/) script for those you can't live without:

Code
#NoEnv
#SingleInstance Force

; Close to Minimize
Classes := "WindowsForms10.Window.8.app.0.2bf8098_r7_ad1" ;
Loop, parse, Classes, `,
    GroupAdd, GroupName, ahk_class %A_LoopField%

SetTimer CheckMouse, -100
return

CheckMouse:
    CoordMode, Mouse, Screen
    MouseGetPos, mX, mY, WindowUnderMouse
    WinGetPos, wX, wY, wW, wH, ahk_id %WindowUnderMouse%
        CloseButton := (mY > wY and mY < wY+35 and (mX > wX + (wW-50) and mX < wX+wW))
    SetTimer CheckMouse, -100
return

#If (CloseButton)

    ~LButton::
    ~RButton::
        MouseGetPos,,, WindowUnderMouse
        WinGetClass, Class, ahk_id %WindowUnderMouse%
        If Class in %Classes%
        {
            WinMinimize, ahk_id %WindowUnderMouse%
        }
    return

You are awesome! Thanks so much for this. I tried many solutions found around the internet but they all worked on apps that are not made using WinForms so didn't work for MB. I tried editing the class part but still didn't work. This works perfectly the way I expect it to :) Right now I have to complete my bachelor's degree but when I find some free time I'll definitely try to create a plugin which enables this functionaility. Maybe with options to choose where to minimize it to - taskbar or tray. Again thanks so much :P

Just recently switched to MusciBee and love it... apart from that one missing feature that is really driving me crazy: out of habit from few other music players, I always click on close X when I want to dismiss my music player window but keep on listening to my music... BUT, sadly, I always end up in deafening silence  :(

So, a big +1 for Close to Tray

+1 for the Idea

I concur with this completely and registered for this forum simply to register my vote in favor of the feature addition. I was looking for an app on Windows as I had used a Mac and iTunes for 10 years. MusicBee handles a big library well but this, seemingly simple and standard, feature is highly missed.

Honest question here.
(because I do respect the sentiment many MusicBee users seem to share on this matter)

Personally I like it when things are as unambiguous as they can be.
Close closes, Minimise minimises.
That works very well for me. If I click the wrong icon, that's on me.
And I really hate it when I am under the impression that I have closed an application by clicking 'close', and then I find out it's still alive.

So could it be this is more about some Pavlov habit for some users to click on the utter top-right icon to get a panel out of sight?
Maybe the wish should then be to have an option to switch the positions of Close and Minimise, so Minimise can be located at the far right?

It's a rather common behaviour in many newer programs now days, so having it as an option would be useful as a lot of people are already accustomed to it.

The way I see it and have used it is, for some programs you don't want to close them under any circumstances unless it's very intentional, like right-click on the tray icon + close is. You wish to have the program always at hand to bring up whenever and do something with it, so closing it completely is something out of the ordinery in this usecase. MB for a lot of people is one of those "always there" programs I imagine.

Another reason is, the action to Close can be then used as a "get out of the way" (move to tray) action instead, with the same principle of not closing completely still applying, while the action Minimize can then be a more visible way to keep the program at hand e.g. keep in the task bar / minimize to mini player. So you essentialy gain one more function this way.

Maybe the wish should then be to have an option to switch the positions of Close and Minimise, so Minimise can be located at the far right?

In some cases I've seen programs use an additional "minimize to tray" button in the window controls bar to achieve this.

But since the requested behaviour is an already pretty standarized way of achieving it, I don't think implementing it in other another way such as adding an extra button or switching the buttons around would be as sensible.

If this is implemented, I think using the words "close to tray" would be misleading. "Close" means close. Or exit. Better verbiage would be "minimize to tray."

I agree with hiccup I think closing a program should close a program and hate when I think I closed a program and it's sitting there running in my tray.  Close should mean close.

"Minimize to Tray" (along with a bunch of other minimize options) already exists in general preferences.

Great point!
So what's the request for? It appears that this is already implemented. Unless the OP (and the others) want MB to exit and then sit in the tray. In which case MB can be pinned to the taskbar and remain there whether opened or closed. So again, this request is not necessary as far as I can tell.

I registered just to agree with this and maybe elaborate for better understanding.

I have been using Musicbee since January 2021, and I love it, but this one feature (or lack thereof I guess) is so frustrating.

The missing feature is the ability to close to notification tray.

This means that minimizing the window will minimize it to the taskbar normally. If you are using the app, want to minimize it, but know you are going to come right back to it, its still right there in the taskbar next to all your other currently in use applications (bottom left).

What we all want is the ability to press the close button (X) and MusicBee will hide itself in the notification tray. This is nice to not clutter up the taskbar when many other things are open, but still keep the app running so I can listen to music while working on other things.

Currently, the feature to "Minimize to taskbar" exists, however this only affects usage of the minimize button, which means it is no longer possible to minimize MusicBee to the taskbar, so if I want to hide it, the only place it will go is to the tiny button in the bottom right, something I cannot quickly access with keyboard shortcuts (Windows Key + T > Tab > Arrow keys to select musicbee > Space to open it)

Also, even though the minimize to taskbar feature works, if we accidentally click the X, it exits the application, instead of minimizing it, pausing our music, and now we have to reopen it, play my music again.

Obviously we are all here to nitpick and be extreme about it. The feature is a very small addition, but I think it is a must-have for an application that runs in the background on my computer 24/7.

Applications that support this feature:
* Adobe Application Manager
* AutoHotKey
* Battle.Net
* Discord
* Epic Games Launcher
* EVGA Precision X
* Google Chrome (And all chromium based browsers)
* Logitech Options
* Microsoft Teams
* Microsoft Skype
* NVidia GeForce Experience
* OBS Studio
* Origin
* Rainmeter
* Rockstar Games Launcher
* Spotify
* Steam
* Tixati
* Ubisoft Connect
* Windows Bluetooth
* Windows Math Input Panel
* Zoom

Difficulty in understanding English/Russian kept some people from coming here to express the feature request,at least in Chinese forums.
(no Chinese language option and the Google translation is just much worse than you can imagine)
Some put up with it and unwilling to register.
Some are used to it.
Others came here to give the suggestion.
I guess that's why there are so few people for +1 in this post.

And +1 pls.
Since Steven has limited time,if this "optional function" is realized,I will greatly appreciate it,but if not ,I am also OK with that.

(I'd just known MB last night. I spent an hour reading the explanations and finishing the settings.I found the process a little annoying ,but later I just found MB is just as great to me as VSCode to a programmer ;D -------- Steven is my superhero lol !)

Honestly, I love that MB is now one of the "rare" programs now that actually close when I say FREAKING CLOSE. But "Close to Dock to tray" bas become quite the standard in many Windows application, so it wouldn't hurt to have that option.

I'm pretty sure some programs like uTorrent docks to the tray when you click 'Close' by default, but you can change an option to force it to actually close legacy style.

so I guess

+1
