Title: Are posts being deleted here?
Post by: hiccup on August 21, 2019, 11:14:01 AM
Is a 'hidden' moderator/administrator deleting posts here?
On purpose, or some mistake perhaps?

I'm referring to a bug/question from Wisperbird and my reply.

Or is there maybe some forum bug going on?

Not that I'm aware of, and we generally copy each other on any serious messages or actions we're making. I might merge a post that was closely related to another, but it would have to be pretty vile for me to consider deletion. Is it possible the op removed it?

Is it possible the op removed it?

He might respond to that if he reads this.
But he can't have removed my reply.

Not a biggy, nothing important was lost (afaiac), but it is still weird.

edit,
Or is an OP able to remove his own thread including replies?

I agree with what psycho said. We don't remove posts unless they're spam or full of obscenities. In the case of the latter, the OP would receive a PM with a warning about a possible ban.

As for an OP being able to delete an entire thread - that's a good question which I think only Steven might be able to answer.

I do know that a mod can delete an entire thread because I did that by accident. I meant to -move- the topic but by accident hit -remove- the topic. And whoosh!! It was gone. I contacted Steven and the OP and it was determined that it what was lost was not a big deal. But it was to me and I now look two or three times before I hit 'move' or 'remove'.

None of the above.
Forum member Wisperbird asked a question, I answered him.

Perhaps he was satisfied with the answer and for some reason decided then to remove his question, and the forum has some timer that enables you to remove your own thread completely within a certain short period after the first post?

yes they can, although its poor form if someone has already answered

Then the OP probably was satisfied with the answer, and then either was a little bit embarassed because he didn't see the solution himself, and/or because he had asked a question and posted it in 'Bugs' instead of in 'Questions'.
Anyway, same as many fresh members, he must have overlooked the Bugs board subtitle: 'Report verifiable bugs and malfunctions here.'   ;-)

Mystery solved.

@mods/admins, (on my account) feel free to completely erase or move this thread if so desired.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I was citing an example of when we -would- do such a thing.

That seems more likely. Especially in light of what Steven posted about the topic.

Manual deletion by the OP was confirmed.

Thank you.

I see no need to delete this thread as it might be helpful to someone else.

Yeah. It surely is off-topic here, but at least we have learned that a member is able to delete other's posts in this manner.
I never knew that.

Ahhh --- I didn't notice this was in 'bug reports' so I'll move it to 'general discussions'

epilogue:

It looks like the close timing of replying and deleting was the culprit.
The OP had found the answer himself, had not refreshed the page, did not see my reply, and deleted his own post.
That explains what has happened. There was no deliberate deleting of a thread.

Good to hear. Thanks for the feedback.

It's interesting to note that the first post in this thread was copied and pasted into a new thread that contained a hidden spam link.

Over the past week or two there have been one or two "hidden spam link" posts that I have removed. The process at this point is that we ban the user and change the subject and text of the post to "Spam Removed / User Banned" (since the first post in a thread can only be deleted by Steven.) That way the spam is removed, as is the user. Then Steven comes along and deletes the first post. This method was put in place to prevent an entire thread from being removed by accident.
